...what are they upset about...?

An African American is being played by a white actor. On principal that's kind of fucked up.

These two friends of mine argue that it's sort of a spiritual blackface, because cross-race acting will generally lead to stereotype.

Just get a light skinned black person, damn

plenty of us out there

you just gotta put in more effort to find us

If Aaliyah's brother can play her, and Paul Walker's brother can play him. Then of course LaToya could play Micheal
I can't wait til this loses in the Best Comedy Oscars against John Wick 2: Wickerman

Michael Jackson in 2001 was not just a "light skinned black person". Whatever the fuck he turned himself into by that time could only be done justice by Andy Serkis in a motion capture suit.

I honestly don't see a problem with this. It's about portraying the way he looked after the 80's. If this was a movie about his rise to stardom and it featured an actor who didn't resemble his childhood and young adulthood looks then it would be very odd. It's like if they were making a movie about Elvis's final month, and they featured a buff in-shape actor.

On one hand, it feels weird for a white man to be playing an African-American.

At this point, it shouldn't feel weird. Jesus Christ wasn't white, but everyone believes it due to the excellent marketing efforts from the church.

Hollywood is really trying to push MJ as a white person. When the new generation of kids grow up seeing this movie, they might really believe MJ was a white guy. Couldn't have cast a light-skinned black guy and give him make-up? SMH

This is a mess. I'm not really sure what should be done though.

Nah, it should be a black person. There isn't an excuse. Just do what Wayan's brothers in White Chick (can't believe I am advocating their white face ugh).

I mean, it isn't THAT hard to make a black man look like MJ... I would find it REALLY strange and even offensive if it is a white person playing MJ.

I mean, people have already been genuinely fooled that Jesus looks like a white man, I wouldn't be surprised that people would begin to believe MJ was white all along. And yes, I really believe people are that stupid.

The actual news worthy thing about this should be that the story never actually happened. I am a Michael Jackson expert, and there was no road trip with Brando and Taylor after 9/11. Jackson did send busses for his stranded fans though.

Also Michael didn't bleach his skin. He had vitilligo. He did have a lot if plastic surgery in his life though, but his skin was changing regardless of what he could try and do.

Well, he definitely ended up looking much more like a white person for the majority of his adult life, so in that regard it makes more sense to cast him with a white actor.

It doesn't sound like a serious movie, so they could probably get away with a black actor + white makeup, but it would probably look stupid.

Michael Jackson looked white at around that time in his life, so it's fine imo.

It'd look stranger if a black guy was playing him.

They could pick someone that looked like a younger / blacker Michael Jackson.

I don't think the movie really needs to faithfully portray the way he looked at that specific time, I don't think his appearance has any relevance to the plot or characters dynamics.
They could do a Thriller era Michael Jackson, who is still very recognisable.

Or just keep him off screen.

If there's any biopics I'm interested in it's one for Michael but I would mean one that covers his entire life. This is just covering a very small part and the casting seems weird and wrong.
