Anyone who had seen the Final Hours Of MGS4 documentary knows that "development issues" can mean anything.

Kojima was bughunting way late into the development cycle, similar to what he is doing now.

Yeah, and the funny thing is that they probably have a huge Q&A team as well (like most development studio´s). He is just such a perfectionist that he checks everything by himself as well.

Finished watching the MGS4 documentary. Really fascinating stuff. Kojima really goes hands on with his games.

Also I noticed this which is very sad.

Metal Gear is a series of stealth action games, created by Konami in 1987. Depending on the game, you normally play as either Naked Snake (Big Boss) or Solid Snake, the two main protagonists, whose mission is usually to infiltrate an enemy base to eliminate a nuclear threat. This is in broad strokes, since trying to get into more detail would be useless as the plot is admittedly a bit convoluted at times, but there's a lot more to the story than that.

Metal Gear is also known for mixing reality with supernatural stuff, so you may have heard things about these games like guys who shoot bees from his mouth, immortal vampires, giant nuclear robots singing, etc. Despite all the craziness, the games also tackle serious topics like nuclear deterrence, torture, child soldiers and so on. If you're new to the series and decide to give it a chance, you'll be rewarded not only with excellent gameplay but also with one of the most compelling storylines in the medium.

The picture below shows the two main story arcs in the series, along with each game's theme and the year in which the story takes place.

METAL GEAR

  • Release date: July 1987
  • Available on MSX2 (Original version), PS2/PS3/360/Vita (Included in Metal Gear Solid 3 Subsistence/HD)
"This is Big Boss... Operation Intrude N313. Penetrate the enemy's Outer Heaven and destroy the ultimate weapon, Metal Gear!”

The game that started it all, starring a young Solid Snake. It is not essential to the overarching plot of the series, but if you want to play it it's included in the Subsistence and HD versions of MGS3.

METAL GEAR 2: SOLID SNAKE

  • Release date: July 1990
  • Available on MSX2 (Original version), PS2/PS3/360/Vita (Included in Metal Gear Solid 3 Subsistence/HD)
"Snake... Right on time, as always. Let's get started... Commencing Operation Intrude F014. Let's go over this one more time. Your mission is to infiltrate Zanzibar Land and rescue the kidnapped Czech biologist, Dr. Kio Marv."

Considered one of the best 8-bit games ever made, the sequel to Metal Gear significantly improved the stealth-based gameplay of its predecessor, and introduced a more complex storyline dealing with themes such as the nature of warfare and nuclear proliferation.

METAL GEAR SOLID
  • Release date: September 1998 (JP), October 1998 (NA), February 1999 (EU)
  • Available on PlayStation (Original version), PC, PS3/Vita (PS Classic), GameCube (The Twin Snakes)
- "Snake, listen up. It all went down five hours ago. Heavily armed soldiers occupied Shadow Moses Island, a remote island off the coast of Alaska."
- "What soldiers?"
- "Next-Generation Special Forces led by members of unit FOX-HOUND. They've presented Washington with a single demand, and they say that if it isn't met, they'll launch a nuclear weapon."

The first 3D game in the series, which made it explode in popularity. The cinematic style and storytelling were quite innovative at that time and would influence later games in the medium. In 2004, a remake was released for Nintendo GameCube (MGS: The Twin Snakes).

METAL GEAR SOLID 2: SONS OF LIBERTY

  • Release date: November 2001 (NA/JP), March 2002 (EU)
  • Available on PS2 (Original version), PC, PS3/360 (HD version)
- "Try to avoid confrontations. Our goal is to collect evidence on Metal Gear development and expose it to the world. It would be best if you could get out of there without alerting anyone."
- "Don't worry. I know the drill -- we're not terrorists."
- "Very good. Don't you forget that you're a part of "Philanthropy" now, an anti-Metal Gear organization and officially recognized by the UN."

The jump from MGS to MGS2 was one of the biggest in the whole series, both gameplay and graphics wise. Considered by many a postmodern masterpiece, MGS2 was a game ahead of its time; its themes and social commentary are much more relevant now than when it was released.

METAL GEAR SOLID 3: SNAKE EATER

  • Release date: November 2004 (NA), December 2004 (JP), March 2005 (EU)
  • Available on PS2 (Original version), PS3/360 (HD version), 3DS (Metal Gear Solid: Snake Eater 3D)
"Listen up, Jack. Your mission is to infiltrate Tselinoyarsk in the Soviet mountains, ensure the safety of Sokolov, and bring him back to the West. If we don't get Sokolov back before that weapon is complete, we'll be facing a major crisis. The clock is ticking."

The game where we get to see the origins of the legendary soldier known as Big Boss. Snake Eater introduced several new gameplay features, such as the survival and camouflage mechanics. The Subsistence version also added a user-controlled 3D camera and Metal Gear Online, the first iteration of the online modes in the series.

