MGS3:my GOTY so far

MGS3 is a great friggin game. It's nice that Kojima addressed pretty much all the problems with MGS2 and made it even better than I expected

Best cutscenes ever in a video game too. And one of the best soundtracks ever. And one of the greatest endings ever in a video game. Hell, the game just rocked!

This game is so damn good. Seriously, anyone who even REMOTELY liked MGS1 needs to play this game. It starts off slow in the prologue, but after that the game picks up steam and doesn't let down. PS2 GOTY indeed. Take a back seat San Andreas. Close Quarters Combat kicks ass, the lack of a radar doesn't hurt. Boss fights are the best this series has ever had. The jungle enviroments are amazing. This game is the real deal. It's a shame this one will probably end up selling worse than MGS2. MGS3 redeems the series. And the finish to this game. OH my god the wildest ride I've ever had in a game. Best finish ever and leaves a great lasting impression. A couple other big name games could take a look at this one as inspiration in future games as how to finish them. :D

I love not having a radar system anymore.

My most used item = Binoculars

I evaluate situations and try to take the best course available to me. The best thing about MGS, is when you fuck up, it's not game over. You then gotta react and find a way to get out of the situation.

Plus killing people with a knife = rocking.

and the boss fights have been amazing so far. I've defeated 5 bosses so far...
Ocelot, The Pain, The Fear, The End (awesome boss fight) and The Fury

It is sooooo damn good!

I was literally on the edge of my seat for the last 6-7 hours!! You absolutely must play this game!!

I wasn't convinced by some of the voice acting. Have screamed at the restrictive camera system many times. Have crawled when I meant to run even more times. Wasn't too thrilled by the pacing at the start. Still don't quite like the control system.

But I'm starting to love this game too. :p Definately starts to get better as it goes on. Really diggin the variety of the outside/inside levels and the different situations the game puts you in.

And battery powered sonar & motion tracker > radar. Finally a reason to explore your surroundings rather than avoid the sight cones pacman style

Yeah, the game is bad ass. The cutscenes are completely over the top, but so well directed. I also love the lack of radar. It makes it a lot more tense, and the sneaking and stealth kills are a lot more satisfying. Someone in the MGS3 impressions thread said it already, but the game is like Riddick in that if you get caught you can just go for broke and get out of the situation as fast as possible. I also appreciate the suicide pills. If you mess up, you can just pop one and start a section over again until you get it right. Great game.

Kojima really proves that he could be successful in film-making. The great thing about a videogame is though is that you don't have to edit it down to two hours, you can leave in any scene you want. Harry Gregson-William's soundtrack is absolutely beautiful, and I am improrting it the second I can. Definetly Kojima's grand opus. I can not praise this game enough. If anybody wants to see where the future of videogame storytelling is, play through Snake Eater.

can't wait to play this some more, i'm about 45 minutes or so in and so far i've climbed a tree and got back my bag....

KCEJ as a whole addressed the problems, not just Kojima himself. Stop spl00ging over this guy like he's some kind of God. JEEZUS.

ZOMG KOJIMA REALLY PULLED THROUGH HE CUT DOWN THE CUTSCENES~~!
COME ON KOJIMA YOU SHOULDVE EXPANDED THIS SECTION! >:\\

Shut the fuck up.

Nice sly troll there. :P

Keep going. The prologue is slow. After you get past it the game opens up and really takes off.

True. Now KCEJ just has one last problem to address. :D

What? Kojima made the game himself. Just like how Miyamoto made all those Zelda and Mario games

Have two weeks to think about it.
Ban, plz.

Yeah, just like Miyamoto, Kojima did the coding, the graphics design, the story, the voice acting, the audio, all the testing, AND he manufactured and packaged each game box and game disk by HAND.

"Keep going. The prologue is slow. After you get past it the game opens up and really takes off."

sure - game looks like it's going to be kick ass, but i still get the feel that Kojima (or his writters) have the verbal shits...

why say what you can say in a sentence when you can string it out for 5-6 minutes?

In MGS4 , i want the options to be :

"I played MGS1"
"I played MGS2"
"I played MGS3"
"I've already smashed my CODEC"

Anyways, can't wait to get into the action , i like the whole survival angle.

Once you complete Operation Virtous Mission and get onto Operation Snake Eater there are barely any codec sequences at all the rest of the game. And the ones that are there are relativel brief. Only if you want to talk to people for the most part. Plus if you don't keep plugging along you'll miss the best ending sequence ever for a game. :D

:lol thats funny cause its true. I also just started playing the game.

My GOTY so far, While I'm not yet finished with the game, what I've played has been nothing short of amazing

Been playing every chance I get.
Just got past the part where snake gets the bejezus beaten out of him. I think that whole scene + plus tourture scene (snake's eye getting shot out) is the best MGS cutscene of the whole series. And I still have a bit of game left!

A (single player) game hasn't gotten me so enthralled in a long while.

