Aaaaaaand finally - here's the full gameplay piece that ties all these snippets together. Lots of new footage, and a first look at one of our new mutants...

These gameplay demo's are suddenly all the rage aren't they?

If only we'd known, we'd have commissioned a glossy CGI trailer, just to be different. Or saved some cash and recreated it as a traditional Russian puppet theatre.

But we didn't. So here's Part I of our E3 Gameplay Demo:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SKsB4hECFMQ

Here's Part II:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xGFMJz5Moj0&feature=channel_video_title

And here's Part III:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=X2n2G0rtQPs&feature=channel_video_title

Our glorious marketing department have also put the 'Prologue' which sets the scene up our facebook page - http://www.facebook.com/MetroVideoGame - although you need to 'Like' it to watch. I expect we'll release it separately later.

Happy to answer any questions about what you see!

EDIT: Full Gameplay demo added

My favourite parts were the ones where you were alone outside exploring without much gun fighting taking place save for the occasional mutant. The tension and atmosphere was what I enjoyed the most.

I guess such sections are not shown off because they don't demo very well, but I trust they are still there in the sequel. I would love for larger areas to explore on the surface than there were in the original, how are things evolving on that front?

No no, the best parts were the fights against human opponents. The mutant fights were horrible.

More exploration, more human opponents.

Looks like the shooting mechanics have been enhanced since its predecessor had problems in that aspect. Looks like a good 30 dollar buy.

Yeah, the mutant fights had a lot of problems. They tended to move in on you fast and disappear from your view then they'd start to run circles around you while gnawing on your shins making them very hard to keep up with and shoot, especially in total darkness. It didn't help that they would always attack in packs, very disorienting.

Still, personally I just don't like fighting against humans in games, they consistently make for the most boring enemies, battling them with guns feels similar in each game, at least the mutants were a change of pace.

But yeah, more exploration would definitely be appreciated.

This is exactly how I feel. I'm currently playing through 2033 and the mutants are way too spongey. Librarians take around 14 close range shotgun shots and 2 sticky dynamites even on easy. I end up just running through, which would almost make sense to run from them, but it feels like I'm just exploiting their AI more than anything. But everything else has been great or easily overlooked. I usually hate fps games, so it says something about this game for me to enjoy it like I do.

It looked like stealth kills with the knife have been added (might be wrong since it was dark on my phone) which would be a nice addition. Can't get enough stealth personally so the more the better ;).

Yeah I agree with this. Fighting humans is just kind of a means to an end. The mutant stuff could have been explored more, but I definitely found that part of the game far more interesting. Hope they explore more of that in this. Also more varied locations would be nice. I get that the name of the game is METRO but there's a good chunk of 2033 that just blended together for me. Maybe it was just the human combat, in addition to the very familiar tunnels. Stuff like the Library, and the Tower were awesome though.

Video looks nice though. I like how they don't all just automatically know where you are initially. 2033 had humans that must have had super vision.

Looking pretty good. Awesome that I get a chance to play this one, never got a chance to play the first Metro since as far as consoles it was on 360 only.

Looks marvelous.

Like many have said before, the human fights were better than the mutant battles imo. I found myself feeling more frustrated when fighting a few mutants at a time, as it didn't take much for the main character to die.

And once gain, like mentioned previously, the exploration and overall feel of the game is very important.

A question, will the
alien/supernatural side to the story still be present, as I quite enjoyed the mysterious nature of it.

So no one else thinks this game looks dumbed down? I never had the chance to waste bullets by shooting out lights in 2033, could never take on more than two enemies at once and survive, and don't really understand how people think the guns handle better (I thought they handled find in 2033)?

@ScionOfTheRisingSun

E3 is a tough place to show a game like Metro - there's an expectation of Action! Spectacle! - and usually not much more than 10 minutes to show it in (our total demo actually ran to 15 minutes).

So we decided to put out something that really showed off how we've addressed a lot of the criticism over our core systems - specifically, the shooting part :)

But hopefully you can trust us when we say we're not altering the fundamental Metro experience of loneliness, desolation, survival horror, exploration, mystery... You'll be back on the surface, frightened and alone, your mask fogging up, your breath ragged, your torchlight flickering, three rounds left in your pistol, howls of mutants on the wind and no escape ahead but a dark opening flanked by a frozen corpse and a sheet of iced blood.

@PatMcAtee

We're not dumbing it down. But I think it's fair to say this demo was not filmed in Ranger mode...

