Microsoft should stop requiring Gold subs for FTP games ASAP + Crossplay Disaster!

Playing CoD Warzone these days, it was nice having to ask all my friends to download the game for free then fire their PS4s and start playing immediately.

It's crazy to me that on Xbox you are still required to have Gold subs to play such games? How come nobody talks about this? Also why force "Crossplay" on CoD Xbox players?

Disabling Crossplay on PS4 was the best thing we have done since the game launched, games were more balanced and more enjoyable.

Microsoft should do something about this.

Here is how you can turn off cross-play on Xbox One:

  1. Go to your Xbox settings
  2. Scroll to Account and click on Privacy and Online Safety
  3. Click on Xbox Live Privacy
  4. Click on View Details and Customise
  5. Click on Communications and Multiplayer
  6. Change "You can play with people outside of Xbox Live" to block.

Great that there is a workaround for this. On PS4 you can simply disable it from game options .

What about his issue with not accessing F2P games without a $60 Xbox Gold yearly subscription?

All three shouldn't charge to play online at all. I don't necessarily feel stronger about F2P vs other games. But maybe that's because I don't play any F2P games.

That's obviously BS, so why would I even try to address that? : )
It's not bullshit, just something that's been swept under the rug for some odd reason.

That practice is bullshit.

Calling Phil Spencer as we speak.

Say goodbye to your Xbox Live Account :)

Anyway, so how is the XSX? So much dissapointing insiders so I expect you to step up the game in here : P

MS should force devs to include the ability to disable crossplay in any game that has it, which I assume Sony does already given that the game has that option on PS4. Having to disable it globally isn't the best solution.

It really is terrible, good that Sony and Nintendo don't require it.

Regarding the CoD crossplay thing, my understanding was there was a standard option in-game to turn it off but that for Xbox specifically it was currently bugged and doesn't work. I don't know if that's an Acti issue, an MS issue or both.

You know this is the only thing stopping me from hooking up my Xbox to play Phantasy Star Online 2. It's free to play. Requires Xbox Live...

So just like with everything Xbox I own the Xbox One is currently in the closet with a backlog of exclusive games I really shouldn't have bought.

So doesn't everybody have ps plus or Xbox live anyway? I get that it's shitty practice to not let it be played for free but don't most people have the subscriptions anyway?

I still think microsoft has to get rid of XBL Gold as a whole.
with how much they closed the gap between Windows 10 and Xbox it is simply a joke that Windows 10 players can play online for free while Xbox players have to pay a fee, for playing the exact same game on the exact same servers using the exact same network.

XBL Gold has to go and I honestly could see Microsoft ditching it as soon as next gen hits. Gamepass could be their new money maker anyways

I bet you alot of people play Fornite without PlayStation Plus.

Allowing FTP games to be truly FTP just increases the amount of people that have access to the game. That in the end is better for the developers.

yeah, it's really something Microsoft has slept on IMO.
they were the first to charge for online play and back then there was nothing to compare XBL Gold to, then Sony came in and charged for playing online but not for f2p games, meanwhile Microsoft just kept their system as it was... and now even Nintendo jumped in, also keeping f2p games free to play online.

but as I said, IMO Microsoft has to get rid of XBL Gold for good, not just for f2p games. because it is literally a joke that you can play online for free on one of their systems, but not the other one... even tho you're playing the exact same game (let's say Sea of Thieves) on the exact same servers and network. both versions, the Win10 and the Xbox One version are basically the same piece of software and you get both versions if you buy either one of them... but if you play the game on Xbox One you also have to pay an additional fee to play the damn thing... with Win10 players that play for free.
they simply don't have an excuse anymore to keep it that way.
sure when their Console and PC business was as separated as it was during the 360 era that wasn't an issue, but now where Xbox is basically their console centric version of a Windows 10 computer, that's just a joke.

Multiplayer used to be free on PlayStation so it is possible.

But this is the main reason why they do this.

I don't think anyone really cares. Paying to play online for games you actually paid for is a much bigger punch in the nuts.

But that's the thing; right now the Gold is paying for Gamepass, and not the other way around.

But it is also true that this is short-sighted. They probably would get more money in the long run if they allow F2P games without Gold, and then just get a cut of the micro-transactions. That's how Sony does it.

MS is probably just uncertain about letting go of the money they are getting now, in order to get a possibly larger pot of money from F2P games.

Yeah, more people need to make this more public and voice a ver loud opinion, because I dont want Sony to follow them and make it so you need psn plus just to watch netflix. Seriously Microsoft that has to be an oversight and they just ASSUME everyone has gold. We need to make them very aware so they can change it once the new xbox drops.

I thought they did what Sony did and allowed certain games to be free to play without gold, this is the first time I am hearing about this.... not cool at all.

You can do this in the game settings on xbox as well, his method is a system-wide setting which affects all games.
For some unknown reasons you can't on Xbox.

Are you sure you want to disable crossplay?
Everybody does that... you need to try makes the play time awesome.

Weird because that how it is since 2005.

"consumer-friendly"

Also, the crossplay-issue is what you get when you mindlessly demand things.
Cross-platform play should only be allowed between consoles.
With some exceptions, like FF XIV.

asking for cross play isn't the issue it seems to be how it is (currently) implemented. Hopefully they will fix this issue.

Cross Play can only work if they are the same games. For example, in Overwatch the PC and Console versions are patched separately and have different metas, because the hero stats are litterally different. Automated turrets on Console are nerfed because players die to them too quickly. You can't have crossplay when the games are no longer the same.

I wonder how large of a role this may have played in the whole ps4 vs xbox one war.
And what it may mean in next gen. I mean for me I have have always seen value in gold even just for the free games, but for a casual gamer, it might just sway someone to deny, especially if they see the two machines as basically even.

While I agree that they should probably remove the Gold requirement for F2P games, I love how the OP is really concerned about an issue on a console that he with 99% certainty doesn't own.

I think, it may be the last legit criticism of Xbox, that Phil hasn't addressed publicly. Microsoft might eliminate the sub requirement for F2P for the SEX launch.

I do find it interesting that, all the interviews Phil does, nobody (to my knowledge) ever asks him why Xbox still has the requirement, while the competition doesn't.

Let me guess, you're the only person in the world, that gives opinions on things you possess only.

Not a chance. They would be losing an income for a gesture. I've been complaining a lot about MS' strategy to charge for f2p games and promote cross play. It's not a good will gesture, It's shady as fuck. it's trying to get money from the consumer (and therefore having a smaller population) while using crossplay to not affect the matchmaking experience.
