Middle-earth: Shadow of Mordor |OT| One Title to rule them all

Ok I need serious help with this game I feel like I am missing something. I've died a metric crap ton (yes I know I suck) I just don't know what I am meant to do next? I've tried to kill Elites and Warchiefs with no luck, many of them are now level 14 or so. When i do finally kill a few captains I die again and everyone moves up a rank and new Captains emerge. I basically feel like I've been going around in circles for hours. :-(

I've gotten most of the upgrades from Tier 1 and 2 should I be able to take on Warchiefs at this point? Should I start the game again because my enemies are now all too powerful?

I just sat back and watched two of my branded captains bully a warchief, wondering who would deliver the killing blow and take his place. A spear thrower named Dush was the lucky Uruk.

I am very serious. This game knows how to get to my heart and quickly.

Nah, don't start over. You'll get some nice runes from those guys when you do take them down. Work on lesser captains, side missions and upgrades to get you better equipped. Focus on their weaknesses. They aren't impossible, just more of a challenge.

No, keep going and do some story missions. Those unlock the powers that are incredibly useful. Keep doing those red missions too, if you notice you are not powerful enough, just run away. No shame in that.

Also do the side missions in white (Sword, bow and dagger training) they help you to learn new techniques and tactics.

And do exploit their weaknesses. Interrogate a worm if you need to.

Try to do some of the side content (the weapon challenges, even picking flowers or hunting) for some exp, power, and mithril (whatever that "M" is) for some of the upgrades such as the 2x critical hit or executions at 5x. I know you mention that you have the T1 and T2 upgrades but I'm just not sure I remember exactly which those are. But those are some specific upgrades that should make melee fights a lot easier. Make sure you abuse enemy fears, it makes Captains a TON easier to deal with. If they are scared of caragors, definitely make sure to try to find that hanging piece of meat and knock it down. Hell, this is a helpful thing to do absolutely anywhere. Fire? Find the nearest campfire beforehand. When a captain gets scared and runs off, not only does this take them away from the safety of their fort and allies, it also means they spend a lot less time swinging/shooting at you. Also, if a captain happens to be weak to stealth finishers, then that's a free kill (or later, brand). Also Orcs seem to have a hard time looking up. Lots of times if I have too many orcs around I just needed to elevate myself and be patient and wait a bit for things to calm down. Most of them are also not very fast so being able to run out of the place and find an herb for a quick HP refill is always an option. The orcs tend to spawn quickly like in Far Cry 2 (if you're familiar) but unlike that game, they will stop chasing you pretty damn quickly in most cases.

Ah ok I'll try those tips thanks. Ah dumb question how do I tell which missions will progress the story?

Yellow icons are story missions (that progress the game)

I just started this yesterday and my only complaint is that every time I am about to take out another captain my damn super arch enemy seems to spawn right next to the captain when I am about to jump him... bloody pisses me off.

Some runes really break the game. Such as slotting so that you fill your health back to full for every drain/brand. The other epic rune that gives you arrows back for every wraith teleport kill making it so you can perma-teleport kill. Even with one, you can get 5 wraith teleport kills, then with your x5, brand a couple enemies which tops your arrow back off then start your wraith teleport chain up again.

Yellow markers ok. I noticed most of my yellow markers are the Warchiefs but there is a Gollum one there that I'll look at trying. Thanks heaps for the tips guys and gals. Going to persist with this some more using your advice.

how can i kill an enemy with combat mastery(? i think thats what it said) but i couldn attack him head on, dodge and attack... nothing

You can attack them straight up. Don't make sure not to use executions, ground attacks or finish the flurry attack. So you can stun, flurry attack shortly, stop mid flurry, and then stun again.

Anyone else greatly disappointed by how lacking this game is visually? It's essentially two large fields with some ruins dotted around, with nothing to explore or sight-see. Such incredibly bland world design.

The visuals are not drool-worthy or anything, but I think it can look quite pleasant at times. It has pretty clean IQ for the most part as well.

Yeah you'll have to take care of those war chiefs after all the Gollum stuff to unlock more story missions. But I'd save them for last in your case.

Also, are you using the environments to your advantage?

• Shoot fires
* shoot breakable walls
• shoot explosives
• shoot hanging meat

and most importantly

• release those tigers from their cages!

Finished the game last night. I really enjoyed it. Loved the combat, and thought more so than anything else it was just fun. However,
I think the game ended rather abruptly. The ending was pretty anti-climatic and posed just as many questions as it answered. I guess it sets up nicely for a sequel.

Common dude really he is playing the game with his chin, and spamming left click and f, inside the stronghold!!! AGAINST commander he is invulnerable jumping like a retard, stop defending the game watch the second video he makes https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6AV9W2ZdmjU

I have to agree, about halfway through the game I stopped dying almost entirely. It seemed fine before you start getting a bunch of helper abilities.

The biggest problems I think are:

The roll-over-dodge move is way overpowered (as you can see from the video). I started rolling my way off and running off to grab a healing item and coming back. It's like if the roll in Dark Souls made you invulnerable the whole roll - it would break the game.

Even the captains that seem to have few vulnerabilities are still vulnerable to the stun-from-behind-and-flurry-move. I started spamming that to kill them without having to look at their weaknesses.

Fix those two things and I think it'd be a lot better.

I had a lot of fun until about halfway through, it's gotten way too easy now (but I do like my games difficult). The addition of the berserkers doesn't offset how overpowered the abilities make you.

Anyone else finding themselves needing to do the Spirit of Mordor mission twice? The one where you first meet ratbag?

