Been saving up for an SP4 since my SP2 got stolen, and now I've gone and bought an engagement ring this month. October is going to be an expensive one.

My hopes and dreams for the SP4...in order of preference

  • 12" design size stays. Would consider a 14" model but would expect it's too big for me
  • New CPUs (preferably the non core-M model, but happier to have the choice of both)
  • 4K display
  • At least as skinny as the SP3, if not skinnier
  • USB Type-C port
  • More Type cover colours available for all - none of this retailer exclusivity bullshit
  • 8 hours web browsing battery life
  • Windows Hello
  • Thinner bezel
  • Improved pen
  • Improved Type Cover keys with slightly larger trackpad size
  • 2xcameras with autofocus

The skylake core M sounds a decent step up from the broadwell one, so could be decent for a surface pro. Maybe if the 14" rumour is true, they'll use core M in the 12" to make it smaller and fanless, and go core i for the 14"?

Personally 14" would be too big for me. The 12" SP3 was great - literally the size of an A4 sheet of paper. 14" sounds like it'd be too much for the tablet mode, and more suited to a yoga type 360 laptop.

USB Type-C would be shit, since I would always have to carry a fucking adapter with me. Hope they stick with full-size USB ports.

I was hoping that wouldn't replace the full size port, but perhaps the mini-display port.

I've not read many definitive reviews for the new Core-M (except Anandtech), so it would be good to know the performance relation between a new Core-M and, for example, the older Core-i5 4300U in the SP3.

And I echo my fears on a 14" model. Would need to hold it first before buying to see if it's compromises tablet use on the sofa or in bed too much.

USB-C may happen, but full size connectors will remain due to legacy reasons. Enterprise has spent too much money fielding docks to piss off IT managers by using a completely new design.

The new Lumia and that Dell look like real devices I would use.

Too bad everything Microsoft I use nowadays is locked behind corporate decisions.

There's a rumor that Google will come on stage at Microsoft's event and announce Windows 10 apps. Wouldn't be surprised if these apps happen

That's entirely possible, but I wouldn't get my hopes up till they actually release the apps. They probably aren't in a hurry to get the apps out. And even then it's not guaranteed that they'll be high-quality native apps. Maybe they'll just wrap their websites.

High quality native apps from Google would be amazing. I love my Surface Pro 3, but the lack of native Google apps is noticeable.

I may hand my Surface Pro 3 down to my wife and pick up the SP4 if the leap forward is enough. The SP3 has been the best tech device that I have every owned, it really is integral to so many things I do these days.

The Surface Pro 4 hype so damn real right now...

The stage is pretty well set for them to knock it out of the park.

Here's hoping MS doesn't blow it.

ah yea, I guess MS wants tablet versions and I forgot this is also a phone event so if all those apps are on the phone would be an amazing pick up for MS.

This is why Microsoft sharing the kernel and making 'universal apps' was such a smart move. It's the last real chance of making Windows Phone a viable 3rd mobile OS.

The Windows 10 market is going to happen. It's inevitable, and Google wants to be there - both soon, and with high quality apps. Convincing them to go the universal route isn't really a stretch since the brunt of the work will be done for the PC side regardless.

That horse has long left the barn. Establishing a viable third mobile OS is out of the question. The best they can hope for is establishing Universal apps on the Desktop (over Win32 and in-browser web apps). That's already a tall task.

As long as no one uses apps on the desktop, Google does not want to be there. With Chrome they are actually competing with apps. They are perfectly happy with desktop users ignoring app, living within Chrome, opening every website via Google search, ...

Making any concessions to Microsoft is more about propping up Android OEMs (while waiting for Windows to die).

That'll be a pretty long wait, don't you think?

Of course Windows is going to stick around forever. But will it remain/become a viable platform for consumer software? There haven't been any notable new Win32 apps in years. Everything is happening on the web and in apps (on other platforms).

Windows' share in computing overall is declining (see graph). Most business users won't adopt apps and consumers haven't really taken to the app store, either.

It's not clear that any company would be well served by investing in a high-quality Windows app at this point. Why help establish a third platform, when you can just wait it out?

I don't think I'm leaving Android behind, but I've always wanted to play with a WP device and hope the pricing on the small screen one is aggressive. If it supports all the carriers I might convince my partner to get one as her phone is terribad.

I've had Android phones pretty much since the original Droid came out. I'm intrigued by the windows phones, as everyone I know who has ever had one loves it, but how nicely are they playing with Googles service especially these days? Maps, Gmail, and calendar in particular are essential for me. Any thoughts?

We will know tomorrow. It could get better...or it could stay as it is now, shitty.

I promised I was getting an SP4 day 1 and giving my SP3 to my girlfriend but I bought so much this month. Casper mattress, power rack, 300 dollar barbell fml. I might end up waiting unless it is amazing

And I don't think there's any way I'd ever want a 14 inch tablet. The 12 inch was perfect

For Google apps I prefer waze/here maps.
No idea about the other 2 though...

Pumped for the SP4 but not sure I'll have the money for it. They can get pretty expensive. Especially after Dollar -> Euro.

Oh well, if not now, maybe later. Hope it has some good upgrades over the last one.

100 million devices? LMAO are you including historical sales of phones with Windows going back to Windows Mobile or something? Where are you getting this 100 million devices number?

It's nothing because it has never turned MS a profit, it has no mindshare or marketshare and no hope for either, and quite frankly nobody wants it. It's a waste of money and there's a reason why MS shareholders were so angry during the Ballmer era when he would piss away money on anything and everything with little to no result.

As much as I dislike linking to wmpu:
http://wmpoweruser.com/microsoft-now-sold-100-million-windows-phones/

Maybe they're some bullshit numbers, but I don't think so. Sure you can say it's not apple or google numbers, but 8 million in a quarter is nothin to sneeze at. There are tangential benefits besides the initial sale as well, but I won't delve into it because you clearly just want to shit on it.

Cant wait. Maybe it is because I'm a Windows user but I much prefer MS hardware conference over anyone else. Also, Nokia phones have been seen as cheap but I bet MS is going to try and compete with Apple and Google and raise the prices to like $500-$600. Those phones will be nowhere close to $200 like you can find now.

Looking forward to this.
Presentation will determine if I buy a SP3 (i5 128 / 4GB) tomorrow, or wait it out for a SP4 (depending mid-tier).

Ultimately it's going to be a device for me to work digital art.

Hold on, friend! I'd love to share with you some swell news about the Windows 8 Metro UI! Wait, where are you going?

The band 2 renders look really neat. I love my band, but the build quality is a huge concern and the new design would probably alleviate a lot of that. I'd still wait a bit on it though.

...And then you wake up because proper Google apps in the Windows app store is a fairy tale.
I would be genuinely surprised. It's one of those things that are too good to be true because then the platform may actually stand a chance instead of drifting further away.

Maybe MS dangled the kernel patents for android in exchange for a hybrid google play/windows store implementation

That would be neat
