Why are Xbox replacement power cords needed?
The replacement power cords are designed to protect consumers and their Xbox consoles from rare electrical component failures that can pose a fire hazard.

How great is the risk?
Fewer than one in 10,000 consoles have experienced these component failures. In almost all instances, any damage caused by these failures was contained within the console itself or limited to the tip of the power cord at the back of the console.

Microsoft is providing new power cords at no charge to replace the cords that originally came with some Xbox consoles. You will need your Serial Number and Manufacture date to verify if your Xbox Console requires a replacement cord. This is located on the bottom of your console. If you have your Manufacture date and Serial Number and are ready to continue, please choose Place An Order below.

Because MS as a "company" is not losing that much money relative to the profit their Windows/Office cash cow continues to poor in.
 
Most Xbox owners will never even hear about this and for those that do, many won't even bother ordering a replacement since the chances of any damage caused by faulty wires are extremely minimal.
 
I remember when I worked at ComputerCity before they were owned by CompUSA. The mark up on any form of wiring was insane. As Employees we could buy anything for like 3 - 5 % of cost. You could buy almost any printer cable for like $.80 to $1.10 this isn't going to cost MS much.

this part doesn't look good, it sounds like they've been aware of this problem for quite awhile

So Microsoft had prior knowledge there was a problem and that's why they fixed it in their newest models? Why wait until now to replace the cords if they knew this in 2003 and designed the newer models "that the failures no longer occurred"? Some lawyer is going to have a heyday with that admission!!!
 
I ordered one as well. When I bought my Crystal Xbox (that was manufactured in August '04 :D) I sold my old Xbox to my little brother. He only uses it for DVD though.

Lol, sorry my bad. So the new cords are going to work better with a "faulty" Xbox, lol.

edit: But since the cord is the one to be changed, its a possibility that the cords werent up to MS specs. Of course MS should check their subcontractors work better if this is the case. But since the change was made to Xboxes...hmmm... whatever... =)

I spent a good 45 minutes trying to setup the perfect sequence, but WinUAE has problems recognizing my Xbox controller (analog only, refuses to see the digital d-pad) so I finally said to hell with it. :P
 
and that little 'register with microsoft' link doesn't hurt them either, you can get a passport id while you're getting your new non-defective xbox replacement power cord!
 
I hate how MS changed the connector part of the Xbox power cord so that only their make fits in. Any standard power cord you can buy for $2.00 at Radio Shack will work. I just used a pair of scissors to chop up the end so that it fit the Xbox.
 
I think I'm using the jug cord for my xbox, am I at risk ? I don't give a toss.

If MS could see the ammount of shonky wires pouring out of xbox they would have a fit. Bare wires running over the carpet like a spiders web of death.
 
for when a win 3.1, win 95, win 98, win 98se, win millenium, win 2K, win XP recall because they are not working and can cause heart attack in 1 case on 100?

It's simple arithmetic.

It's a story problem.

If a new car built by my company leaves Chicago traveling west at 60 miles per hour, and the rear differential locks up, and the car crashes and burns with everyone trapped inside, does my company initiate a recall?

You take the population of vehicles in the field (A) and multiply it by the probable rate of failure (B), then multiply the result by the average cost of an out of court settlement (C).

A times B times C equals X. This is what it will cost if we don't initiate a recall.

If X is greater than the cost of the recall, we recall the cars and no one gets hurt.

If X is less than the cost of the recall, then we don't recall.
 
Lol just they talked about the Recall on Fox News Chicago. They're gonna do a peice on it tonight or somethin.
