Microsoft Taunts Sony: 'Bring it On'

In the wake of its XO5 pre-launch hurrah. Microsoft is confident arch-rival Sony must be "upset and concerned". A senior director told Next Generation, "Now they have work to do."

Neil Thompson Xbox's senior regional director for Northern & Eastern Europe said, "It's up to them now. The ball is in their court. If I were Sony I'd be upset and concerned. They know they have to raise the bar."

He added, "They've seen the price, the hardware, the games, Xbox Live and the functionality. They know they've got a lot to do."

Sony's PlayStation 3 is due to launch in the spring, by which time Microsoft hopes to built up a big enough lead to hold off its rival, which has dominated the last two console cycles.

Analysts such as Piper Jaffray are confident that Microsoft has built up sufficient momentum for a successful launch, though many believe it's only a matter of time before Sony catches up. The power of PlayStation's brand and the machine's claimed technical superiority are cited as Sony's trump cards, although the company is hampered by its late arrival in the market, and, perhaps, by internal turmoil.

Teasing campaign

During XO5, Sony has been quiet, with none of the PR and marketing spoiling tactics that have entertained the media in the past. At XO1 in Cannes, for example, Sony bought much of the Croisette's advertising space, with a teasing ad campaign.

There are still some questions over Microsoft's actual launch line-up, with some suggestion that Microsoft does not want too many games available on day one.

Thompson said, "For publishers the launch is going to be a battle over revenues. The sheer quality of games available is going to make it a very tough fight."

On the specifics of the launch, he said, "We've committed to Project Gotham Racing 3, Kameo and Perfect Dark Zero. Electronic Arts has also been vital with its third party support." This includes five sports; Madden NFL 06, FIFA 06: Road to FIFA World Cup, NBA Live 06, Need for Speed Most Wanted and Tiger Woods PGA Tour 06.

However, he said that a further 7-to-12 games could be available at launch, depending on certification. "There are a lot of games going through that process," he said. "It's important to wait and see which games pass through." He added, "We will be in a position to announce the launch line-up at the beginning of November and I think that's the earliest any hardware company has announced its launch titles prior to release."

Strong pre-orders and largely positive coverage of XO5 have allowed Microsoft to brush away concerns about the two-tier pricing strategy, initially thought to be a confused and risky strategy. Thompson said, "We're offering retail all the help they need in order to give consumers the offer that they want. Retail understand the situation and so I don't see any confusion."

If I were Sony I'd be scared, crying, having a temper tantrum, pissing my pants, whining, sucking my thumb.....

EDIT

soiling myself, getting rotten stinkin drunk at some bar lamenting my fate... stumbling out the bar down the street...getting hit by a bus.. pissing my pants again....

The PS3 is going to wipe the floor with the 360. Who can seriously think otherwise? I'll buy a 360, sure, but if I had to choose between the two, it's the PS3.

its funny how MS thinks Sony would be scared of the 360

MS needs a reality check

we live in a video game world ruled by sonys Playstation fist!

Allard: I hope that Sony’s nervous right now, honestly, because the launch lineup looks great. They’ve shown two really good movies and a picture of a console that doesn’t have any ventilation holes in the cabinet. I mean, their list of claims vs. their list of proof, there’s a big gap to close between now and spring 06. So if I’m in Sony’s shoes I’m a little nervous now because our lineup looks great, our hardware’s the same, we got a kick ass online service that just got better, our media support is really really good, and we got the industrial design right. If I’m sitting in Mr. Kutaragi’s shoes I’ve got a lot of work to do between now and spring.

And the worldwide launch thing is another thing I’d be thinking about. Hopefully, that’s all goodness. Hopefully, it’s spurring the Sony team into saying, “We’ve got to get more serious about online. No more rhetoric. Let’s get serious about it.” God bless ‘em. If my GDC keynote contributed to Sony having better jewels on PlayStation so developers could focus more on games, god bless ‘em. That’s a good thing. If they’re embarrassed by their controller design as a result of having played with our wireless gamepad and they make a better controller, god bless ‘em. It’s good for the industry.

Seems to me like Microsoft is playing up false bravado. If they think all Sony's got is two good movies and an empty husk of a system then they're the ones that have some work to do. I'm waiting for the Xbox fans to jump all over these guys for doing what Sony's been doing for years (and getting bashed by said fans for doing).

Completely dismissing their competition out of hand (of course, Sony had a 50M console lead to back it up)

eh MS would be toast in the homeland and europe. Sony owns europe. The US however.........

