Metroid: Samus Returns (Mercury Steam, Metroid 2 reimagining, 9/15) announced for 3DS

I'm about to pre-order a 3DS game... wtf

This is looking really good! Mercury Steam didn't instill me with confidence, but it looks great and knowing the original level design is mostly intact mostly puts me at ease.

I would like this on the Switch, but I assume Mercury Steam has been working on it for a while.

If they're using the same engine from MoF (it looks like it), they could have used the same tools they did to create MoF HD to create a potential Switch version.

Tbh though, this game would look much worse than MoF with a simple HD coat of paint. I'm completely fine with this staying on the 3DS. 3D should look nice and help the visuals a bit.

I feel I don't understand the 3DS/Switch situation.

You think Nintendo would want to subtly transfer everyone onto the Switch.
And yet they are still doing all this exclusive 3DS stuff.

Even if they just do quick ports for stuff that was already in development for the 3DS. You'd want to move people forwards, not backwards. You want everyone to buy the Switch.

I dunno. I don't get it.

No. 65+ million people own 3DSes. As Reggie said earlier, the 3DS did great sales-wise in 2016, and even if it is on the decline now abandoning a popular system which is still selling well is incredibly foolish, and Nintendo fortunately is not that stupid. The 3DS's game support will be phased out over the next year, it won't stop all at once.

Nintendo wants all of their fans to buy a Switch eventually. They don't want, and can't have, everyone go out and buy one right now, however, because they don't have the supply! Unless you know of 60 million Switches sitting around in a warehouse somewhere? And even then, the 3DS and Switch are both portable, but the Switch's short battery life and large size make it a less portable than a 3DS is so both have a place. It'll be interesting to see whether Nintendo decides to go Switch-only after that or releases something else though, either a new system or some new form factor for the Switch.

I love the physicality of Samus in this. If there's one thing I'm glad they brought over from Other M, it's that.

Game looks cool.

I want a squishy Metroid amiibo

No, thats nonsense. I'm not buying a game I played a very good fan remake for last year for the vague hope that they'll make one that doesn't use crappy 3d models down the line.

"I played a free game that stole assets from my beloved franchise, why would I pay for an original creation in said franchise?"

Then you are proving Nintendos point that Metroid doesnt sell. Doesnt look that bad.

I strongly dislike the melee counter and if me not buying a game I don't want means I don't get future games of the same type that I also wouldn't want, I wouldn't care by default.

If a fan can make a 2d metroid that appealed to me more than what Nintendo does, that's not my problem.

"I played a free game that stole assets from my beloved franchise, why would I pay for an original creation in said franchise?"

Don't be an idiot.

I remember thinking Metroid 2's soundtrack was mediocre outside of the opening tunnel theme, and yet I really want that CD.

Collector in me, I suppose.

ok it looks good, but nothing like Metroid 2 in any way, which is pretty sacred to me. But oh well, I'll just pretend Samus took another Metroid hunting trip to a completely different planet afterwards

Game looks AMAZING!

Special edition with 25-song soundtrack!

Two amiibo including squishy Metroid!

3D trailer on the eShop!

HNNNNNNG!

This looks fun. Looks like a complete re-imagining than a remake--the map was completely different from Metroid II's. Nice to finally see Samus back, and hopefully they can shelve that awful Other M design for good now.

Not keen on the name, but whatever.

Man, that looked fun, but I traded my 3DS away a long time ago. Are those 2DS things worth much or are they just cheap ass junk for the kiddies?

Sakamoto just said that this partnership with Mercurysteam has opened up new potential for the 2D series, hopefully that means Other M will be consigned to the dustbin of history.

Yeah I'm thoroughly sold.

Watch the Treehouse stream if you haven't.

This is a Metroid-ass Metroid game with some great combat, awesome cinematic melee counters, and it just feels like a great evolution of the 2D Metroid formula.

This is basically the game I wanted Other M's gameplay to feel like when I first saw the game.
