Metroid Prime 4: Beyond, overview trailer (Switch 2)

The writing in Fusion was also widely considered to be bad, but it wasn't as big of an issue because it was still minimal. Historically, Metroid is not a series that has done well on that front, which is why many people are worried that it appears Prime 4 is doubling down on it.

Fair enough.

And, again, I see your point about it making sense for her to be traumatized and even to have some weird attachment issues early on. What doesn't make sense, IMO, is for someone who has already overcome so much and done so much to still be that awkward teen girl in an entry that, canonically, comes after Super Metroid.

Of all the overwrought and nonsensical characterization, for me, the worst part was having the return of Ridley, whom she had faced and defeated so many times before, cause her to literally and visually revert into a weeping child.

But, like you said, agree to disagree, and to each their own.

So then that begins a conversation about PTSD. Is anyone one ever completely over it? Do our current war veterans that have been treated for PTSD with drugs and psychiatric care ever relaspse? Doesn't even apply to just veterans, can be any traumatic event. My favorite character is Guts from Berserk. He is as brave as they come for a main character. He has PTSD from tons of traumatic events and literally right now in the comic he is relapsing from it, having suicidal thoughts, when everyone needs him to be the strong reliable Guts they know.

Did you see her interacting with other human beings in Fusion? Fusion was already pointing to her fixation with Adam. Not to mention she is younger in this cutscene and this team is likely the first and only humans she had close contact with after leaving the Chozo.
Yeah she was on a operating table when they were surgically removing parts of her Power Suit after X Parasite Infection when she went in with the BSL Research Team on SR388. So there was implied interaction there. Not to mention her limited interaction with Scientists in Super Metroid in it's intro or her saving endangered Wildlife on the planet and the bits and pieces with the Metroid Hatchling.

"Samus, remember to SHOOT that ENEMY with your GUN so that the enemy DIES and you LIVE and continue to be a FAMOUS BOUNTY HUNTER"
"Samus, there's a hidden passage three tiles down and to your left! Hey! Samus! Samus, this gate is locked with a password! Hey! The password is XKJ9-57! Hey! Samus! That gate is locked with a mysterious red icon. Samus! The missiles that you'll need to unlock that gate are four rooms to the northeast, but they'll be guarded by a boss! Samus! The boss will be weak to fire attacks on its underside! Remember, you can use fire attacks by pressing the X button!"

Truly, the essence of Metroid.

Feel free to share a video that the companion keeps following you after the tutorial area… He reach the destination an stay there.

I remember in one of the previews they said that got to a bit where they left him behind and they thought that's the end of that and then he started communicating with them over the radio AND later they reunited with him.

Nobody has said oh don't worry he's only with you for 10 minutes and that's the end of it. The previews keep complaining about his presence and the writing of his dialogue, and we know that they had a session of 1.5 hours with it.

Fairly certain I read somewhere that every major area has a new partner NPC associated with it, but I really hope that's wrong.

That's not a companion.

The rumors is that every NPC has a power upgrade for Samus not that they are going to be companions 🙄

Retro clearly wanted to go this route after Prime 3. Now it makes me wonder what the story would have been and how it would have played out like for the Namco Bandai Prime 4.

I remember reading that the development was a mess, Nintendo scrapping 3 years of development and start from zero is not common.

We do not know as yet how this is all implemented from such a small sample of the overall game.
Usually when Nintendo invites press to test a game, they like to give an overall look of what the game is about.
So I guess we're going to suffer those troops for at least 1/3 of the game.

But maybe it's just Mc Kenzie who's annoying an chatty, the rest might be more bearable.
But the feeling of isolation will for sure be impacted.

I'm out. The motorcycle/open world shit was bad enough. Now we have a quippy Marvel-esque sidekick? Does anyone really believe they're going have some restraint with that? If they were, they wouldn't have done this in the first place. Whatever the hell Retro is now, they don't seem to care about the atmosphere or feeling of isolation that has always elevated Metroid games. Should've left the game with Bamco to shit this turd out like 6 years earlier so we could've moved onto something new.

So yeah, I'm writing it off. Hope those with a bit more faith enjoy it, but this absolutely isn't what I want.

I think I'm just gonna mute speech in the game (and hopefully there's a way to kill subtitles as well) and just roleplay that Samus is immediately annoyed by that guy and turns her comms off without saying anything.

Good for you? This reads more like someone who was never going to get it any ways and is/was just LOOKING for something/ anything to complain about why they're not getting it. 🙄 but whatever, I'm sure it's the worst game on the planet because there's a motorcycle and a comic relief character out of a dozen of different characters...worst.game.Ever!

Oh, I'm sorry my criticism doesn't rise to the level of acceptable discourse for you.

No it doesn't. He explicitly states his position, which is that the motorcycle segments and the chatty NPC's are a big turnoff. This is a perfectly common and reasonable criticism.

Yes, it does. It boiled down to "Motorcycle bad because", "Funny character bad because Marvel! Ergo entire game must be trash! And I was totally going to get it but now I'm out"...🙄

Yes, very insightful. Who could argue with that reasoning?

Let's say someone was interested in the game, but was turned off by the NPC dialogue and open world elements. What is an acceptable way to phrase that criticism?

For starters, it's not "open world" it has a hub area, which MP games have had before, it's just larger so that's not exactly an entirely new concept for the franchise.

