Microsoft to hold Xbox & Windows 10 Media event Feb. 25th

MS just does this because they are losing and have no chance, it was the same with WP they start putting everything on Android and Iphone, see if Google got their apps into WP, of course not.

The only reason Google didn't put their apps on WP was because they were having a stupid feud with MS. That, and why bother doing something that could potentially strengthen a rival platform.

Plattforms need some kind of exclusivity to gain some steam, WP had neither, its the same story right now with Xbox,

If you think Android gained steam because of exclusive Google apps -- apps that aren't even exclusive anyway since you can find most of them on iOS -- then you're wrong. WP also did have exclusive MS Office apps for quite some time by the way. Something you'd think would be quite a big deal in the corporate world.

looks like MS cant do anything right these days, W8 and Vista was the same story...

MS are doing more right today than they have for quite some time, so I'm not sure what you're talking about here.

Xbox 360 was a different story because they had the sales and share, they didnt need to put those games on Pc they didnt even bothered when everyone was begging them to give us Halo 3 and Gears of War 2 etc... And suddenely they care? haha this is MS saying "hey we have lost the console space but we still can cover that with selling games on Pc."

Do you realise how different the company is today compared to how it was back then? I do agree with you somewhat that the position of the XB1 has obviously played some part of this, but if you've been following how Nadella has transformed the company since he's been in charge, and the sort of things that Spencer's been saying for nearly two years now, you'd know that this isn't just some sort of panic reaction by MS. Again, I'm sure the XB1's position has maybe forced their hand a little -- personally I didn't think the Win 10/Xbox crossover would happen to this degree until next gen -- but don't let the decisions a company made nearly a decade ago influence what you think of their decision today. As hard as that might be for certain people.

I'm wondering if it is possible that microsoft is working on getting the Xbox to play windows 10 games.

Xbox already is running Windows 10 and uses Windows 10 apps (Edge). You will see an influx of more apps after they open the store to 3rd party developers. Those developers can make games (albeit not Xbox Live unless they go through ID@Xbox) and you can play it on your Xbox One. The //build/ conference this year (starts March 31st) will deep dive into those talks so you should pay attention to that.

It'll soon to be able to run any Windows 10 app (and any game that's written as an app) once MS unlock that functionality. They promised that back in their Build conference last year. The rumour is that they'll finally make good on that promise at the Build conference this year in March. We'll have to wait and see.

Edit: I was beaten by Zedox, but I'll just leave this post here.

Fallout 4 modding support comes to PC (I mean, the 'official' Steam Workshop version) and Xbox One first. So maybe we'll see that.

I think this event will not please Xbox Fans who invested 500e to play exclusives and see everything going into Pc.

As far as im concerned, i love this, it just saved me what 600 euros? i dont need to buy a Xbox anymore as the best choice right now with a Ps4 is to build a decent Pc that will run games better than Xbox and im all set so yeah thanks Microsoft :P

I don't get it, why the need to come crap in the thread like this? I think it's pretty obvious you weren't going to get an Xbox before this but if it gets you more excited about PC gaming more power to you!

What an absolutely horrible post lol.

WP is a terrible comparison. WP failed because it was 3 years late to the market.

You also seem to dismiss the cost of entry in terms of console vs PC.

I'm stoked for this event.

Someone want to make a hype train? Please.... I got two cheeseburgers.

I don't think there's going to be a lot in the way of new games. I believe this is more of a press event to show off all the games they've announced that are coming to the Windows 10 platform, starting to reinforce the whole idea that Windows 10 and Xbox are one.

Why would anyone be hyped for Xbox now, all it's games are on PC, no point of buying it anymore.
:P

I'm a MS fan, so it's win win for me.

I have to think MS will increase the value proposition for their platforms somehow, hence the hype.

Yes, I'm in the same boat.
I wish they would revamp the Gold subscription now that PC is in play and they're obviously not going to charge anything there. Maybe add some other incentives on XBO, offer better monthly games?

This post is so bad I don't know where to start.

The Xbox and Win10 gaming move is more akin to putting apps from the Windows phone on Surface than it is putting them on a competing platform.

The idea that everyone has gaming rigs and now has no need for a console like Xbox is just delusional. The people with the choice of PC or keeping an Xbox are very few. The idea that there are a lot of people that now can just sell their Xbox and play on PC is ridiculous. The overlap is overestimated I think. They have more to gain than lose.

You: Screw you Microsoft I had no desire to buy your hardware and now I'm gonna stick it to you and buy the great games you release on my Windows 10 PC!

MS: No problem thanks for the purchase.

Windows Phone sales didn't go up when Microsoft went full iOS/Android mode.
In fact after Satya Nadella took over there has been nothing but bad news regarding Windows Phone.

Guys. I got a bad feeling this is where they introduce the successor to GFWL for Windows 10 and the Microsoft Store. And overview the new integration between PC and Xbox Live. Thing is, with all these DirectX 12 games, it's not really much of a choice this time. Oh well...

It was fun while it lasted, Steam.

Xbox MAUs here I come.

Xbox doesn't even get its own event any more :'(
Nutella to present Microsoft's E3 2016.

