Metroid: Samus Returns Impressions: "I didn't want to stop playing."

I feel like this needs a thread to clear the doubts some people might have on the game because it's being made by MercurySteam.

The game feels fantastic. Holding down the left trigger plants Samus' feet so she can aim in any direction and the X button performs a melee attack that can counter enemy attacks. The prompts to counter are clearly broadcasted with audio and visual cues, and though I missed the first few prompts, it did not take long to block and blast nearly every enemy that I attacked.

As I mentioned before, I did not want to stop playing. The game plays smoothly, the new counter mechanic feels great, and the ability to to scan the environment will hopefully help reduce those moments where you are exploring aimlessly without clear direction.

Not interested in playing a 2D Metroid game that runs at only 30 fps. Sorry Mercury Steam.

I was pretty rough on this game earlier today because I wasn't a fan of the art style, but after watching the treehouse footage I'm sold on it.

The countering seemed cool, and it seemed to play so smoothly. Samus's animations especially stood out to me as being especially well done. I'll probably pick this up.

Always a junior member without failure Lol.

I don't know anything about this dev before this game but from what I saw on the Treehouse and it looks great. Will be purchasing in September!

I remember seeing the chat constantly saying shit like "Move on" and "zzzz" but I was honestly fine seeing more gameplay.

Doesn't surprise me. There's heaps of incredibly talented people at MercurySteam that were stunted by (hopefully now gone) awful management and direction. Nintendo shepherding them is probably a big help.

Lords of Shadow 2 was a fantastic action game held back by many, many baffling decisions that obfuscated it.

Is 60fps a tradition for Metroid games?

Well, all previous 2D games were sprite based so they ran at 60fps, but Metroid Prime games on home consoles have run at 60 as well. I don't believe that's been the case for Hunters or Federation Force, but I may be wrong.

I didn't notice this particular game was running at 30. It's not ideal, but will hardly stop me from playing.

Game looks very cool. I do wonder if the counter mechanic will be overused or make the game too easy. If it's really easy to pull off and you just counter every attack that comes at you will that get boring? Hopefully there's lots of attacks that can't be countered.

If you told me yesterday Sakamoto and Mercury Steam got together to make a Metroid game, and it looks awesome, I would laugh.

But this game looks awesome

They seemed to put a lot of emphasis on the counter... I hope it's not ripe for abuse.

Like it's so OP that you just wait to use it and then open up the "belly" of the enemy and shoot at the weak spot.

There were rumors years ago that MS was working on a Metroid prototype but they shot it down emphatically.

I guess they lied.

I'm pretty sure your interest in this game is directly proportional to the interest GAF (and everybody else) has on your opinion so don't worry, Mercury Steam will be fine

that being said it would be cool if it ran at 60 FPS on New 3DS line Yoshi did

Shame on the people who are looking down on this, your loss. The rest of us will have a blast with it

Is movement with the d-pad or the circle pad? Both? I wouldn't mind using the circle pad for aiming when planted, but I wouldn't want to platform with it.

Mirror of Fate was dogshit so I'll wait for further impressions. Even that game had people amazed by it for some unknown reason.

The only thing I'm not feeling is the Counter.
Looks a bit too powerful, but that just could've been super early enemies.

Still, I'm so excited for another 2D Metroid. Need to get that special edition
