Middle-earth: Shadow of Mordor |OT| One Title to rule them all

Are any of the alternate skins for Talion associated with pre-orders available for download if you're a season pass owner at the moment?

Aah man.. As a huge lotr fan this dissapoints me :(

Meh, I never take neogaf opinions on game stories too seriously; I enjoy the story so far. My favorite are the artifacts that you find in the game, they all play memory voice overs that really add a lot of depth to the story. But a lot of people hate those types of story delivery systems in games, I never minded.

I had to turn it off when he started talking about how the combat was just one big quicktime event.

"Yes, combat is just a big quicktime event as long as you ignore all of the special moves and everything that proves me wrong."

The guy comes off as elitist and not wanting to like something everyone else does.

If you've finished any of the following games:

1. Battletoads
2. Ghost 'n Goblins
3. Ghouls 'n Ghosts
4. Super Ghouls 'n Ghosts
5. Ninja Gaiden (*Xbox)
6. Devil May Cry 1,3,4
7. Arkham Asylum
8. Arkham City
9. The Witcher 2 - especially in 2011 prior to the patch that coincided with the 360 release later on.
10. Bayonetta
11. Vanquish
12. Metal Gear Rising (I'm assuming, but I never actually played that far into it)
13. Demon's Souls
14. Dark Souls
15. Dark Souls 2
16. God of War 1,2,3 - above normal difficulties.
17. Darksiders 1&2
18. Lords of Shadow 1&2

You wouldn't really find much challenge in this game.

I wouldn't even really consider the Arkham games challenging even on he hardest setting. I only ever died when I got cocky and did something stupid, then got The Bat shot right in the face and watched him die.

Have yet to play Lords of Shadow 2, working on my Paladin run on LoS 1 after a break, but honestly the hardest part of that whole game was the damn DLC final boss. That bastard can kick the fattest rock he can find.

Does this game not have a difficulty setting? I don't know if I ever found it.

I'm a masochist with games though. Go hard or go home.

But I do hope that this game sells enough to get us a sequel or "spiritual" successor and that improve on everything from this game and add more things because it is a damn fun and great game so far.

I am really having trouble grasping the whole branding and setup of the rank levels and stuff. I am trying to do the achievement for branding 5 bodyguards and turning them against the chief. I have just been going around branding random captains I found, I have about 4 so far...How do I turn them into body guards for a captain. I think the blue lines in the menu connecting some captains to a certain warchief mean they are its bodyguard? Can I switch them over to a different warchief or do I have to go find captains that are not bodyguards? How do I move them up through the ranks?

Turned it off after 2 minutes as he tries to dismiss all the other combat buttons he needs, in a fight against 3 lowly grunts no less. What a joke.

I found it funny that he couldn't even prove his point against 3 lowly grunts.

What a joker.

Why would it? It's some random streamer who's not any different from anybody discussing the game in this thread. He comes off elitest as all hell with that opening line "I play games at a higher level". Give me a break.

Like almost every melee-combat focused game, Shadow of Mordor absolutely does not shine when you're only facing 2-3 generic enemies. When you're taking on a dozen of them with some spear-throwers and berserkers and captain or two who are immune to your basic abilities, that's when it gets interesting. The game makes you take advantage of every tool it provides and in a number of scenarios it requires you get a bit creative with how you approach killing captains or a warchief.

He gets basic stuff wrong - the combat does get tougher at the end, and his description of the '4' enemies types is laughably off-key. No mention of the stun dudes, or immunity to certain attacks that Captains have. Or the other non-Orc foes.

Also, him admitting to never having played the Arkham games or Assassin's series is sort of not something to brag about if you're reviewing games...? Like, I'd trust you more if you understood the wider context of games being made right now. I mean yeah, that doesn't stop the combat from being derivative but the Arkham games had a tonne of depth. True, the main story never forced you to learn it, only the challenge rooms did, but I'd argue that some of the tougher enemies in Mordor act in a similar war. No way you'll defeat certain Warchiefs playing like that.

Ran into a wall when one of the initial warchiefs had nearly every possible Strength (no finishers, can't jump him, poisons on attack, heals from his own attacks, rapid fire, 1-shot me with arrows, etc), with his only Weakness being fear of fire (with no fire anywhere in the stronghold). I attempted (and failed) three times before I decided to just wraith stun spam with incomplete flurries to take him down. Took about 5 minutes for the least satisfying kill ever.

Hoping that was just a fluke!

I don't... what? How did that idea get to the point of being shot? Yikes.

There was a thought in the production that there would be a big backlash and letdown from the audience when your main antagonist or the big bad that everyone is trying to defeat and stop is only a giant floating red eye that doesn't physically do anything for three movies.

