I honestly think Bungie just craves their independence (while simultaneously looking for a daddy to keep them financially secure). They broke off from Microsoft and shopped themselves around and ended up with Activision with an unprecedented agreement that they would get to keep their IP. Then they broke off from Activision and maintained independence before shopping themselves around with the clause that they would basically be independent. It wouldn't surprise me if down the road Bungie splits from Sony lol.

I think Sony won't care about whatever Bungie is doing as long as they are successful and can help their other studios develop GaaS titles. Sony is pretty hands off in general, and just lets studios that are proven successful do the good work they've established.

Activision is completely different, far more active. And Microsoft, the same thing (forcing them to continue churning out Halo). Out of any major publisher, Sony is easily the top of the heap when it comes to a landing spot for any independent company through acquisition.

Tell that to the FTC.
Take 2, Activision, EA and Ubisoft are off the limit for these 2 companies, if this deal fails.

The FTC doesn't have to be gamers to understand different companies with different market caps and impact on the industry.

It's apples and oranges.

Neither T2 or Ubisoft are off limits, regardless of what happens here.

I don't know, I hope you're right, but Days Gone underperformed and that IP was taken out back behind the shed. We don't really know exactly what Bungie's acquisition came along with, like what clauses.

At the end of the day, if Bungie games don't perform well (like their rumored Myth game or their next new IP), I could see Sony wanting to steer Bungie's ship. All depends on what was agreed to when Bungie was acquired.

I think the Bungie/Sony partnership is good though, have no reason to believe otherwise at the moment.

I don't think Days Gone underperformed (sales wise). It underperformed critically. And there was a clash within Bend. Most of the workers did not get along with the studio founder, possibly due to generational issues. And there seemed to be an internal conflict about chasing a new IP vs. continuing Days Gone. I don't think this was a Sony directed thing.

The thing about GaaS titles is that Bungie doesn't need all of them to be megahits as long as they have some (like Destiny) that do really well, so it would really take massive underperformance of all their IP for Sony to need to possibly intervene in some way. More likely, I think Sony would just sell off the studio if they found it wasn't living up to their long term expectations

GTA5 is in the top 5 most played games of all time. No Call of Duty is. I think it was Chile that polled Call of Duty gamers and even among them, GTA becoming exclusive would incentivize them to switch consoles more than CoD becoming exclusive.

GTA would have the same importance on it that Call of Duty has, and Sony would be buying from the market leader's position. Sony would not be able to shrink it's position to the point where it could argue buying Take Two would be to compete.

Maybe regulators would let it slide because Sony isn't "big tech", but they'd have one hell of a hard time. I think the same would be said about EA and Fifa.

Square Enix, Capcom, Sega, Bandai Namco or other publishers that don't have a game that is a cornerstone of gaming, would probably go through with ease. Ubisoft too probably with how much Assassin's Creed has lost relevance.

I don't think Sony would mind if Bungie remained independent with their IP everywhere. They wanted them for their expertise and used retention incentives to at least prevent short term talent loss from a split.

They didn't want exclusive IPs so no loss remaining multiplatform. They would seriously be facing a MS acquisition induced FPS IP shortage on Playstation if they went back to MS though, so securing them came with that defensive benefit too.

Wasn't aware of the internal stuff at Bend. Only remember reading articles at the time that Days Gone 2 wasn't happening because it underperformed financially and if players wanted a Days Gone 2 they should have bought the game.

Days Gone actually sold really well for a new IP. It was by far Bend's biggest seller, as they were a Vita developer previously. I don't see how it underperformed financially in that context.

What happened is that the Studio founder didn't get along with staff very well and he wanted to continue Days Gone, but the rest of the studio wanted a new IP. Ultimately, the founder was let go and they are now working on a new IP.

In subsequent interviews, John Gavin mentioned that his management style clashed with the employees and he probably was not fit to be in that sort of role by his own admission

Oh for sure, I think Sony will be happy with Bungie, I just don't know if Bungie will want to stick around forever. Just basing it off of how often Bungie has vied for their independence, I could see any control Sony wants to put on Bungie being met with Bungie wanting to split. But from what Bungie/Sony has said, Sony looks to be very hands off. So I doubt that'll happen.

But Sony comes in from the position of the biggest console, and releasing it on PC too means they cover a huge part of the market. Xbox being in third means they are at a larger disadvantage by being exclusive
No offense, but I'm gonna need you to pick a narrative and stuck with it. We either live in a universe where Nintendo exists or we don't. You decide. But this "Playstation is the biggest console", and "Xbox being in third" shit has got to stop.

Nintendo doesn't compete in the same ecosystem, and I consider Switch more of a handheld mobile device than a console.

That's not going to happen. When one AAA or "AAAA" flop or canceled project that took 6-8 years bankrupts your company...

Then let it bankrupt them.

If the industry is unable to financially sustain itself then it will crumble and reset, that wouldn't be the worst thing in the world considering the amount of bloated soulless (and quote frankly cynical when it comes to practices around microtransactions etc) crap we get these days from the AAA space.

This industry loves to bite off more it can chew.

Allright i finally did it. Got the ezekiel seal of approval. Was getting kinda worried as he never laughed at all my previous posts.

The linkman between Bend Studios and Sony HQ would not allow a Days Gone 2 pitch past him. Sony never got the chance to say no. That's why Days Gone 2 wasn't a thing, not John Garvin and Jeff Ross clashed with the newer staff (but it was admitted there was a clash of personalities/approaches)

linkman?

All Microsoft's acquisitions are for the greater good of the world. :messenger_clapping:
Like GitHub and Copilot that are causing all sorts of issues to opensource projects.
It's like Microsoft used to hate on opensource and finally found a way to screw them over.

Not sure if it was posted here, but Microsoft's lawyers felt threatened by 10 gamers that also started a lawsuit against the acquisition and tried to shut that down, US judge said "no, no".

But Microsoft has so many lawsuits going on that the fact they are even given a chance at such a deal it's crazy on its own.

I don't think there is any journalist that shills like this for PlayStation or take care of their agenda in their published articles. And if "nobody hears about them" that just means that there aren't any.

If you know of any, please share their names.
Back in the day Greg Miller and Colin Moriarty were big Sony fanboys. I don't keep up with fanboys or Twitter accounts for people I don't care about.

Sorry that Xbox or PC fans aren't as dedicated as Sony fans at posting Twitter screenshots.

There is being a fanboy and then there is being a shill. Those guys are no where near the insanity of what guys like jez corden do.

I don't see any form of console warring by Greg Miller or Colin Moriarty either. No spreading of FUD/bashing of Xbox or any form of bootlicking to the extent Jez and gang are doing.

The fact that we have to think so hard of a Sony equivalent of Jez Corden/Tom Warren/Destin Legarie and Ryan McCaffrey says a lot.

These four clowns need to conduct themselves in a more professional manner.

If you're a paid professional and an adult, you jolly well behave like one.

This thread is hilarious

So many posts like that, oh the irony
There's a giant gulf between a few goofballs sucking MS's dick so much their tweets sound like ads written by MS and believing the vast majority of the media (and I guess the government now :messenger_tears_of_joy:) is against MS save those aforementioned goofballs, who are actually the good guys.

Oh, wait. You're banned. Hmm.

Seems like a lot even for Microsoft standards.

I only know Ryan McCaffrey on that list just because he used to work for IGN. I honestly don't know why people keep posting things from Twitter guys.

These are not Twitter guys, these are "journalists." Two of them write for Windows Central, a huge publication. PlayStation has no shill/fanboy who poses as journalists.

Anyway, it's best to leave this discussion here and get back on the thread.