Also, I've played TONS of games that had annoying characters but I've never completely written off one simply based on a damn character you interact with for like a small portion of the entire 20+hr game.

Saying you are turned off but will wait for actual reviews or more impressions on how these elements affect the entire experience would have been way more believable for someone that was actually interested on the game.

When Nintendo doesnt feature voice acting, boo.
When Nintendo does feature voice acting, boo.

I loved prime 3, sure it wasnt like 1, but it had amazing stuff in it.
Good lord this is such a reductive argument. No one argues against voice acting. They just don't want the same slop that muddies so many other contemporary efforts. It's not that difficult to understand. It's just not as black and white as "voice acting bad."

I don't want to see the argument that 2D Metroid is the spot for isolation either. They're the same IP, no matter what the perspective is. Doesn't mean we need companion NPCs that need to morph into Captain Obvious every five seconds.

Okay, so his criticisms would be valid if and only if he ultimately arrived at the same conclusion you did. Got it.

It not fully open world, but it is an open world element. You might not write something off for those reasons, but other people are entitled to.

Edit: Danny has been writing about Metorid on this forum for over a decade. The idea that he was never interested in Prime 4 is just a lie.

lol I am a huge Metroid fan, indeed. Super Metroid is my favorite game of all time, Metroid Prime 1 is #3, and Prime 2 isn't that far behind.

I'm just willing to call out missteps and changes in direction that I think run counter to what makes the series special. If people don't feel like it's appropriate to be dismissive of game design on a discussion forum, then we're eventually going to run into that same culture of toxic positivity that is absolutely killing game development right now. Ya gotta call it like you see it.

I respect that you are opting out of buying it vs people who do a whole bunch of complaining about it like its a deal breaker just to turn around and buy it anyway. I saw a lot of that here during the Xenoblade 2 character designs reveals.

I'll probably still get Prime 4, but completely respect this opinion.

If that chatty marvel-ass character is in even 10% of the game, that'll probably be the 10% I remember the most, and it would totally ruin my experience. I'm saying that as a gigantic Metroid fan.

It's the same reason why I can't look at an Other M gif without shuddering. At this point, I can't even remember anything else from that game, because the bad parts were so antithetical to Metroid and therefore can't be erased from my memory or separated from that experience. And that goes for a majority of Metroid fans, which is why Other M is almost universally panned.

It's completely reasonable to be concerned about Prime 4 after watching that yellow-painted human abortion Marvel-quip at Samus for what seems to be a lengthy chunk of explorative gameplay. Maybe there will be a payoff; maybe that NPC will get killed in the first act of the game. Maybe that will literally be the only time we encounter a cringey Whedon-esque snark machine. But seeing as how there's a formula for Metroid games that is often established in the beginning of the game, and expanded on later, it's reasonable to assume that chatty NPCs might be part of the package this time.

And that is absolutely a perfectly rational reason to skip this game. A game, may I remind you, based on a franchise of tension, isolation, and self-reliance.

Writing about something doesn't mean you can't be disingenuous about it. Tons of people write about games they hate/shit on all the time. His "argument" was weak and disingenuous...and saying Bamco should have "shit out a turd 6 years ago" doesn't sound like someone that was truly interested in the game.

I don't care if someone has criticism that come off as valid and genuine but his aren't imo. Not sure why some here are so hard up on defending such are shittake on the game..but whatever, go figure. I guess it's "In" to shit on the game atm

Can we at least change the language so we can suffer a bit less?
You can apparently turn off speech entirely. I'm hoping you can turn off subtitles as well. That's absolutely how I'll be playing during those sections.

Except its not disingenuous. He's explaining why he's disappointed about what the previews are saying, and you are claiming he was never interested in the game depsite the evidence proving the exact opposite.

Prime 4 was his most anticiapated game of 2025. How is that hating / shitting on it?

What exactly is your theory here? That the guy has spent the last 10+ years pretending to be Prime fan but actually he's not?

Except he didn't say anything of the sort. Completely writing a game off based on a few minutes of a preview is not respectable imo and one of the dumbest things I've ever seen. How ppl are defending it by adding in their own opinions and talking for him is weird...but again, it's apparently "In" to hate on the game lately.

This is a core issue that I have with the discourse in this thread right now. Yes, of course YouTubers often generate dumb clickbait. But it feels like the insinuation being made is: YouTubers often make clickbait > therefore people who are unimpressed by what they've seen of Prime 4 must be acting disingenuous. (Or in other cases, ignorant.) No, some people just sincerely don't like what they see.
No issue with people having concerns, but of course this is mixed in with the usual drive by comments on peformance. Of course the issues around the NPC's are pretty much pure conjecture, as to their wider inclusion in the overall game. This could be a training area.

If this isn't trolling, then I'm just straight-up at a loss.

Again far too early to tell, but the annoying fell did seem to be offering a tutorial of sorts. Perhaps the other troopers are far more unintrusive. But as I said we simply do not know how much they will be included in the overall game.

He didn't explain shit from what I replied to. A few others tried explaining for him. That's not the same

And saying you aren't even waiting for reviews to drop before claiming you are done with the "turd" that should have "shit out" 6 years ago doesn't exactly sound like someone that was actually interested or invested in it to start with...but whatever keep defending a grown man with a shittake that can't speak for themselves apparently.
