Microsoft Announces Windows 10

I think we can safely say that Windows 10 is the one that comes with the biggest changes since Vista, right? In terms of UI and features. Even bigger than 8, considering both Modern and Desktop work together now.

Well... in terms of traditional windows... it's the largest change since windows 95.

Yeah, but what I meant is that there were many times they basically refined and added just some new features. 10 has A LOT of new features and is finally dropping the Vista icons, almost 10 years later. And even includes a new major kernel version.

Windows key + start typing only works if your taskbar is on the bottom.

I'm sure there's one guy in a cube at Microsoft who reported that months ago and they told him to shut up because no one else used it like that.

I'm not digging the latest iteration of the Start Menu which is a shame because I thought the last version was really good.

Will they still fix stuff even with the consumer preview out? or will the final product be the same? things like compatibility, etc mainly is what i am wondering about.
I expect the Consumer Preview to be something akin to a beta version. The Technical Preview has been something between beta and alpha in terms of eh... "ordinary" development cycles.

They will obviously keep updating the Consumer Preview on a regular basis - once out. Does this mean that the Consumer Preview and Windows 10 Final will look radically different? Who knows.

My taskbar is at the bottom and it still doesn't work, I have to type stuff into cortana.

did it break second screen display? it won't pick up my monitor.
Works for me

I agree, even the full screen start menu sucks now. I liked the transparency.

hm. weird. i tried restarting. gonna check the plugs but it was working flawlessly before the update.

I think it's still a heavy work in progress since we can't change the color even (unless i'm missing something). I liked the old look better as well. They fixed the problem where I couldn't turn on num lock, though!

Cortana seems useless so far. Doesn't know how to open programs, only search shit on Bing. I don't really see the point.

Can I not reduce the size of the start menu? I don't use any of the apps and in the older builds if you unpinned them the start menu would shrink, but in this it keeps the space so I have my most used on the left and then there's a big block of nothing on the right where the apps used to be.

I keep getting an error when doing the update. After it downloads and installs, it checks the PC followed by error saying something about the Modern Setup Host not working?

Hold on, friend! I'd love to share with you some swell news about the Windows 8 Metro UI! Wait, where are you going?
Ok, so I installed the latest version on my Surface Pro 3 and the results are really not good.

Aside from the fact that performance is terrible (screen redraws are extremely slow) there are other issues.

I can understand why they removed the charm bar for desktops but on a tablet it was the quickest way to access the Start screen, especially when using it portrait mode. Now I need to press the button which is on the bottom of the device when holding it in portrait and that requires 2 hands. Really hate this change.

The taskbar is visible at all times when in tablet mode. This is terrible. I don't want to see the taskbar when I'm trying to read a comic. I think there is a way to change this behaviour but I haven't found it yet.

Speaking of comics, my reader doesn't work any more. It says it can't read that format. No idea what's up there.

All my apps are unpinned after updating. When you first update you're greeted with a mostly blank start screen with a text list on the left. A text list is pretty useless, especially on a tablet, I just want to have a full start screen like in 8.

Also, and this is likely the bug they were talking about in the known issues, the tablet doesn't turn off the screen when pressing the power button. It goes black but I can see the screen is still lit. The machine is off right now but I can hear the fan going and it's really hot. This is actually the first time I've ever noticed the fan since getting this when is launched.

So far I'm really not seeing this as an improvement. Very disappointed.

On performance: Make sure you check Windows Update. There's a driver published today that is basically required.

Taskbar: Hit the full-screen button in the upper-left. It's next to the Maximize button.

Apps being unpinned: Yeah, I hope they'll introduce start screen migration in the final version. Right now it's just not there, which sucks.

Most importantly - submit this feedback via the Windows Feedback app!!

Yeah, I'm trying to run all the updates now, it's using Microsoft Basic Display Adapter for the display driver which is probably where the shitty performance is coming from. It's downloading updates right now but going slow.

I did notice the full screen button and it works for some apps and not for others, albeit I only tried 2 so far. However the taskbar should be hidden at all times in tablet mode or at least there should be an option for that. I have no need for it when I'm using my SP3 as a tablet which is how I use it the majority of the time. I also miss the Desktop button. I understand that you guys are trying to remove the line between desktop apps and modern/universal apps but this is feeling much more like when I used to use Windows 7 on my EP-121 and much less how my SP3 was with Win 8.1 and that's not a good thing.

I also don't need a text list on the left side of the Start screen, swiping up to see all apps works MUCH better.

The new left swipe task switcher is a huge improvement over the old way of doing it but not having an easy way to get to the Start screen with one hand is a major flaw. I'm often laying down with the tablet on my chest or stomach and having to tilt up the tablet to press the Windows button is extremely clunky and uncomfortable.

