Microsoft to skip Tokyo Game Show 2015

I swear I remember hearing that alot of the games we did not see at E3 were planning to be shown at TGS this year?

That would make the independent show make more sense no?

Just to clarify some things:
Gamescom is mostly a consumer event (E3 is mostly media and retail) and Sony will be there with twice as much showfloor space as Microsoft. They just aren't doing a big press conference there this year, their European briefing will be at Paris Games Week in October.

Man thats kinda weird they are going to skip out on this years show when its being said its the largest TGS ever.

Regardless of how its doing in Japan, that marketing push of just being there is far more positive than not being at the show floor at all.

Biggest TGS show but they have no games so what are they going to do? Make a huge booth with 500 stations of Scalebound?

..Sony isn't? Why the fuck not?

Sony will have their full booth there like every year. So there will be more hands on with games and possibly questions on the show floor. They are just not doing a live press conference because it was only 6 weeks after E3.

They will have 3 live conferences all to themselves now. PGS, TGS, PSX.

Two Japanese games aren't enough when the PS4 gets 10-15 Japanese third party exclusives every year. At this point, when someone is a fan of Japanese games he or she will just buy a PS4, the market for Japanese games outside of Japan has been decided two decades ago, I don't think porting two Japanese games is gonna make a difference.

If they publish Japanese games themselves, the number of Japanese games they get will be equal to the number they publish. They might even be able to turn a profit on publishing them overseas, though it's not hugely likely.

If they continue with their current strategy, the number of Japanese games they get will instead be zero. The "foothold in Japan" strategy has never worked, even with a more popular console and high-profile exclusives, in a market environment where Japan was far more open to console gaming. To continue it instead of simply taking charge of international publishing is moronic.

Edit: If it's not clear here, I'm referring to JRPGs, rhythm games, and other "niche" Japanese games, rather than the handful of AAA Japanese titles that still get released. Though, I suppose as of SF5, even AAA Japanese games aren't guaranteed for X-Box if they don't step in to assist with publishing.

Of course not! It was packed to the rafters!

Ooh my!

I asked Phil Spencer about not attending to TGS and Japanese 3rd party support.

@XboxP3: Being at TGS and getting support from Japanese pubs aren't really related. TGS is just a resource/time tradeoff, not easy decision.

If Final Fantasy bombs on Xbox One in North America, niche Japanese games certainly won't sell in continental Europe, last gen MS tried everything they could to be competitive in Europe including FIFA marketing & exclusive content, & the PS3 was far more expensive & it took four years for Gran Turismo to show up on the system, & that was when X360 was getting Japanese support in the first half of the gen.

If X360 failed taking into account everything I mentioned above, XB1 certainly won't reverse that. They need far more than PS4 ports of Japanese games, games that won't sell on the system anyway since the audience for Japanese games collectively decided that they'll buy those games on Playstation. They need exclusive GTA, FIFA, or Gran Turismo on their system to actually make a dent.

Even if they got the above 3 games exclusively, the best they'll do is sell considerably worse than PS4 instead of getting completely decimated, if you live outside of NA/UK you'd understand why, casuals buy Playstation in those regions because they associate that with gaming, if MS moneyhats FIFA people will just buy PES.

update to current state of japan

I liked TGS 2014, and TGS 2015 could have some really cool stuff:

  • Persona 5
  • The Last Guardian
  • Final Fantasy XV
  • Star Ocean 5
  • Danganronpa 3
  • Dragon Quest Builders
  • Dark Souls III
  • CyberConnect2 stuff
  • The Sega console game that was teased
  • Gravity Rush 2 (?)
  • Dragon Quest XI (?)
  • Ace Attorney 6 (?)
And none of those are mobile. It could be a really cool show; people need to stop always focusing on the negatives when it comes to the games that could be shown there.

Japan as a territory is fast becoming irrelevant in terms of home consoles, so there's no reason MS should waste money trying to appeal to them.

It's a totally different market than when Microsoft first launched the original XBox. The 360 showed they can thrive and succeed without Japan.

As long as they stay competitive, the Japanese third-parties will still come to them, because they'll need to reach the Western gamers if they want to still make console games (for the most part).

Wat. Have you compared the announced japnese games on ps4 to the ones on the xbone? The japanese games consumers are on ps4 not xbone in the west.

And yet, the recurring narrative I hear regurgitated all over the internet is that "Sony isn't showing up at Gamescom because they've got nothing".

Please add NieR New Project

It will have more information in fall.

I guess it will be shown on TGS.

Edit: Maybe Bloodborne DLC will be shown.

Edit 2: Maybe we can hear LEVEL5's new title.

Edit 3: Also new Disaster Report

Level 5 game
Nier faoifnjaodiwpoi39w
Tales of Berseria
Final Fantasy 7 info is going to TGS as well(which also coincides with CC2 most likely)

Sony is killing it in regards to Japanese exclusives, at this point, its far beyond what MS managed to secure with money alone at the beginning of last gen

Mattrick nearly killed the Xbox brand entirely. It's a miracle that they're only losing out 2:1 to PS4.
Based Phil Spencer

I guess this begs the question, but where does the Xbox brand go on out from here? The recent job cuts in the hardware division don't bode well.

If I were in Sataya Nadella's shoes, I'd just take who's left in the hardware division and go all hands on deck for a fourth-gen Xbox. Learn from your mistakes, do a full-on postmortem on what Sony's doing right with the PS4, learn from there, and take it from there. No compromises. No surrender.

Maybe change the name, if the Xbox brand is beyond repair at this point.

Accelerate the release schedule, put it at fall 2017 for now and move it up or down depending on what the Nintendo NX looks like.

What say you guys? Can anything be done?

I guess you weren't around when the PS3 launched. You must have been in you second job right? /s :D

They don't need to change the name or anything. They have had a terrible launch and lots of bad pr. They are on the right direction now.

When it comes to Japan, its a losing battle no matter what.

I just wonder if it's too little, too late, before the investors force Nadella's hand...
