I know it's too soon but I would love for the new Mini to steal design and tech from Nokia; colorful polycarbonate unibody, qi charging, fast charging, improved screen, Nokia exclusive apps, etc.

So... What happened at the event?

It's on the 20th.

And Surface Pro 3 seems real: http://www.wpcentral.com/surface-pro-3-real-specs-and-pricing-revealed

Windows Phone Central has learned some of the details of this new series, including pricing, processors and storage size. In addition, there will be new Type covers, possibly to fit the larger device.

For the Surface Pro 3, which is now confirmed as being a real device, there will be five versions offered with varying pricing and configurations:
•i3-4GB RAM-64GB - $799
•i5-4GB RAM-128GB - $999
•i5-8GB RAM-256GB - $1299
•i7-8GB RAM-256GB - $1549
•i7-8GB RAM-512GB - $1949

As mentioned above, there will also be new Type covers, though it's not known what – if anything – is new about them.

Very interested, and in the market to buy a laptop/ultrabook, but the $250 upgradee from i5 to i7 is a bit ridiculous. The $400 upgrade for 256GB of SSD is also ludicrous. They are definitely taking a page out of the Apple playbook. Hopefully these SSDs are PCI-E instead of SATA.

Given the price they are asking, they better damn put a QHD or QHD+ screen (1440p or 1800p), because 1080p ain't going to cut it. Also, they need to improve stuff like WiFi (802.11ac, pls) and the camera (please, 1080p video and at least 5MP photos).

Also, weight has to be roughly the same as the SP2, given that the lightest 13" ultrabooks are about 2.5lbs, and the SP2 (10.6" screen) is about 2lbs (something like 2.0-2.1lbs would be acceptable).

I doubt any of this will be fulfilled. It's a shame because the Surface is still a great device (a few of my coworkers have it) and is still a good bang for the buck given that premium ultrabooks (which is what it is trying to replace) are more expensive.

I feel like the Surface Pro 2 barely launched and it seems a little too soon for new models already, but I guess it falls in line with their plans to get them ready for Back to School.

All in all I couldn't care less though. They need to leak the damn Mini, for Christ's sake.

Well the pro 2 wasn't much of an upgrade, so I can see them pushing out a thinner and lighter model.

An i3 128 GB version would be an insta-buy but I guess I'll just have to make do with the cheapest i5. I would prefer the screen size stay the same and that those 128 GB micro SD cards drop in price soon.

It also must be thinner.

If SP3 retains close to the current dimensions and weight while increasing screen size to 12" by removing the bezel, I'll be there day one.

Well who am I kidding, I'm going to buy it anyway, I need a new laptop.

larger pro is of no interest here, if they switch to 16:10 it would be cool though.

My only issue with the i3 is that it only has 64GB memory, and the OS will and does take a chunk of that.

Chances are they come preloaded with wimboot windows install. So you'll have most of you space to yourself but with maybe a bit worse performance in desktop, I don't think there are any performance comparisons as of now.

Art stuff is one of the main reason I want a bigger screen. My shitty PL500 is a better option to me atm. 10" is just a touch too small. Give me 12" minimum surface area and you've got a deal. Whether you do it by fucking off the massive bezel or otherwise isn't my concern. Just get it done.

If they can increase the screen size by reducing the bezel I'm all for it. I'm thinking I may have to suck it up and get the 8GB RAM and 256 GB SSD to future proof this a bit for me. i7 is over kill.

Excel + PowerPivot + PowerMap
And hold more than two browser tabs in memory (i'm looking at you safari)

Although in general there seems to be some contradictions here:

PS: It's become clear that some misinformation about Tuesday's event has been seeded in an attempt, I think, to find leakers. To try and combat these efforts, I've relied on multiple sources and have not published information when it's arrived. I appreciate and respect the Surface team's desire to tell their own story.

Sources tell me that Microsoft plans to launch a new Surface Pro model on Tuesday that is both bigger and thinner than the current Surface Pro 2. Beyond that, I don't have too many new details, but I'm wondering whether the new device is an additional model and not a replacement for Surface Pro 2.

...

I don't expect to see a 4:3 Windows tablet anytime soon, but as many have noted here in the comments, such a device would be wonderful and appreciated. It's unlikely that the new Surface Pro, which I'll call Surface Pro Book for now, is such a device.

So what's reasonable to expect?

We know Surface Pro Book will be powered by a current generation Intel Core "Haswell" processor, and that there will in fact be a range a processor choices. It's a Pro device, not a consumer device.

We know it will run "real" Windows 8.1, not Windows RT.

We know it will be bigger and thinner. But not how much bigger and how thin. It's not hard to imagine "squashing out" the current Surface Pro 2 so that it is both bigger and thinner but has the same overall battery capacity, and I am OK with that. But the size. I'm curious about the size.

The Yoga 2 Pro has a 13-inch screen, which again is semi-ideal in laptop mode but too big in tablet mode. My guess is that Surface Pro Book is not some new concoction but is rather something the Surface team has been working on since at least last year. So it's probably not all that radical from a design standpoint.

How big is too big? 13 inches. But what about 12 inches? 12.5 inches?

How about a device that maximizes the screen size within the body of the device and eschews a large bezel? You could easily fit a bigger screen in the existing Surface Pro 2 if you just gave up .25 to .5 inches on each bezel. Imagine how big the screen could be in a device that was just an inch bigger in each dimension.

I reckon we are looking at:

- Surface Mini
- New product line above the Pro

Announcing pro3 but not announcing rt3, does that mean they've given up on that form factor in favor of mini? maybe being arm isn't so bad at 7-8 inches.

So will this be the thread we use or will there be a new one made in the morning?

I'm ready plehboi

Awww yeah. I'll be all over this if the reveal is right - loving my SP1 (despite the Type cover 2 bugs) but Im a sucker for newer tech and could always do with some more grunt. Such great little machines.

I know people don't have a crystal ball but what should we expect in terms of the graphics performance on these things? I've been doing some (light) gaming on the SP1 and found it pretty suited to my needs, how would a SP3 stack up?

The best GPU that comes with haswell ULVs is Iris 5100 HD, I don't think that fits the current TDP of current Surface Pro1/Pro2 CPUs but now that it's bigger it's a possibility I guess still I think 5000 is far more likely. HD 5000 is in the current MacBook Air.
As for what kind of performance upgrade it is look here

I recently got a Dell Venue 8 Pro with 8.1 and I will never for the life of me understand how anyone can operate on RT alone. I don't think it should be so hard to offer 8.1 on less expensive units. Continuing to make it a Surface Pro only thing is a mistake.

Unless Microsoft is doing updates to their OS with it, 4:3 will exclude running two things side by side and keep one of their biggest features out of their flagship product.

Really hoping we see some upgrades in the gaming department, enough to run last-gen games at a stable frame rate.

1 hour to go..

Hope the Surface Mini is priced well.

Pro needs to be bigger which might make it thinner as a result.

Snapping always worked on 4:£ screens with a high enough resolution in 8.0.

8.1 allows for snapping on smaller resolutions. Can't remember specifics but it will work on 8" screens.
