Man I sure hope the Persona team switches game engine for the next one. Metaphor's cool as fuck but it shouldn't need neither a Pro nor a good PC to run at 60fps. :goog_relieved:
Persona 3 Reload runs on Unreal Engine 4, so I'm thinking that's where the team is headed. P3R looks and performs great. I thought it looked better in-game than Metaphor's cutscenes (not the "hand" animated ones but the ones where it's still CG but has more detail than the gameplay does).

Best accessories in that game. I'm immortal now on hard. :D

Why the fuck yall out here spoiling party member names????????? Whats wrong with yall
Lack of empathy, people just don't care anymore.

You should just avoid this thread until you complete the game. It's what I had to do. My experience is that the character reveals are awesome in the game if you don't know beforehand.

Finally finished the game. Clocked in at 96 hours. Gonna start my Regicide playthrough for the NG+ boss.

I got a question. Does anyone know who the VA for More is? He sounds strangely familiar to me especially when he sounds emotional. I used the English VA.

it's hilarious how on the nose this game is. There was also this previous bit about how afwul people were for hating on a kid simply because it's mix raced... it's not even much of a spoiler, it doesn't really fit into the story anyway.

E: also, I love the second town. I didn't even think there'd be a second one. I miss exploring towns in jrpgs so much, these feel really fleshed out.

Decide to jump back in with NG+. Want to face off with the big boss.

Well the game was perfectly named. There are a ton of metaphors here. The primary theme is diversity but not in a overtly political way. It highlights differences of tribes more than anything else. I think of it more like a caste system. I like tales like this that have a message but are very thoughtful in how that message is conveyed.

I took a long break from it. They got so chatty and everything I do passes time. Maybe I’ll go back to it. It would be cool to fight the end boss, but that’s in like 60 or so hours. lol I’m only at level 20 with my party.

Sigh. Thanks to life, I was really, really late getting into this, and have had lots of interruptions. Very frustrating.
I think about it often, but keep getting Metaphor blocked.
Starting to wrap up things in Martira so I think I'm about a third of the way through the game.
I'll hopefully get more time with it this weekend.

In the late game, where's a good location to go grind out some exp to level up jobs? I'm finding this last block of days sorta anxiety inducing because I'm not sure what I should be doing hah. I have most every companion at max relationship minus a couple, but I feel like I'd be better off getting more powerful instead of taking some days to get them maxed.

Exactly the same feeling.

Once you open the Dragon trials the game decides to make your farming progress much worse, unless you are already +67 level, which is so fucking stupid. It's such a shore, because in order to farm faster it's ideal to already be overleveled for the towers, and well, most likely you won't be.

One of the best farming spots is at the Dragon temple, but you get locked out of it in late game, god only knows why.

I did all the sidequests, farmed for a bit, and I'm only currently sitting at level 64, and the Dragon Trials bosses are level 70-75.

I did some trial and error, and found out that the best farming tower of the three is the one that has the whole corridor full of skeleton warriors (I think it's neither Forsaken or Insolence, it's the other one).

There are also a couple of red dogs there that net you +2000 exp on a single battle, which is extremely fast if you use Devil Summoner Eupha, with heavy ice damage to all.

Eventually there is another spot in one of the other towers with red summoning trees, but every single enemy there is level +67. So yeah, you can't go there right away to.

I honestly just pushed through stuff and didn't grind until the very last dungeon. The most grind I did was on the very last dungeon with the respawning melancholy thingy that spawns teeth. There's this randomly spawning big version of it that is level 80+ which was quite easy to kill either by using almighty or by making them vulnerable to some elements. Even better if you get one of your party member trigger the stun skill at the beginning of battle. Mortal something is the name which reduces their hp even more.

Good stuff is that there is also a shop in that dungeon that sells mana potions. You can perpetually farm there as much as you like. They even drop reflect phys and reflect mag accessories.

Took them a while to realize this game has a MP issue in dungeons :messenger_tears_of_joy:

That's by design man. Managing your MP is a mechanic in most dungeon crawlers and JRPGs and even more so in this one with the calendar mechanic, since that pushes you to play in an optimal way trying to get as far as possible without running out of MP.

True but there are workarounds. It's just too damn tedious to do. Mage class has a passive that recovers mp every time you hit something in the overworld. I just can't be bothered honestly lol. I just used Pugilist or Brawler in the early game. No mana issues if you don't use mana lol.

Finally finished this game up last night. I have a lot of thoughts but I'm too lazy to type it all up so I'll just keep it short and sweet:

8.5 out of 10

Overall great story and characters (Heismay is the best) but a bit too lenient on difficulty IMO.

Finished the game the other day. I would say it is about a 7/10 for me. It's not bad, but feels pretty lacking compared to the Persona series.

A lot of the party members don't really feel like they have much of a reason to be joining your party when they do, and some of them join pretty late, so there isn't as much chemistry as there is in a Persona game. The overall story and writing is a bit weak.

