Middle-earth: Shadow of Mordor |OT| One Title to rule them all

Just wanted to say that the thread title is entirely awesome.

Absofuckinglutely. Also just a quick idea for anyone who's interested, i'm doing a small voip session with a friend when the game launches to see how well the orcs vary. Also for Revenge kills if any of us die. If anyone's interested, let me know.

I like the slow parts of the first one. Feel like they both fall apart when the action starts. Second one is definitely worse.

Funny, I felt like both films were basically action films trading on the LotR universe/aesthetic. Not bad movies, just not The Hobbit (or I guess The Hobbit plus a BUNCH of extra stuff). Too focused on recreating the action scenes and special effects scenes to make an actual Hobbit movie which would have been much slower paced and lower key on the action bits.

I'd say they would make a worthwhile read as lead up to this game as the writing and handling of the LotR lore will probably be fairly similar in quality. The Fellowship/Two Towers/Return of the King trilogy would set a pretty damn high bar.

Between this and The Evil Within, doesn't seem like a good season for PC ports. Glad I picked up a PS4.

I'm not rich enough to buy SLI-970s and brute force these games.

Every PC release ever will come with reports of performance issues starting out. Look at any pc performance thread ever. I'm not worried.

What is the easiest way of selling my PC or trading it for a PS4? That one dude with completely vague PC problems that could entirely be because of his setup has me spooked. Must be a shit port.

Seriously though, don't let stuff like this spook you until there are real benchmarks and a digital foundry comparison.

I thought someone here had said that the PC version they were playing ran nicely?

This bodes not well. But hey, free is free.

* should probably clarify my free is free remark - I have $46 GMG credit saved up.

Best thing about PC gaming is that I can come back in a year or two, or whatever, buy the game for $5 on a Steam sale, and replay it maxed out on my new upgraded GPU with all the patches, driver updates, and everything.

And on day 1, I can play on it on my PS4, relatively without issue. Sounds good to me.

Because console games are guaranteed bug free.

Getting it on PC later since there will be updates and patches is definitely prudent and really I mean that. Patches and driver updates will definitely improve the pc experience regardless of where the day 1 baseline ends up. Unfortunately I want to play this day one, and only plan to play it once. I'm flexible enough to deal with some bugs if that even becomes an issue.

I don't agree with that, that's entirely subjective.

Okay, I'll make sure to start a Shadow of Mordor Console Performance Thread. I'm sure it will be helpful.

K, I've don't have performance problems that often with games, it's a simple as launching the game and playing on the default settings if you want a console like experience. The bad thing about console performance is there is nothing that can be done about it, on my PC I can turn some stuff down and it's good.

My point about streamlining comes down to things like not even having to worry about stuff like "Default settings", driver versions, VRAM recommendations, etc.

You know,I even would get the game on my PS4 just so I have a second game next to Destiny for it, but the difference in paying 70€ on PS4 vs 25€ on PC is....well it's 45 fucking €.

I thought this game had pre-load? Expected pre-load time is...like an hour and half ago but now the timer is for the release date on my PS4.

edit: I see the time is for when it is playable...so how do i know its pre-loading/downloading? as you can tell its my first time...

Yeah okay... why is it... every streamer i'm watching they are like a one man army bullshit?

At first people told me "oh it's just devs playing on godmode, easy etc" but now it's on a regular stream as well.

I hate, fucking absolutely hate (strong word) ass creed games, soley on their childlike combat experience. Takes zero input/skill from the player to win any ass creed combat. The more I watch footage from this game, the more it resembles ass creed one man army-god-kiling-everything-with-qte-one-hit-combos.

Old ninja gaiden player here (since NES up to ninja gaiden 2 on ps3), but batman asylum trilogy was also very good. So if the combat and (more importantly) combat is like batman i'm cool.

Will be using 360 controller on PC, assuming the game gives a fair challenge, if it's gonna be ass creed difficulty (fable mode) then pre-order canned.

People who own/play this game, are my fears warranted? The game really is too easy?

You can have the same "next gen" experience on your pc

first lower your native resolution to 2006 standards, make sure it's 30 fps (will dip) for that film experience, you'll get bonus points if you smear vaselin on the monitor as well, will simulate that lovely blur console games have to hide the awesome graphics.

Get real, console also have issues, but they can get away just because they have much lower standards in technology

*wink* wink* :)

Don't take my post too seriously, bottomline all systems have flaws

Dunno about regular enemies, but seems like captains / chiefs and their posses can be real bitches:

Im honestly not sure. It runs very smooth though, and I've only experienced some minor slow down 2-3 times in 7 hours, all during wraith interrigations.