Is it a criticism to be overpowered in this game? I don't think so. I'm not expecting a Souls game here. Did these same people not like Dishonored, either? Cause you get overpowered after half-way and it's more of a badass simulator.

Yeah, you do get overpowered a bit, but by that time you should be more of a string-puller rather than the foot soldier. Manipulating the orc army to have them do your work instead of fighting straight through the whole thing.

I was in your shoes yesterday.

Unlock the stun ability when you vault over an enemy. Also unlock the ability where your execution only takes 5 hits instead of 8. Do story missions until you unlock the ability to make that shockwave around you which is great for crowd control.

Just finished the game. It seems to me the campaign is really short if I decided to ignore the side quest stuff. There's just not enough quests that's relevant to the story

The showdown in the end was pretty lacking. It's just a meh campaign and its not really that great. Should there be a sequel, Monolith should improve on that area and make the combat more unique and more dismemberments please. Not just head decapitation

Had a lot of fun in the second map slaying orcs though I wont complete the game as I really dislike the story missions. Nothing more frustrating than stealth missions with instant failure and dull escort missions. The one I'm currently on is teaching me how to use mounts even though it was like the first perk I unlocked.

When you kill a certain number of captains, does it automatically replace them even if you don't die? Killed 2 Warchiefs, and all but about 4 captains, next thing I know, my Nemesis system is full of blank captains

Loving the game, though I wish it was harder

Yup, the ranks will fill up over time. If you don't want to wait, you can go to your map, hover over one of the towers and select to forward time.

If I kill a warchief instead of branding him how do I get my branded captain to become a warchief and take that spot?

You can't. You have to instigate a betrayal between branded captain and his war chief. If the war chief is dead and his place isn't filled up you need to move time forward. The risk is that a non-branded captain takes the rank of war chief, also with his own set of new bodyguard captains.

I'm 36 hours in and just starting the 2nd map. Wow. I guess I like this game.

I'm was a similar position, the side missions are just really fun to play. After finding the game a bit of a challenge I now feel like an ultra death machine, I miss the challenge but it's ridiculously gratifying.

Quick question for those that have finished the story; I have completed 18/20 story missions according to my progress screen, can anyone tell me roughly how long the last two are and if there are any additional story sections afterwards. Basically I want to save at least 2 hours of story to play on Friday night.

You can brand a warchief directly right and skip the whole betrayal part right?

I played a bit this morning and killed that MFer captain who killed me with his poisoned axe. Take that!

I now Interrogate the last mob of every fight if I can to get the details on a new captain. AND! I was surprised to learn that some of these captains are not marked, they merely roam an area which explains how I ended up in a fight with 2 at once(plus mobs).

Still only in the beginning of the game because College and my daughter limit my time, but I cannot wait to get back in and slay some more Uruk!

And now that I can combat drain + get two specials on a hit streak, I've been approaching fights more as a puppet master.

Once you've killed the Warchief, send your captain on a mission to assume the spot. Unless there's a lot of ex-bodyguards or something, he should be able to get it without incident. It doesn't hurt to help him on his mission, either.

Yeah, I keep thinking how cool it would be if you had an Uruk captain get his hand/arm chopped off like Azog in the Hobbit movies and then come back with that dismemberment.

Weird thing for me is that I'm grinding away on all of the captains and so forth but after a point it seems like its only new guys rising in the ranks and I'm not getting very many orcs that I killed before. And its not like I'm even beheading that many.

Just saw the end credits (71%) and I think I'm done with it. Nice game, thought it had pretty good pacing. Looked fantastic on pc, despite the environments being somewhat repetitive in my opinion. Combat was great (obviously couldn't go wrong with the Batman Arkham influences), AC's traversal felt solid as well, and overall just a good game.

On the downside, I got pretty hyped because of the Nemesis System, but honestly, I wasn't blown away. Felt kinda, I don't know the right word, disappointing? Nah, not that. Just... I don't know, just underwhelming. The idea was cool, but I didn't find it completely ground-breaking or something. Also, I liked the premise of Talion being denied death and his quest for vengeance, but the ending and especially end boss (
two QTE's, lol
) were pretty underwhelming. Furthermore, the fact some Captains just jump out of thin air while I was busy with another captain could be extremely annoying. There was even a point where I had to fight 5 random (with no relevance amongst each other) Captains at once.

Not sure with the average review scores in the 85-88 range though, I'd personally give it a 70-75. But to each his own.

Has there been any word on when we can expect character skin packs? I really really hope one of the skin options is another Uruk. I want to play the alpha Orc and make all the warchiefs and captains dance to my tune.

All day every day I just countdown the hours til I can get some more playtime in. Finished the story on the weekend and I am no where near sated yet. Lov this game so much.

Just made (mid-game(?))
Ratbag a warchief

Is there any reason not to kill his bodyguards?

Go ahead, there won't be any consequences

New to game reviews? A 70 is not a "nice game". A 70 is squarely below average for a retail release.

The last few missions won't last more than an hour or so, if that.

Ok thanks. I have done absolutely everything else and I am max level, was trying to make it last as long as possible.

Finished it tonight, including 1000 GS and 100% in-game completion. A very good game, but one that's getting far too much critical praise.

Even after finishing the story and maxxing out my character, I still log on for hours just to enjoy the combat and scenery. Not to mention i'm trying to find more hilariously named orcs/uruks for my army.

I'm trying to do the Rebels achievement and having a hell of a time branding captains.

Is there an easier way than fighting them down to being grabbable and dominating them with a hold? These assholes are usually in a stronghold so I have a million orcs interrupting my dominate. Or if I combat brand dudes to keep others off me they end up killing the fucking captain.

Any pointers?
