MLB 2010-2011 Offseason Thread of Yawn the NL Wins Again, What Else is New?

The Yankees will try to sign Cliff Lee this offseason, but it doesn’t look like they’ll bid as aggressively on the top free agent bats. At this point, they don’t plan to pursue Jayson Werth and Carl Crawford, according to Mark Feinsand of the New York Daily News.

Brett Gardner, Nick Swisher and Curtis Granderson give the Yankees a capable and relatively affordable outfield. Crawford and Werth will require tens of millions of dollars and multiyear commitments, so the Yankees are reluctant to enter the bidding for them.

"We are better with Crawford, but at that price?" a Yankees source asked Feinsand. "I'm not sure it's that good of an upgrade."

Of course we didn’t expect the Yankees to end up with Mark Teixeira two winters ago, but they swooped in with a last minute bid. The Bronx Bombers could get by without Crawford and Werth and it appears that they don’t intend to sign either outfielder, but let’s not rule them out completely until it’s official.

I'll believe it when I see it.

Not surprised. It's going to be a bidding war between the Red Sox, Angels and Phillies. And maybe
Atlanta
Detroit, since they apparently have the money.

How much better is Crawford than Gardner, given what function they'd play in the Yankee offense/defense?

How much better is Werth than Swisher, given what function they'd play in the Yankee offense/defense?

I am much more afraid of Carl Crawford ending up an Angel or Red Sox. It would make much more sense for Werth to be a Brave or a Tiger.

The Yankees NEED Cliff Lee, or a pitcher of/near that caliber. They desperately need to ensure that their rotation is their consistent strength, and not their boom or bust offense ala 2002 - 2007. They will pay him virtually anything. After that, they will see what they can do to make the DH spot better (move A-Rod to full-time DH/Jeter to 3B? Reacquire Damon or Matsui? Call up Montero?).

THOUSAND OAKS, Calif. -- Hall of Fame manager Sparky Anderson has died, his family announced Wednesday. He was 76.

Anderson, who managed the Cincinnati Reds and Detroit Tigers to World Series titles, died as a result of complications from dementia, family spokesman Dan Ewald said in a statement.

His death came a day after the family announced he had been placed in hospice care at his home.

Anderson won 2,194 games as a manager, which was the third-highest total in major league history when he retired, trailing Connie Mack and John McGraw. He now stands sixth, also trailing Tony La Russa, Bobby Cox and Joe Torre.

Anderson was the first manager to win World Series titles in both leagues and the only manager to lead two franchises in career wins.

He led Cincinnati's Big Red Machine to World Series wins in 1975-76. He won four National League pennants in Cincinnati from 1970-78 and then was fired after consecutive second-place finishes.

Anderson went to the American League and won there, too, directing the Tigers to a World Series title in 1984 and a division title in 1987. He retired after the 1995 season and was added to the Hall of Fame by the Veterans Committee.

Anderson is survived by his wife, Carol; three children and nine grandchildren.

Information from The Associated Press was used in this report.

RIP Sparky :(

The Red Sox have excersised David Ortiz's $12.5 million option for 2011.

The Rangers have signed manager Ron Washington to a 2-year extension. The monetary amount is not available yet.

Despite the Dodgers excercising their part, Scott Podsednik has declined his $2 million mutual option for 2011 and is now a free agent. Podsednik gained the right to decline it since he was traded mid-season.

Casey Kotchman refused an outright assignment from the Mariners and is now a free agent.

Interesting piece from a minor leaguer who wasn't good enough:

I'm one of the ones that didn't make it. For six years I toiled in the minors with many of these guys. They moved on to success; I became mired in mediocrity. I simply wasn't good enough to play with them on that stage. Now I've moved on to other things. They've moved on to more rings.

I sat on the couch beside my wife as Wilson threw the last cutter. A swing and a miss ended it. Posey, looking all of 19, removed his mask and ran towards him. Lincecum hurdled the netting in front of the dugout, Bumgarner just behind him.

Emotions built within as the pile of bodies grew larger. Elation. Pride. Extreme joy. A touch of envy. A touch of jealousy. Nostalgia.

With the emotions came memories. Chasing an opossum after a game with Bumgarner (he wanted to catch it and bring it on the bus). Playing cards on long bus trips with Posey. Walking outside a San Bernardino hotel with Schierholtz, and a cop warning us of the area's dangers. ("I wouldn't walk around this area unless you wanna get robbed or shot!") Ishikawa's twenty-first birthday. Running with Sanchez in the outfield, pushing each other to do one more. Romo talking to me about the joys of the birth of his son. Working out for the first time with Wilson. (Every moment is an event with Wilson.) Playing "College Football" against Cain in my first spring training.