I just have to share this aswell.

After 10+ deaths against the same fucking enemy, I finally managed to kill him today. The fucker was immune to most of my attacks and always had a pack of orcs with him whenever I met him. I've met him several times since the start of the game and never managed to kill him.
I've honestly never held such a grudge against a video game character before. He has leveled from 5 to 20 and caused me so much problems.
I spent 3 hours this afternoon, killing off his captains and leveling up, just to be absolutely butchered when I gathered the courage to attack him again,

Then I interrogated an informer and learned that he fears Caragors (the bear/hound things) and that he's susceptible to stealth kills.
So I tamed a beast and let it loose inside his camp after tracking him there, watched as he fled, and followed him at a distance.
When he was alone on a cliff, I snuck up behind him and slit his throat.

God daaaaaaamn, it felt so good.
I love the nemisis system.

Nemesis system is great.

I love how the system remembers so many small details. An orc taunting you because you ran away during the previous battle, an orc with a metal plate covering his eye because you shot him in the eye last time, ...

And then you have this one orc that accidentally killed me during a random battle. He became a captain. I vowed to kill him later, but ended up doing some exploring first. Fought a troll and barely escaped the battle with my life. Didn't have much health left.

But then, out of nowhere, that same orc from before appears with an entire group of orcs near me. I wasn't really prepared so that scumbag kills me again and grows in power... yet again. He actually managed to make me pissed :lol

I'm calling it a night for now, but I'm murdering that bastard tomorrow :p

This seems like it's meant for another thread or something. Mordor on PS4 doesn't run at 30 with dips, etc

Hope you know the PS4 version runs 1080/60. I mean, he's not playing on PS360. Xbone may have issues though.

Shadow of Mordor is 1080/60 with drops on PS4, yeah?

I wouldn't expect to get any better than that on the gaming PC I built in 2011.

I haven't played it, but from what I read in reviews and previews, people said it was rather difficult to take on a group of enemies head on, I sure hope it's not super easy, I really like the idea of building a grudge with a hard enemy and getting the satisfaction of taking him out.

It should pop up in the row of all games and you should be able to press "Options" on it to see the currently installed size.

Where it says "Start" on your usual game titles it will have a countdown timer for when you are able to play the game, while it downloads in the background.

But this is Sony, so expect it to not work for this title because you anticipate it. ;-)

Actually that's a bit of suprise for me. But don't take my post too seriously, it was in jest to his "PC only have bugs but consoles doesn't".

Wasn't aware of that, that's pretty impressive.

If you built a pure gaming rig it would. Also 7950/7970 came out in 2012, a ps4 is a 7870. But still that's impressive if it's 60 fps on ps4

That's not what I was trying to say at all. Not even remotely close.

I was under the impression they were "doing everything they can to get 60fps", which comes from a twitch stream, which was cited in a gamespur.com article that is from July 3rd, being the only site I saw reporting it. I would say wait for Digital Foundry before saying it's 1080p/60fps with drops. Maybe I missed a confirmation, if I did, I apologize.

Fair enough. Waiting for DF is always the correct choice.

I think everyone is super antsy about the eventual DF / similar breakdown. I guess whether you interpret the data we do have as "60 fps with drops" or something more along the lines of "unlocked ~40-60" just depends your expectations.

Not to mention silent treatment on the Xbox One version. Which is just strange.

It's probably going to be fine, but their lack of communication could only lead to worry.

Yeah, it's a lot harder to be optimistic about XB1. The lack of information seems super unnecessary.

Yeah I wish publishers would learn what a valuable asset DF face-offs are and send them advanced copies to have them ready for launch.

And I'm more curious as to the impressions of the XB1 version being 900p/30fps but the PS4 being 1080p/60fps, those don't seem to match. Either way, I'm excited to read the article when it comes!

I have one question.

If someone doesn't want to do fights via the nemesis system and just wants to brawl their way through the game, is this possible? I like the combat, but im not all interested in the RTS element.

I just wanna fuck motherfuckers up.

Hmmm, there isn't any RTS elements, fucking motherfuckers up in turn plays into the nemesis system, you fight enemies and build grudges or convert them to your side, I suppose you could ignore it all together, by just not paying attention to it, but it happens naturally I think with the combat. That's a tough and interesting question to answer as I haven't played it.

The system is the core pillar of the game, you can't just ignore it. But following the Nemesis system basically means straight up killing a bunch of dudes.

Also, there is no RTS element, not sure what gave you that idea.