At this rate MS should be more worried about a certain Kyoto house :lol :lol :lol

Way to show how much you know about your competition Allard.

Good lord are there enough logos across the side of that puppy? A few more generations of advancing multimedia technology and you'll need a whole side JUST to display all your cert logos! ;)

If MS has to worry about Nintendo, so does Sony. With such a unique product, there's no way Nintendo is going to cost MS sales in NA without also costing Sony sales in Japan.

When compared to the overall Revolution package, I think both of these companies have ugly systems.

MS' is generic. Sony's is just weird.

I don't doubt that M$ stands a greater chance of success this generation but I was M$ I wouldn't act so cocky after showcasing one turd after another. Good lord, the Xbox 360 line-up looks atrocious.

I did point out the same vent holes to Nintendo folks that insisted that there are no need for vent holes in the Rev with some super duper exotic cooling scheme, just like Sony must be doing with PS3 because none of the official PS3 shots showed the vents.

Having said that, with I still think PS3 design will go a huge change when it finally comes out since those vents shown are way too few to deal with all the heat dissipation that will go on inside the PS3. It's got even more transistors and faster chips than X360, but the vents are about only 33% of X360s. That's gonna be troble unless changed.

Basically, he is calling out the unrealistic design of the shown case IMO.

Have you seen the Blu Ray player Sony demoed at CEATEC?

Is a top curved dome Sony's new design cue?

I like how Allard takes pre-emptive credit for Sony's possible quality lineup. He really believes in his own speech, doesn't he?

"I invented the internet"

Didn't Moore or someone else pull a similar stunt just a while ago?

Moore's a whole different comedy show. He once said the Xbox lost appeal to casuals because it was black. And then we all know about his MGS4 damage control.

Im not quite familiar with his MGS4 damage control, please fill me in.

Allard is right though. Competition is great for the industry and if it pushes Sony to release better hardware, tools, controller, online, games, etc. then people should be thanking all console manufacturers for competing so hard and giving us the best products they can to win our $$$. I know Sony's asswhipping of MS/Nintendo last gen forced those two companies to try even harder this time around and them trying harder, in turn, pushes Sony to try harder as well.

I LOVE IT!

Here it is

"Gamers are a very smart bunch, and gamers who still haven't seen a PS3 or seen one played, will make the determination. The English expression is, the proof of the pudding is in the tasting. Having videos, having characters in videos... The fact that they feel the need to have Snake tell you that it's powerful, that could be seen as a sign of worry, or weakness, potentially," Moore concluded.

I dunno. I think Rev looks more generic than either of them. It's a 'good' and professional kind of generic, but still.

Sony will put out a console like they want, when they want and what Microsoft do will not change their plans.

I asked GAF about this very thing.

Although there were some discrepancies in personal taste, I think most agree that it's a great lineup.

Well, many say the Gamecube had the superior design.

Did it matter?

:lol what a dumbass. He knows that they have already lost :lol . He's a bit of a hypocrite though, when they unviel Halo 3 they will do exactly what Konami and Sony did with MGS4

The Cube's hardware WAS superior in terms of durability.

The handle and small size of it hurt the perception in many consumers' minds, however.

And no DVD playback.

I wonder what Kojima thinks about that? I seriously doubt that Kojima inserted that bit at Sony's behest. But, that comment seems to presuppose that Sony told (or asked) Kojima what to do. Probably not the smartest thing to do to call out Hideo and essentially label him a Sony shill or lackey.

It was a joke Pete.

You have to realize that, from Cybamerc's perpsective, just about ANY game seems to be atrocious so he's really saying that the X360 lineup is not actually any worse than any other launch lineup, at the very least.

while too human looks great i agree with this :lol

Raise the bar?

I thought that was exactly what was causing problems for Sony. They are trying to raise the bar beyond the reach of most companies (budget requirements == too high).

I think this will end up being quite a battle, though. MS is starting to come on strong.

I would like each company to succeed, however. I'll be going for all three systems anyways, so I'd like each one to receive as much support as possible.

ahhhhh, i can imagine the sweet sound of ps3 starting up. it's enough to have an orgasm you know.

btw, that guy can keep thinking his console is in the same league. there's a reason why it will cost more. and it aint cause of silicon.

Even if Otacon didn't say anything about the how powerful the CELL was there were subtle jokes about its power in the video. Like how when Snake blows smoke into MKII (which is powered by the CELL) and it causes Otacon to start coughing.

Hey Marc can you find any pictures of the vents the PS2 has/had? Obviously I'm at work so I can't compare... but that looks like a shitload more # of vents(which it should be).