So that scene was a possible solution shot but ultimately changed in the editing room.

I guess I've been lucky in that I've yet to come across an orc who was immune to everything. Granted I'm now in the middle of the post-campaign completion journey of finishing up everything else, so there's time. Sounds like a nightmare o_O

Especially when the dude goes out of his way to have as little fun with it as possible. Sure, you CAN stand still and cycle attack/block/dodge forever until everything is dead or you can actually use all the cool abilities you have and have fun.

It's funny that you say this after the condescending remark you left in your previous post as though YOU died a lot because of the odds you faced.
BTW, scaling up a wall is a resource too and the point is knowing when to back off instead of biting off more than you can chew.

It was condescending as a response to your "Well, this game is much too easy for a gamer of my caliber" post. And yeah, it is easier if you run, but as I stated before, I don't find it as fun, which is why the game is proving more challenging for me. And I'm loving every minute of it.

Some people play on easy, others on hard. Some credit-feed through arcade games, others enjoy the challenge of beating it on a single credit. To each his own.

He sounds a bit jaded but he makes a lot of valid points. When your game is 80% combat, you better have more variety, particularly when 3 Batman games have already been released. It worked in the Arkham games because it was new at the time and the combat situations were only something like half of the game.

i dont know if its valid though. i watched the giantbomb quicklook and there was some really crazy stuff going on (a warchief and 6 captains showing up with like 40 or so orcs).

Im not enjoying this game at all, I dont get where all the reviews are coming from, is by far the most repetitive game i've played this gen.

Finished it yesterday, and i am all on board for a sequel. Also, END GAME SPOILERS
I am disappointed that the game didn't venture north Mordor. I wanted Mount Doom in the background and Barad-dur for the taking. Maybe next game!

How is the environment variation in this game?

All of the screenshots, videos and streams that I have seen look the same. Desolate mountains and a few places with some bushes. Everything looks bleak and ugly.

I know this is supposed to take place in Mordor, but still, is the whole game like this?

You see everything the world has to offer visually within the first 10 minutes. If that's a problem, then don't bother with this.

got branding. its fucking rad.

how do you brand captains though? Tried combat branding... didn't work. Do i need to get them lower in hp?

Question:

So I want to restart this sword side mission, can you tell me if dying will give me the option to retry like a story mission or end up a consequential death like in free roam?

EDIT; Answered my own question by dying and fucking everything up.

Did you play through the story mission yet where you brand a guy. I tried before I did that mission and couldn't either.

he is a starcraft 2 pro gamer and commentator. he did not win a lot but he was one of the first players to use infestors very effectively like 2 years ago.

that explains a lot to be honest, no wonder his opinions are so "off" in the context of the type of game this is trying to be.

Mission
19 was kind of disappointing. I was hoping for a fight after the sneaking but I guess you could say that the devs at least tried to mix things up a little with the power struggle at the end.
Can't wait to go back tomorrow and play the rest of the game!

LOL

Get ready for that final mission. After 19, it'll blow you away.

Question about after the end of the game, I still haven't bought the game yet but
can you keep doing nemesis stuff after you beat the story? Like a free roam mode?

Oh boy. First week everyone is loving this game. Second week everyone hates it. What's the deal brahs

Well, the complainers can always play the new Assassin's Creed Unity game or Dragon Age Inquisition and see if they like those repetitious and easy combat games..

branded 5 uruks that are connected to a warchief in the menu(I THINK this means bodyguard)...I went to fight the warchief and he only has one bodyguard. What did I do wrong?

i kinda question that a pro gamer actually has the time to play any other game then the game he professionally plays but then again he isnt really that high ranked.

I'm pretty much going to have to disagree with everything he said. The freeflow combat system isn't meant to be super intricate. It is meant to be accessible right from the start and make any player feel powerful. Then have depth for those who want to really get into it and see how high they can combo and how many different abilities and moves they and perform during one combo. Want the combat to be harder? Turn off all prompts.

wow..after collecting every rune, you can actually start getting multiples of whichever runes you want..making yourself even more overpowered..yet another reason for me to get this game ASAP :D

You probably started the Initiation quests but didn't complete them so they weren't bodyguards.

If you go to the details of a warchief it will show the number of body guards he has

started playing the lotr soundtrack over this game (and set in-game music to 0). and the timing was once in a lifetime but this cue played right when a warchief made his entrance

i was like

when that moment struck.

lol branding captains is fun. Is there any way to make murders not just 'executions' all the time? Is it to do with power levels or is it random?

i've accidentally killed my captain by swinging wildly by accident more than once >.<"
