Metal Gear Solid V The Phantom Pain to feature microtransactions

Let's all overreact as usual before we know all the specifics... It was like yesterday that people were jumping on mortal kombat before we knew the whole story. Just like that and assassin's Creed I'm sure it will be just as easy to ignore it.

MOTHER FUCKER
BASE

Seriously though, all these save on time micro-transactions don't really effect the actual game. It didn't in Black Flag for example and if ANYONE is going to bone the consumers it is Ubisoft. When Metal Gear has specific cardboard boxes that can only be opened with a companion app....then we will have a problem.

Dammit. Dammit dammit dammit. Whatever, as long as I can build mother base without being forced to buy reduced times by annoying progress walls, I'll live.

Of course it will affect the game design for those wondering. They're going to make unpaid players wait for hours for their MB items to upgrade but you can bypass all of that if you give them more money. It's Konami what did you expect.

Yeah, wouldn't surprise me if they artificially lengthen item development time.

Listening to Greg Miller about it on youtube. He didn't say anything took overly long to develop. His MB even got a zoo because he fultoned so many animals back to it.

You had to wait in Peace Walker and there weren't any micro-transactions. Waiting is totally a callback to previous games. lol

While I think it's highly likely, I do think it's jumping to conclusions.

MGSV TPP features MGO which we know has stuff like hats, skins, which are 99% assuredly going to be micro-transacted.

But will the GMP-related 'research' features of TPP will? That's still unknown. (but super likely)

Couldn't the game just need a internet connection to interface with the mother base companion app?

Edit: also none of the previews have complained about the time it takes to build anything, so unless they've tweaked the timers just for the preview event maybe it's not game breaking.

But if it's real, imagine someone buying gmp, tricking out their forward operating base and getting all the shit they paid for stolen by an invader lol

Cue donation drives for speed run attempts.

edit: the Mother Base online thing might be tied in to time limited advancement like the Ground Zeroes Mother Base app I've been fiddling with recently (does this even do anything worthwhile in GZ or am I wasting time lol)

It sounds like the microtransactions will just speed up R&D and Outer Ops completion times.

I'm fine with this, just as long as Konami hasn't forced Kojipro to massively extend the regular completion times to absurd levels (or worse, Kojipro did this of their own accord).

Its been a while since I beat PW but iirc, it took anywhere from 1-3 missions for R&D to complete, and typically 1 or 2 missions for Outer Ops to wrap up. If someone wants their Silenced Tranquilizer Mosin Nagant RIGHT NOW, sure, they can pay for that. Not sure why anyone would care how long their Outer Ops take... unless you get extra rewards or POWs for finishing it faster...

Just as long as the regular timers aren't absurdly long, and MGO doesn't become a P2W shit-fest, I'm good with this :D

Any interest I had in Metal Gear Solid V has now flatlined.

Rising 2 is the franchise's only hope to entice me, at this point.

You shouldn't be fine with this. Monetising gameplay in this manner ultimately corrupts game design. Even if it doesn't happen now it will happen inevitably. Stand against it before it's too late.

Welp, time to get outraged without all the details.

Welp, time to act all naive and as though this shit is something new, and that we should totally give 'em a chance this time you guys.

Not a huge amount of time in PW, and it could be sped up IIRC without having to pay real money.

It seems at least some of the micro transactions revolve around the Mother Base mechanic. Hopefully, it's limited to that and not real game breaking P2W stuff.

Unless they increase development time on Mother Base, I can't see a reason to get too upset, since wait time wasn't too bad in Peace Walker.

Then again, this is Konami.

This strikes me as rather extreme, so I hope you reconsider. It just seems... a bit much, but if it makes you feel this way it makes you feel this way.

I think it's important that we remember that most of the journalists -- including Greg Miller who gave two hours of his time for his event -- never encountered anything in 10-15 hours of playing that ever struck a chord of "yikes, this is here for microtransactions."

Here is to hoping it is limited to cosmetic items in MGO and doesn't impact or otherwise influence the main story online elements with Mother Base.

I still don't quite understand the issue with MTs in games. You don't have to use them. They were in Ryse and were completely unobtrusive. You have the option to use them and boost/speed up your progress or ignore them. I personally used them. Like $10 worth but I got Ryse pretty cheap.

If they don't impede the game in any real way, what's the problem?