Some people told me recently I contributed to this championship moment simply by playing in the minors with these guys. Perhaps, in some distant, metaphysical way. But I downplay this. Nothing I did ever prepared Posey for catching Lincecum. Nothing I ever did helped Romo throw his signature slider. They learned these things on their own. I taught them nothing.

Yet we were friends, and we trekked a common journey together. Though my journey ended sooner than theirs, I still enjoyed the moments with them.

We seldom talk anymore. Life's present and future plans all too often stifle old friendships. Memories, however, continue to smolder. It is through these memories that I build my own World Series ring, and I'll carry this invisible ring with me until the day I die.

Bryce Harper's first AFL HR. I'm still not totally sure why he's there, but at least following him gives me something to do over the offseason besides weep every time the Nats are connected to another garbage FA.
That sounded really good off the bat.

Q. You’ve expressed interest in returning to Texas, but what are the chances you do? (Francoeur is arbitration-eligible and a candidate to be non-tendered.)

A. I don’t know. A lot depends on what they’re going to want to do, where they see Vlad [Guerrero] and DH'ing. They’ll have some decisions to make, but I’m not even worried about that right now. I’m just going to enjoy a month off and then starting Dec. 1, I’ll get with Mac [Brian McCann] and [former Brave Mark] DeRosa. DeRosa and I were talking out there in the World Series; we’re going to start hitting Dec. 1. Probably out at Chipper's [Jones'] place.

Q. A part-time role isn’t what you’re after, is it?

A. No, I want to play every day, and the Rangers know that. That’s why I said they’ll have decisions to make. If not, hopefully I’ll go somewhere else. I definitely want to go back, but that stuff will play itself out in the next couple months.

Looks like this means Frenchie isn't coming back to Texas (Thank Science)

Looks like there's a fan movement getting started trying to get the Giants to wear these 1905 throwbacks at some point next season:

Jon Heyman of SI is reporting the Marlins have offered Dan Uggla a 4-year deal worth at least $40 million.

It may not go down right now because in 2011, Uggla would only make $8 million. His 2010 salary was $7.8 million. He still has one more year of arbitration and would likely command a salary of at least $10 million for 2011 if they went to arbitration.

Also, Uggla wants a 5-year deal.

YES! Truer words have never been spoken by me.
Looking at the older thread, you called it back in late September when the Padres were stumbling:

Glad to see his head is in the right place...SF Giants World Series 2010 confirmed. :(

heh, there was only one lead change in the World Series this year. Game 1, SF took the lead in the 5th after being down 2-0 after 2.

I wonder if the GMs are going to be hanging out at Starbucks more often after this World Series. I'm starting to think you are going to see more of these mid-range talent stacked teams.

Jays turned down Gregg's option. Prob just gonna offer him arb like Downs/Frasor.

e: And they just traded for Miguel Olivo for cash/PTBNL. Guess they'll turn down the option on Molina. FUCK YEA. e2:Oh jesus christ i just realised we already picked up Molina's option. At least we can kick him to AAA now and I never have to see his lazy sonofabitch ass again. Olivo plays through kidney stones!
e3: Actually now I'm more confused because the Jays can buy him out for 500k and maybe get a pick cause he's typeB. Whatevs, figure this out tomorrow.

Yeah, just saw Bastian say they can decline the option and get a sandwich pick, basically paying for a draft pick if it's cash. Odd.

Time to max those picks.

I'll join the blogging too. Alex Cora is still in town right? I probably can make a creepy obsessive blog about him.

Cora: "See that dude with the ninja turtles avi? He's gonna start blogging about me."
Varitek: "... does he have no life?"
Cora: "Probably but I don't care!"

I was calling for that shit in each of the last two season threads, and nobody even quoted me mang.

Bring back OT Loose Balls!
Shit, if blogging for the Mets gets you access to the insiders, I'll even write about Mets baseball. Lord knows I know enough about it...

But can you spin Oliver Perez as a trade asset in a deal for Scott Kazmir? This is important now...

Miguel Olivo? AA is already making crazy moves; esp. if he just sent cash to COL only to decline Olivo's option and take the pick.

yup!

"jays just declined the option on Olivo making him a free agent. That puts Buck back in the running for a possible deal" - sportsnetberry

Question to Yankee fans, if your front office were going to bend over and for some godforsaken reason give Derek Jeter a big contract, would you prefer that they just give him a 1 year/$100 million contract instead of 5/100, just to get it out of the way and get his corpse off the field faster?
