Metal Gear Solid is great. I would actually recommend playing The Twin Snakes on GC if you have it. You can shoot in first person which makes a big difference. You don't have the cool CQC moves in the first two, but you get a radar. Metal Gear Solid 2 is still a really good game, but the story gets really weird at times and very preachy. I'd say they are both worth playing though. Especially since you just beat MGS3. Now you can play MGS1 and MGS2 in chronological order.
Yeah why would anyone reccomend Twin Snakes over the original? Cutscenes are mostly terrible, horrible music, controls arent as smooth as psone, and if I remember correctly NO VR Missions...wtf??

Oh yeah. Please tell me about all these great online multiplayer options that will keep you playing that game for years. Oh wait....
I'm not trolling. I'm just putting some things in perspective to the junior member in the first page who was trolling Halo 2 for absolutely no reason in a fucking MGS3 thread. If I wanted to troll here, I would go on and say how Splinter Cell : Chaos Theory will be leaps and bounds ahead of this game.

you were probably talking to me. my statement was speaking to all the hype on the GoTY front runners, which I still say don't hold a candle to the depth of MGS3. 1 player or multiplayer- no matter.
One thing I REALLY loved was all the raiden references.
Raikov
's voice (sounds like such a fag, I love it)
"-I thought this was supposed to make me more popular
-No it certainly doesn't"
when you undress him, he's wearing some hot underwear. He's naked in the The Sorrow river part
Raikov gay relationship with Volgin
, that impressed me very much, that they would add that in the game. Konami is able to laugh at their own "mistakes" (sort of speaking), I find that very admirable compared to the stale PR we usually get from other companies.
"What a coincidence, Raikov's first name is Ivanov, or Ivan, which is John in english, or Jack, just like your name"
All that shit made me laugh hard and I still think about it.
I fucked with the codec so goddamn much, asked medic about all the food I had, asked the other guy about all the gear I had (you equipe gear and Codec him, then he tells you about it) "Snake, what the hell are you wearing?"
"Is there any way I can take my pants off too?"
(for naked camo)
Seriously, if you havent used the codec at all, you've missed a significant part of the game. You guys can whine and bitch about the codec, but MGS wouldn't be MGS without it for me, by a fucking longshot. In fact, the codec is the one thing that it has that all other games lack. The need to want to fuck around instead of going on with the quest.
It's a special game for me. I've very near the end, and by the end, I mean the ending, so everyone STFU. I'm waiting for a good moment to finish it.
I just thought the First person view did not work right in the MGS1 world. It was not designed for this gameplay. It made it too easy.
The voice acting was a lot worse.
The cutscenes were utterly rediculous. Sure, MGS is known for it's unrealistic characters/scenarios, but this was taking it too far. Snake leaping over missles and doing Matrix slow-mo flips was so out of place. It was laughable to me... Put this kind of crap in a Devil May Cry game or something.

We shouldn't be talking about Splinter Cell anymore, as we already know the game plays like shit. The 3rd person camera is better, but the hit detection is atrocious. At least I know in MGS2/MGS3 when I shoot in first person and aim at the guard I will hit him.

Not sure what you're talking about, I had no problems with that.
The first second you go into aiming mode, you see the 'aimer' focusing, any shot you fire while you're still trying to 'focus' would miss.
it's been a while since I played SC though.
On a related note, MGS3's aiming is perfect, I'm able to shoot guys in the head with my tranquilizer from so far their heads took up 4 pixels on the screen.