Many of the game mechanics feel lifted from Persona (obviously), but don't have as much meaning here. For example the calendar system makes more sense and has more to it in a Persona game. The game takes place over 1 school year, there are events and such that line up across the year. There are school days, summer break, club activities/jobs on certain days etc. Managing your time is a gameplay element where you have to make choices in how you spend your time, whereas in Metaphor it's kind of arbitrary and the only real purpose is to give you time limits for completing dungeons.

It just feels like there is less stuff to do in general. The last 10 days at the end of the game, I had all the social links maxed, stats maxed, etc and nothing to do. And the game wouldn't let me go to the final dungeon yet, so I am basically just sitting there sleeping through the time periods. And a lot of the game felt like that.

There were also some weird game design choices that were kind of annoying. Individually they aren't big issues, but they kind of add up. For example, when changing archetypes you are forced to change your equipment. ie if you have boots on with 100 defence but some added bonus you want, it will always equip your character with the boots that are 110 defence but no bonus, so you are constantly re-equipping. Or how some battles require a certain character to be in the party, so before you start the battle it removes the characters in your party except for the required ones, even if you already had the required ones in your party. Or how the only way to cook is when you are travelling on the ship. Etc.

The music is pretty good though.

I like the game very much but 100% agree with what you are saying. It feels more like a (very good) first draft that a final coherent, well thought out artwork imho

cut

I'm at 30h, on the island of virga. I'm not saying I expected more because I had more or less intuited that it would be this but at least on the combat side and mechanics related to it.
frankly it all seems not very useful, the archetypes are repeated and there are too many with little utility and that push little to change strategies. this is a limit of their formula even in persona for me, the system based on weaknesses speeds up everything making such a long game less boring but it also flattens it tremendously imo

for now I find myself in line with your assessment and on the plot side I also find it much weaker than p5, even though I'm much more attracted to this setting. the only point in favor compared to persona is that at least there is a world to visit and you don't remain confined to a single city, it helps to break up the monotony more.

On the last month for my NG+ playthrough. Two trophies left to get Platinum. I've never done a NG+ playthrough because most games just don't grab me, but this time I'm really enjoying playing it again. I'm skipping all the story stuff and just focusing on building up my character for the big boss at the end.

Pretty much all my doubts about Metaphor being my GOTY are gone.

I’m sure they will have like a “Royal” edition. That’s when I’ll pick it up. It may address all of those issues

Based, glad you enjoyed it so much man.

I consider it my GOTY. Haven't played all the games released this year but if there's something better than Metaphor then that would be a pleasant surprise.

Definitely mine. Loved every bit of it.

For me it between Unicorn Overlord and Metaphor as GOTY.

I've got Unicorn Overlord queued up next.

Should give that one another chance. I've been on a JRPG streak so it might be soon.
For me its most addicting game I ever played.

I spend unhealthy hours just building my squad and then testing out at coliseum and then see your creation play out in Vanillaware‘s beautiful animation…..nothing is more satisfying.

How did you guys beat the Fire Dragon?

I've search the web, use the tips I found but this boss is so badly design I can't seem to counter it at all.

I did all the side counted and have 0 charm protection accessories. Z-E-R-O.

I setup my turns perfectly, and the mf Dragon always, but always charms my party which eventually wipes my party out.

I'm using the repel magic attack with fire weakness on the dragon, in order to counter his wipe out attack but it never works.

He charms my party and everything goes to shit.

I'm this close of rushing into the final boss and be done with this game.

Really really tired of it.

EDIT: Finally beat it, with the exact same strategy I've been trying to pull.

The RNG is this fight is pure dogshit.

First, what level are you?

I cooked a bunch of Sublime Spoonfuls which adds four stars to your turn. I went heavy on light attacks with Prince and Eupra. Debuffed dragon on light and buffed up attacks. Use sublime spoonfuls to keep the dragon from having a turn. He did get one turn in, but on the very next turn, I finished him off.

Using attack with light strategy was based mainly on this video:

Edit: oh....I see you beat it. Cool

You know what I just realized about Metaphor getting nominated for GOTY? We get to hear a live orchestra and perhaps even a rapping monk during the TGAs...

Putting more time into this now, hate that it released during football season lol. Its great but I got a pet peeve that just irks me even though it is minor. Unless I'm blind, when you are picking an archetype, it doesn't tell you on that screen if they did strike, slash or pierce physical damage. You have to go out out to your equipment and see the weapons you can equip.

Kind of hoping I'm wrong and just missing it, but if I'm not and that's the design, wtf would they ever design the game that way? It just makes it so annoying to want to experiment with different classes.

Also, even though it's great the pacing is a little screwed up. I don't mind slow talking sections in this type of game but there are times where I feel like I got legit 2+ hours with next to no gameplay. Specifically, I just finished the 3rd dungeon. And the amount of time between the end of that and to the 4th area is astonishing.

All this Unicorn Overlord talk got me to buy it just now. It's $30 on PS5 with Amazon's Black Friday sale.
