If we are including remakes and older games, then easily Rise of the Ronin and Xenoblade Chronicles X DE. Just fun to play, straight to the point, little to no pretention.

Assassins Creed felt like hot garbage covered in vomit with a thick coating of diarrhea.

KCD2 is a landmark game and will go down as one of the best games of this generation once all is said and done. I can't see how anyone who has played that can vote for anything else in good conscience.
This^^^^^^, so much this.

I just made it to Kuttenberg after 80 odd hours. Unbelievable game, runs like a champ on PC too.

Will take a monster of a game to top it.

This is the one major game I haven't played. What other games do you like that are similar to it so I know if we have the same gaming values?

Imagine a Bethesda game when they were top tier, but without the magic and dragons.

Just fucking around in the world is pure joy, then you have a well written story, that's genuinely funny at times. Its not perfect, combat could be better and there is a little jank here and there.

Its a 9.5/10 from me.

Edit: It can be quite slow at times though and dialogue heavy, so if you are the type to skip cutscenes and story beats i'd probably give it a wide birth.

I recently dived back in to rise of the ronin again to wade off any thoughts of getting AC Shadows.

The combat is just sensational.

I might get it again for PC just for comparison purposes, if I can't get it running better than it does on the pro then simple refund on Steam.

Ah ok. That's what I was thinking. Not for me then unfortunately but explains why many people love it. I imagine people who like something like Skyrim or Fallout would enjoy it then.

Yeah. It's really good as is the general density of the content and the movement with the glider and such. Going from to not being able to just in Shadows was a big no for me.

This being a thread kind of just opened my eyes, just realized I haven't bought a new game so far in 2025 lol. I literally couldn't have a vote right now! Still optimistic about the future of this year though. A new Ghosts game and hopefully slay the spire 2 to stay on track would be awesome and I can pretty much guarantee they will both easily be in my top 5 by years end

Obviously you now have to buy all the games listed and play them before reporting back.

Unlike Bethesda games, KCD is actually well written, with great memorable characters, motivations that make sense, natural sounding dialogue, handcrafted quests with no filler or "radiant quest" nonsense. It is closer to Witcher 3 than Skyrim in that regard.

Atomfall. It borrows ideas from other games but ultimately tries to carve it's own path and does so successfully. It's nice to see games that try to do something a bit different and succeed.

I also fucking loved Guns of Fury, well worth checking out on Steam or Switch if you're into Metroidvanias with a good sprinkle of Metal Slug.

I haven't purchased any games released this year, either. I've been replaying older games mostly.

That's why i likened it to when BGS were actually decent. Not the shite they have churned out recently.

The writing in KCD2 is some of the best I've ever come across in videogames.

KCD2 is a legitimate GOTY candidate. The rest not as much. Like if KCD2 was released last year it easily would win, this year it’s only competition is GTA6. In fact if you didn’t vote for it I assume you didn’t play it or are a massive outlier

If it was held now, I bet Split Fiction would win. Haven't played it myself but seems like the media pick and perfectly made gameplay, etc.

Vibe Coding - GOTY 2025 - 2040 (that’s when singularity occurs 😉).
Yeah we only have a few years, best make the best of it. Till then, if you’re creative and like building things, it’s super rewarding. Then let’s just hope we get the “humans are like cats” outcome 🤣

Edit - 2040 is crazy optimistic. We have 4 years at most lol.

Edit 2 - realised the other day I’ve not played a single game on my playstation for almost 2 months now, the moment I finish work till the time I go to bed, I do nothing but vibe code games.

I put it as AC shadows. Although the best game I played this year is Animal well so far and it’s not even close.

Doom will destroy shadows, and DS2 will destroy doom.

Fall has NG4 and GTA6 potentially to consider to dethrone DS2.

This year is a good year for me.

Avowed is my game of the year. I don't want to enter the garden, because I don't want it to be over Lol. Next is assassin's creed shadows. Also looking for to trying out Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 and South of Midnight.

Its MH Wilds for me, but it will probably gonna be replaced by DS2. While i loved my time in MH Wilds, the game need more and harder content, and it will probably gonna take a while untill all that type of content is added to the game.

KCD2 and inst even a fair fight, plays great, runs great, is beautiful, no MTX, great story.

Shadow is a beautiful game that plays like shit ( gameplay wise )
MHWilds has great gameplay but runs like shit and the multiplayer is a disgrace as always.
Gaiden is a OK game, maybe best action game, but no Goty contender imo.
Avoided is pure trash.
Split Fictio may win best multiplayer.

the rest i didnt played yet.

Usually this time of year I am playing games from the previous year or in my backlog. I will say AC Shadows is fucking great. It'll easily be surpassed later this year though.

I want to play KCD2 but I just weathered hours of AC and think I wasted all my tutorial onboarding patience on it.

KCD2 and it isn't even close (also played MH Wilds, Ender Magnolia, Tales of Iron 2, currently 30 hours into Khazan, will be playing through Split Fiction with a friend soon). It is a monumental release and one of the best games of the generation.

Having said that, I'm pretty sure Death Stranding 2 will be my overall GOTY with GTA6 (assuming it releases in 2025) the only thing that can contest it. I'd love to be surprised though, last year I didn't think anything would beat Rebirth as my GOTY until a little game called Astrobot came along to take the crown, let's see what happens.

No worries.

I will give it a complete rundown.

Melee, ranged, stealth, persuasion… something will feel good.
Basically once you find someone who can teach you a skill, just repeat train with them as much as possible til you level up a bit. I actually find the sword combat super rewarding now, and combat is usually all I care about in games, it’s fun once you learn master strike

99 hours in Avowed so that for now.
Death Stranding 2, Expedition 33 and Doom the Dark Age will probably take top spot by June.