There have been plenty of times in SC where I go into a crouching position and steady my cursor at the head of an enemy, fire away and MISS. The bullet goes whizzing by above his head. It gets ridiculous at times. I like the 3rd person camera in SC, but hate practically everything else. Looks nice, though.
:lol :lol :lol :lol :lol Please. Plays like shit :lol :lol :lol :lol
You can dislike the game, but to say the game "plays like shit". Let me be the first to predict that Chaos Theory will be the first runner up EASILY for Game Of The Year in 2005.
You won't see me saying a bad thing about Chaos Theory. That looks hot. It will have to be a hell of a game to top MGS3 though.
Go read some developer interviews. They even admit there is a problem with the targetting in Splinter Cell.
Let us also not forgot about the extremely linear levels and trial and error gameplay SC has. Tunnel vision. For a game with a much better camera system, I'm surprised the gameplay is so inferior to even MGS2. MGS3 squashes it with the addition of CQC.

Wasn't expecting this to be my GOTY, but how can I doubt the greatness of this game? It's supah fantastic. It wasn't hyped up as much as GTA:SA or Halo 2, but it's WAY better than both of them. This is the first time in a long ass time that I've been so riveted to a game, not only doe the gameplay rock (after getting acclimated to it), but the storyline, pacing, bossbattles, locales, etc, etc all rock. Hats off to KCEJ and Kojima.

You touched upon everything wrong with Splinter Cell. It's slavishly linear gameplay is a huge turnoff; bordering on dull, the narrative has always been nothing more than a distanct backdrop; the visuals are overrated, coming nowhere near the resplendence of MGS3. Chaos Theory won't touch MGS3.
I hope Chaos Theory is as good as MGS3, I really do. I just remember hearing before the PT release how it was supposed to be a wide open gameplay, letting you think of a number of ways to get through a mission, when the extent of this was really picking one of three ways to get through a train. Being that the extent of 'wide open-ness' was so devoid in PT, contrary to the hype it was given, I'm not going to hold my breath for CT.
But it's really not fair, overall, to compare these games, anyways. It's like comparing a documentary to an action movie: the doc is very interesting and will keep you glued to your TV, but it does it for different reasons than the action flick does. If you want good Tom Clancy stories, go read the books. Don't look for it in his video games.
SC might play better than MGS if a few issues were addressed. The aiming reticle is inaccurate, and headshots aren't guaranteed kills. I've shot a guard in the face TWICE with a pistol and he didn't even flinch. At least with MGS guards become injured by bullet wounds (eg. limp legs and arms). And the Mission Failed garbage in SC is unbearable as well.
I just heard Major Zeros rave on James Bond and I am laughing ass of at the dialog :lol
I am only at the part where I recieve the key card from the fat drunk (forgot his name) and this game is blowing me away(I just started to learn the CQC gameplay....OMGPWNZ!!!)....

With the games coming up next year, it'd be lucky to be in the top 20 based on the previous games.
GT4, FFXII, DWVIII, Jade Empire, Forza, Zelda, Xenon launch games, Ridge Racer PSP, God of War.... the list goes on and on of games it couldn't hope to compare to. Be happy with the nice graphics.
anyways, mgs3 is probably the best game i've played this year too...konami seems to have taken everything i disliked about mgs2, thrown it out the window, and then apologized for it.
I used to like Splinter Cell, and still respect a lot about it...
...but Metal Gear is just so ahead of it now.
See, the problem with Splinter Cell, is if you do something wrong, make a mistake, it's game over. While in Metal Gear, you make a mistake, you face the consequences then have to think about a way to get out of it.