I beat The End and now I'm in the mountains - holy shit, The Fear and The End were such an amazing boss fights. It's as if the authors took respective scenes from some of the greatest movies, and let you be the main character. I swear, during the fight with The End, my wife and I, all tense from trying to spot the old bastard, were whispering to each other whenever we thought we've seen something suspicious... I can't remember that a game brought such an atmosphere in a gameplay sessiong since, well, Ico. Just pure unfiltered awesomeness. I'm seriously splooging over this game, and can't even imagine what the last few hours everyone is talking about will be like.

Have crawled when I meant to run even more times
Tip - it won't happen if you just remember to press the X button *strongly* whenever you want to stand up from the crawling position. The problem you described used to happen to me a lot in MGS2 - I would crawl, then press the button to stand up (or so the logic would tell me to do) then push forward to run - however, Snake/Raiden would only be crouching at that point, and I would end up crawling again. Not anymore! In MGS3, when you are in the crawling poistion, if you tap the button lightly, you end up in crouching position - but if you press it stronger, you completely stand up. It's one of many new little things that I really like in the game.

True. Now KCEJ just has one last problem to address.
What?

Just go ahead and say it. I know you want to.

Best game ever.

I'm a little over 6 hours in, and yeah, this is the best game this year as far as I've played, hell, the best game this generation. Its amazing. CQC is awesome, the game is jaw droppingly good to look at, and the presentation as a whole is just so dead on.

I actually find myself choosing to talk to people on my codec to get a bit more info on the area, enemies, and weapons. Never thought I'd say that after playing MGS2.

Metal Gear as a series just took a huge as step forward I think. This is the first true survival stealth game. I get that fighting to stay alive feeling like I got from Breath of Fire V, and I love that in a video game. That feeling of tenseness that only a very challenging game can provide.

Now if only a fighting game would take this same "survival first" direction, we could really have something.

I'm also betting that Kojima and crew could write a great movie if they tried.

Initially it felt a bit awkward but it slowly grows on you, beating teh shit out of enemies with the CQC system is immensely pleasing.

Ignore - don't want to turn this thread into something that it shouldn't be.

My apologies.

So true. I absolutely love every single supporting character. Great voice acting all around.

So am I the only one that finds the voice acting, a lot of the story, and most especially the dialogue absolutely hillarious?
I mean, it's like watching a non-stop comedy, when Snake first said "can you hear me Major Tom" I nearly spurted coke all over the TV, and the followup with the girl and him discussing monster movies turning into er... "flirting" still hurts my stomach from all the laughing.

Admitedly, I never played english voice MGS before, and Snake's english voice is obviously deliberately funny, but nevertheless, I'm enjoying myself quite a bit.

All in all - it's really refreshing to see a game writting that knows better then trying to take itself too seriously, even though the underlying story theme IS serious and more grounded in reality then 90% of the dark and gritty game stories I've seen recently that DO take themselves overly serious.

Oh and on topic - I love the visual direction of the game - after all the complaints I've heard about color scheme and what not, the game actually feels pretty damn spot on to me in that regard.

Definitely my GOTY. I mean this game never stops to amaze you, even in your second run through. You just keep finding new funny conversations, new beautiful sceneries, new ways to fight the bosses... I mean I really wonder how the f'ck Kojima could come up with so many crazy but brilliant ideas and actually took the trouble implementing them in the game?

Yeah, it's all the way it's supposed to be. I find the whole concept very charming, actually :) Just wait untill you get to hear one army character start explaining the feasability and usability of the 'walking tank' :P

If a game like MGS3 makes me end up playing almost 20 hours staight in a session, red baggy eyes and all (I haven't done something like this in years, like back in my college days!) I guess it would be one of my choices for GOTY too =P

Simply put, great game. Gonna give it a second run soon to try out all kinds of different tactics, and I rarely do that after finishing any game nowadays...

Like what I posted in the sticky topic, they should have put Eva in Rumble Roses as a total cross-promotional gimmick =P

I dunno, I mean at this point I cant really dissociate Hayters voice from Snake....
Then Snake was horrible in this one. :P

And yeah, a lot of the VA is supposed to be shit. *roll eyes* No, some of it is just weakly done and disengaging. Granted, most of it is great.

GotY for me, and I only just defeated The End.

Halo2 is shite and such a one dimensional piece of garbage compared to this. Even Half Life 2 doesn't hold a candle to MGS3, I think (well Half Life 2 is damn good though)

VA's don't bother me much, The Boss's VA seemed crappy at first but I lived with it. Hayter's voice sounds fine to me too

I don't like
Colonel Campbell's
voice though, but at least he isn't invovled in the game, really

Definitely agree with damn near every post in here. This game isn't merely PS2 GOTY -- it's console GOTY. Kojima has concocted a masterpiece, a gripping story artfully melded with unsurpassedly intuitive play mechanics and some of the best visuals seen on any console. It's a viscerally engaging tour de force, an apology for mgs2 -- a game that redefines the genre its namesake birthed. This is the type of game that justifies the power underneath the hoods of these next-generation machines. It's what we've been waiting for. It's great that a sleeper (come on, MGS3 is a sleeper hit) may turn out to be GOTY.

you forgot to mention:

- really BAD acting by a lot of the characters (Ocelot, the soldiers, The Fear et c)

- a camera system that almost completely destroys the gameplay