METAL GEAR SOLID: PORTABLE OPS
  • Release date: December 2006 (NA/JP), May 2007 (EU)
  • Available on PSP
In 1970, the FOX unit has broken their allegiance with the CIA and gone renegade. Snake himself is also targeted by this unit, which sent renegade soldiers to attack and capture him. Snake is tortured and interrogated in order to locate the whereabouts of the missing half of the Philosophers' Legacy.

The first canonical game in the series for a portable platform. It introduced the Comrade System, which allows Snake to recruit allies and send them into battle or have them provide intel, for example. Portable Ops also featured a Wi-Fi-enabled multiplayer mode.

METAL GEAR SOLID 4: GUNS OF THE PATRIOTS
  • Release date: June 2008
  • Available on PS3
"War has changed. It's no longer about nations, ideologies or ethnicity. It's an endless series of proxy battles, fought by mercenaries and machines. War, and its consumption of life, has become a well-oiled machine."

Probably the most divisive game in the whole series, with many of the fans loving it while as many others find it disappointing. For what it's worth, MGS4 was GAF's Game of the Year 2008 (not only once but twice when there was a revote in 2012 and it ended up winning again). In any case, the game is an experience like no other, so you should play it and judge for yourself.

METAL GEAR SOLID: PEACE WALKER
  • Release date: April 2010 (JP), June 2010 (NA/EU)
  • Available on PSP (Original version), PS3/360 (HD version)
In 1974, an unknown army of well-equipped soldiers has taken over Costa Rica. The soldiers have also brought along a nuclear warhead labeled "Peace Walker", to set off their last nuclear warhead for deterrence, and demonstrate their power with the perfect deterrent. Big Boss is asked to save the country along with his Militaires Sans Frontières (Soldiers Without Borders).

Initially this game was going to be named Metal Gear Solid 5. Not without reason, since Peace Walker has the biggest amount of content in a Metal Gear game to date, with more than a hundred missions between main and side ops, co-op mode, lots of audio tapes that flesh out the story, etc.

METAL GEAR RISING: REVENGEANCE

  • Release date: February 2013 (Consoles), January 2014 (PC)
  • Available on PS3/360/PC
Raiden is protecting a VIP in a developing country, when they are attacked by a cyborg organization led by the cyborg Samuel Rodrigues, leaving Raiden completely defeated. Raiden is then reconstructed by his PMC, and his search for Sam and the company he's working for, Desperado Enforcement LLC., drives him into a quest for revengeance.

Platinum Games doing what they do best. A fast-paced action game starring Raiden, over the top in the best possible way, with an excellent soundtrack and memorable bosses. Canon or non-canon, you can't miss this if you're a fan of action games.

METAL GEAR SOLID V: GROUND ZEROES

  • Release date: March 2014 (Consoles), December 2014 (PC)
  • Available on PS3/PS4/360/X1/PC
- "So who’s the other target?"
- "That would be Chico. He’s being held in the same area as Paz. Last radio contact was forty hours ago. Find them both. Bring ‘em back alive. Enter the compound from the south cliff. Secure Chico and Paz, then report back from the rendezvous point."

The prologue to Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain. It consists of a main mission (Ground Zeroes), four side ops with different objectives and two non-canonical extra ops. Despite its short length, it is possibly the best Metal Gear yet in terms of gameplay and it has tons of replayability, so give it a try while you wait for The Phantom Pain!

THE BEST IS YET TO COME...

Snake's Revenge is a stealth action game developed for the Nintendo Entertainment System, and a direct sequel to the NES version of the original Metal Gear. Released in North America in April 1990 and in Europe in March 1992, it was made without the involvement of creator Hideo Kojima and it's not part of the series' canon.

eeVZrfv.png

Ghost Babel is a non-canon game, released for the Game Boy Color in 2000, that serves as an alternate sequel to the events of the original Metal Gear. The game is set seven years after the events of Operation Intrude N313.

icT5bvE.png

The AC!D games were released for PSP in 2005 and 2006 respectively, and developed as a separate franchise from the main Metal Gear series. The games use a trading card-based system to control the main character's movements and actions.

Game Designer: 70% of my body is made of movies. - Hideo Kojima

Director of Kojima Productions, former Vice President of Konami Digital Entertainment and the man responsible for the Metal Gear series. None other game developer has gone to such great lengths to play his fans like a damn fiddle: the infamous MGS2 bait and switch, creating fake game studios to announce new games just because, etc. This reputation has led some fans to believe that there is a ruse behind everything he does and says, resulting in insane fan theories and legendary threads like TeamCG vs TeamReal or the head transplant Doctor.

Also, as you can see in the picture, a few months ago we succeeded in delivering a poster with MGS-GAF avatars to Kojima. He even hanged it up in the Kojima Productions office, so we couldn't be more proud!