EDIT: Just caught your edit, yes, I'm going to do a full writeup and submit my feedback.

Forgot I had set the technical preview to install before work and was extremely confused for a minute. And yeah, it's going to take a while to get used to the missing charms bar on my Surface Pro 2

Ok, so the good news after the proper video card drivers were installed with the Windows Update everything runs super smooth, even better than with 8.1 I think. I did some drawing in Mischief and it felt more responsive so that's a good thing.

Can anyone point me in the direction of podcasts that have talked about the windows 10 event?

This one is good.

Found out what it was. I needed 20GB free, which was a little tricky to get on my Pro 1.

Yeah that's the only one that I've found. Verge, pocket now, Engadget I mean everyone doesn't have anything up.

I just installed Win 10 on my Surface, I already sent my first feedback, I need quick access to brightness changing, I used it all the time on the charms bar so I miss it badly, other than that I am still checking things here. Does IE not launch on metro mode anymore am I right?

It's a Technical Preview OS and Cortana is linked to a test database and doesn't recognise a whole host of features, this is for testers, it's not a final OS.

How's Windows 10 in terms of overhauling old Vista-era icons? Is it all still Vista stuff, or have some icons been redesigned? Part of the reason I skipped Windows 8 is, strangely enough, how the old icons clashed with the new Metro interface.

They're slowly changing the icons with every update. I took some screenshots.

Anyways, i wish Cortana had the option to use google instead of Bing

So I installed it onto a VM, and I can't open the Start Menu at all... Pressing the button or the Windows key does nothing.

Does anyone know how to have a transparent taskbar/start menu similar to the official screens?
Apparently they've disabled transparency for now, but they said it's returning in a later build along with jump lists, resizable start menu etc.

You aren't using Synergy, are you? I find that it can cause issues when using it with virtual machines. I disable the service in task manager to solve my issues.

Anyone try gaming with it? I don't think there are AMD drivers out for my 7770

manually installed the inf for the last AMD drivers I installed on 8.1 and then installed CCC from the same folder too.

All in all, it's worked great. It's a real shame that AMD's installer doesn't like 10 though.

Ugh what have they done to the start menu.

9901 was perfect, you could unpin all the tiles and the menu would shrink into something Windows 2000 sized.

Now if you unpin all the tiles you still get a big window full of blank space :(

Yeah, it's pretty rough for touch yet.

You can enter full screen mode, but only works for a few apps, and for the apps that do, you have to reenter that mode everytime you switch to another app.

Also, swiping from top/bottom is not working for me, whether the app is running full screen or not, tablet mode or not also makes no difference. Swiping from up shows the app title bar, swiping from bottom makes the taskbar appear (which is even a useless gesture when the app is not full screen).

And there's now no touch friendly way of changing the volume or the screen brightness (or go to the desktop as you have said)

After the driver update windows is running much smoother on my surface, but it's getting really hot just by sitting there doing nothing.

Cortana is also behaving strangely when searching for apps. My first search for "feedback" didn't find anything. After explicitly looking for "Windows Feedback" the app started showing, even when trying with "feedback" again.

(Already submitted feedback on all those, and a few more :p)

I can't wait to see the changes they're going to make from this build on, because after spending half an hour with 9926 last night, I thought it was really, really ugly. The start menu, the start screen, the new desktop icons, the window buttons. Everything that was obvious and new was ugly. Which is weird, because I liked the on-going design changes from the previous build. How the hell did that happen. The performance also seemed worse in Hyper-V, but I haven't done any updates yet.

Have to agree with Studio about the removal of the charm bar being a bad thing on tablet. There's a few other things too that are a step bad for touch.

For mouse and keyboard the build is fantastic, for touch, not at all.

I just noticed some thing: W8/8.1 modern apps have the full screen button and the hamburger menu button on the title bar. Universal apps do not... Obviously not final, but it shows the direction Ms is heading... The charms will probably have to be integrated into the app interface itself, kinda like they did it for search in 8.1.

That gives them room to use swipe from bottom/up system gestures to make tablet usage better, but they also need to account for the old apps, right now it's terrible to access the Commands bar, or any other charm, with mouse or keyboard

Yeah, continuum must be a very early version, as all it does is open everything maximized by default... All the menus and interactions remains the same, which is quite cumbersome with touch.

Are they going to change the icons? I'm starting to like windows 10. Best feature so far for me is the fact I can skip songs by hovering my mouse over the spotify icon.

On the other hand, having the keyboard showing up on the desktop is really nice, as is the way we can manage desktop apps on screen with touch. Snapping them feels much better, and windows finally handles gracefully orientation changes.

Oh, and the new keyboard, with suggestions. So good to have such an wide list of options there.