This would be one of the bigger things for me, if they did it of course. MS seem to be shifting loads of games towards Windows 10 PC's but you don't see as many being announced for Xbox One also.

The dream is to be able to buy the Xbox One version and get the PC version. Or buy the PC and get the Xbox One version also.
What?
For your second point, full cross-buy support should/will happen when the Universal Store kicks off. Similar to Apple's App Store cross-buy for iPhone/iPad, it's all done by account licenses.

Everything was PC/Xbox simultaneous release.

Surprise BINGO: Windows 10 games will play on Xbox as long as the minimum specs meet the requirement.

People keep acting like Xbox is hurt by this. Their mentality is that Xbox is not just a console anymore but a platform among Windows devices. It's a good move its just that many gamers don't like or understand changes like this.

Yip. Satya is trying to do everything he can to spin Xbox sales in a positive light. Nothing to do with improving the mindshare of W10 and it's ecosystem, nothing at all ...

Your last paragraph makes me laugh as well :)

I was optimistic about Microsoft's commitment to PC gaming about a decade ago. For a long time now it's been on them to prove they actually mean anything when they talk about PC gaming.

They have made a small number of half-hearted moves towards PC gaming recently, but until they announce some PC games that aren't F2P or rereleases of old titles, it's hard for me to care a great deal.

Lewie, I don't quite get how you haven't worked out the pattern to MS's PC releases, this isn't the first time you've claimed it's confusing. If the dev has made a PC version before, then it gets a PC release, if they haven't then it doesn't - boom, that's the formula.

That's why you get Alan Wake from Remedy and Dead Rising 3 from Capcom Vancouver, but not Sunset Overdrive from Insomniac or Halo from 343.

Although that seems to have changed with the announcement yesterday, which implies everything is coming to PC day and date in future.

Is this one of those "MS shot themselves in the foot" type posts?

To me it seems that the people who are mad about this are the same people who are mad when price drops happen for consoles and they bought the initial one for more money. LOL.

My half-realistic prediction:

- from now on, every Xbox exclusive is also coming to Windows 10
- Xbox One receives possibility to Stream games from a W10 PC like Steam Link
- They announce a Xbox One Mini, no possibility to play games natively, has only streaming option and runs apps like netflix. Pricepoint: $100.
- They announce a line of Xbox branded PCs that run W10 games at the recommended level. (Think GTX970 etc)
--> Giving more choices to play Xbox Games. They still commit to the dedicated console business.

I'd love this option.

UPDATE: I got news from a birdy in the sky with some information on how the event will play out. I've edited the first page with this information. Please don't ask where I got this information from as I can't disclose that.

- Open house format from 9:00 a.m. – 6:00 p.m. Stay and play all day, or drop in/out as your schedule allows
- Phil Spencer will open the event with a welcome address – please arrive promptly
- Hands-on with new content from Quantum Break, Forza Motorsport 6, Gears of War: Ultimate Edition for Windows 10, Minecraft, Killer Instinct: Season 3, Ori and the Blind Forest: Definitive Edition, Below, Pit People, Dark Souls III, Tom Clancy’s The Division and more
- Developer talks and platform experiences offered every 30 minutes
- Developers and Microsoft Studios spokespeople available for interview
- Direct gameplay capture permitted for several experiences; recording equipment provided
- Video assets and art provided

There's gotta be some surprises in there somewhere, right? ...Right??
New game announcement, perhaps. And I would love to see more of Sea of Thieves.

Rumors are that this will be Microsoft's first, consumer-driven push into PC gaming in over a decade. Or at least, that's how they want it reported in media and in PC gaming circles.

I like a lot of what you are suggesting, and I think given the advance buzz that some of what you say may pan out.
But the reality is none of this matters if they don't address the glaring weaknesses of the current Windows 10 / Xbox app.

* there is now - essentially - zero modding support, as Microsoft re-encrypts the files after installation.
* there are serious issues with attempts at the platform overlay.
* a complete unwillingness to co-mingle with other DRMs. can't use Steam to launch games, etc.

This reeks as more of the same from Microsoft. The platform's launch of Rise of the Tomb Raider was not well received. This conference needs to inspire confidence that these issues are to be addressed very soon - and that Microsoft actually understands what PC gamers want.

Theres no indication of that, the OP is pretty clear its an event to show off their Spring releases

This isn't a conference, theres no press briefing that they have said so far and it seems a bit late to go and announce one. Perhaps one of their GDC talks will yield more information on this, or maybe even Build, but this event is highly unlikely to do that and they havent positioned that way either so far.

Hmm, so is this like a pre E3 show? Interesting, I'm not expecting much though. Would this mean no gamescom then?

At most I see this a highlight of their spring release games and talking about XBO/W10 convergence with cross-buy. That's the most we'll get out of the event in my opinion.

I think Gamescom is usually August time.

I am sure they have content for the Win 10 event, E3 and everything else after. The Win 10 event will be way more than just a games showcase.

Xbox next is definitely going to be a pure service. The ecosystem will likely be cloud first and foremost, then local streaming from a more powerful PC like the steam link, then local on devices running Windows 11. Valve has had it right for some time now, they just don't have the market share or directed resources to implement it.