@-Red_Mage-

We've re-done our animation system (for both human and mutant) to allow for more realistic reaction to bullet impact / other physics. You can definitely tell when you're hitting the target...

You didn't actually see a stealth kill in this clip, but presciently, you correctly deduced their addition. :) We currently have melee mapped to single button, rather than having to swap to the knife first, although we're still experimenting with the control scheme

Thanks for the clarification! Game looks great so far.

Metro was a flawed game but I played 20 hours of it. And I'll play more.

The first part of this video looks to be a very frutrasting one when you actually play it, lol. Well, at least judging from the first game.

edit: 28 hours...

You're basing this on 2 and half minutes of footage?

And Bi50N, any answer for my question?

Thanks.

I liked the way the guy's voice echoed near the end.
That, and the room lighting up when the guns' fired were my favorite things about the video. Very atmospheric, as expected.

Excited for this. Playing through the PC version (beat 360 version), and the game is pretty fantastic. I love the atmosphere and feeling you get when you play the game; constantly having to conserve ammo, be stealthy, etc..

P.S. Running Metro in 1080p in DX 11 on High is pretty spectacular.

Nice, I assume the gun uses pressure (no muzzle flash = ' where is he?!'). Do you pump those up in the similar fashion as the ball bearing gun? Or are we picking up compressed canisters?

(PPS. I hope we have some more encounters with survivors plucking away at guitars! Really love how it adds to the atmosphere)

Loved the Metro 2033, warts and all. Can't wait to play this one.

@ Bi50N, can you share any info/details how you're improving the stealth mechanics? It felt a bit too trial and error sometimes in 2033 IMO, plus there were moments where I didn't think I should have been caught but the enemy just knew where I was. Almost like they were only acting like they were blind, but "coincidentally" always walked towards where I was hiding.

With the lack of AA I'm hoping that's 360 footage.

Could have something to do with them using deferred rendering. That doesn't really play well with typical MSAA IIRC. Also I believe they used a custom AA in 2033, maybe they are experimenting with some new implementations. (FXAA maybe?)

@The English Conquistador

I missed that. I am pre-conditioned not to uncover spoilers. Then realised...

But yes, that element is still very much there. It's kind of fundamental to our tone!

@KageMaru

We're well aware the AI didn't feel like it behaved consistently. This is a big, big topic for us, but not my expertise at all, so I would hold out for a detailed blog post on the matter and trust me in the meantime when I say - we're just making it better

Aha! Thanks for the reply Bi50N. Great to hear it's still a theme, it was nice to have such an interesting twist to the game itself.

You could use 4xMSAA but it destroyed performance. The lighting looks great here, but so did 2033's. Glad to see they're addressing the main complaints I had, though, which were the animations and AI.

I don't know if you will be able to answer this, probably not. Metro: Last Light was shown in the Wii U video reel.

Do you have any plans to bring it to the system?

If so have you begun development on it already?

Can you make any comments about how developing on the Wii U is, if you have begun development on it?

If you haven't begun development do you at least have DEV KITS, if so how early did you get them?

Looks awesome, Bi50N. I loved Metro 2033. Its emphasis on isolation and stealth encounters appealed to me MASSIVELY, which leads me to ask: has the stealth aspect been toned down at all? I sincerely hope not. Not enough FPS games employ stealth mechanics. As long as you amend the sporadic reactions of the AI and add some "oomph" to the gun-play, this game should be amazing.

Keep up the good work!

Looks awesome. My biggest concern with this game is this:
I loved Metro 2033 but it did seem like there were some parts that were either rushed or unfinished. The things that really make me fall in love with it were the atmosphere and the story. It looks like a major focus for Last Light will be cleaning up a lot of the technical issues, but can we expect to see the same sort of oppressive atmosphere and pacing that the first game had? And who is writing the story, since this game doesn't follow the sequel of the book the original was based on, Metro 2034?

Metro 2033 was my Game of the Year.

I expect no less this time around. It totally resonated with me.

Bi5on, did they ever confirm any Multi-Player modes? Co-Op modes? Not that it's a deal breaker.

Looks better than I expected it to be.

Is this PC exclusive or are us console plebeians getting some love too?

Wow.

Looks amazing, I didn't play the first but with those words from the dev above, sounds like the game will be one hell of a ride. I'm glad to see games like this that seem difficult, with a semblance of realism getting exposure.

Does most of the game take place underground like this or are there open areas to explore also?

Looks good, I agree with more human encounters and less mutant encounters, hated fighting mutants with a passion in the first one.