I rented MGS1 (PS1) ages ago to see what the buzz was about, and it was good, but annoyed me (the ridiculous dialogue was particularly irking: "His name is Snake. Snake? Yes, Snake. This is a CD. CD? Yes, CD. CD? yes, CD. Snake?"). Bought MGS2 on PS2 when it came out, played through it about 2/3, and got got extremely annoyed with the codec, overly touch-myself-i'm-great cutscenes, and control issues. Didn't play it after that.
Then MGS:Twin Snakes came out, and it was a chance for a non-PS1 owning fanboy to give it another solid chance, and I did, and thought it was pretty good. Good enough to return to MGS2 for a proper play through (when I went through it the first time, I had to say I never played MGS1 before, and thus missed out on the tanker - never understood the hate for Raiden, though), which I enjoyed a lot more that next time around, particularly because the story made more sense. Game-wise, I thought 2 was better, but the story got totally ridiculous, and by the end it was an utter farce.
Still makes me want to play 3.
In short, Twin snakes made me like the series.
edit: And man, did I ever have fun with the theatre mode in MGS2...Solid being stalked by old ladies was hilarious!
Why all the hate on Splinter Cell Chaos Theory? It was the most impressive game at E3 this year. I can't wait to play it. If you need to call it shit to make your game here look better in your eyes then whatever.
Seems like a lot of people are hating on the SC series because they did not like the previous installments, and besides the cooperative play, SC:CT doesnt seem like that much of a change from those previous installments. Also, since when were awards from E3 anything special? Didnt they give an award to Blinx one year?
Well anyways, mgs3 is my goty. The gameplay was by far the best in the series. I was a little wary of not playing with radar, but im glad its gone. Im forced to look around and plan my COA instead of looking at the radar, which is very nice. The story was just fantastic too. If anyone is worried about it being convoluted like mgs2, worry not, because mgs3's story is pretty straightforward and not to hard to follow.

Keep telling yourself that. I'm just going by IGN, GameSpot, Game Informer, GameSpy, etc praising the game and giving it high praise at E3.

It's amazing how awards go from respected to worthless depending on who won.

Hey, i dont have any hate for the SC series. I hope its an amazing game, because then id get to play another amazing game. :lol I just got the impression from the trailers, etc, that the game hasnt changed much from the previous installments besides the coop play. If that is not the case, and they change the trial and error gameplay and crappy aiming and some other things im too stupid to think of, then i will definently give the game a try.
Anyways, i personally never put much stock on awards given to trailers and demos.

Yup, exactly. Splinter Cell is primitive compared to MGS3. Maybe Chaos Theory will see changes for the better, but I doubt it. It seems all they're concerned with is making a pretty engine. Meh.

I like SC, but I absolutely love MGS. MGS3 totally redeemed whatever issues I had with the last game and then some.
Honestly, at this point Metal Gear has evolved into some so different from Splinter Cell now that it's hard to compare the two.
MGS3 turned the series to a "badass action movie hero simulator" rather than a pure sneaking game that Splinter Cell has strived for. There were so many moments in MGS3 that seems like stuff straight out of those oldschool action movies that it made everything just so much more fun to go through.
I think in terms of graphics, SC:CT will be the more technically capable game, with impressive shaders + normal maps all over the place....but it will fall short in MGS3 in the art direction department, as the MGS guys really nailed it in terms of what they can do and can't do with the hardware they have to work with.

Not exactly primitive, just more realistic when it comes to stealth. You weren't finished after one mistake in Splinter Cell either, but some missions did fail if you were seen too many times...which makes sense if the mission is truely supposed to be based on stealth. It also has to be this way design wise, because sam fisher is so slow and such a lousy chance that he'd never have a chance in anything BUT stealth. The goal is to get truely get through levels without being seen...not get through, and maybe get seen and just get a lousy ranking at the end if you do. And like MGS, there are usually many ways to get out of certain situations in Splinter Cell.
MGS just isn't that hardcore about it, so it's less frustrating. It also is more of an action game, with the big boss battles, chase sequences, etc and mixes things up with dramatic cut scenes and humor. Splinter Cell is just straight to the point, like Rainbow Six in a way. It limits Sam's abilities to force you to play as intended. In Rainbow Six it's unit placement and methods of attack, in Splinter Cell it's just stealth which isn't so bad. Just more boring then the flashy stuff
Sorry I'm joining the convo late. But yea MGS3 blew my expectations fully away. The story, the characters, the boss fights. Everything I loved about MGS returned in this one in some way or form.
Also I was wondering if anyone had the soundtrack on their PC. I'm DYING for the track during the end of the game and that is in the Japanese commerical that was in another post.
