Why are the Braves suddenly selling their OF? If they're planning to trade any Upton it should be BJ, even for 10 cents on the dollar.

Well, Jason and Justin were both going to be free agents after the season, and the org has a ton of holes. So it makes sense to trade them.

But not for Shelby Miller.

Well the Braves can't trade my Heyward jersey.

WTF

The issue with vanity, ladies and gentlemen.

I thought BJ Upton had the M's on his no trade list? He seems to hate Seattle.

Surprised the Braves haven't sold high on Gattis to some AL team that needs a bat.

Also lol @ "nobody wants a free BJ!"

Mariners are always going after J-Upton and never do anything.

Except that time we traded for him and he nixed it.

A lot has happened since then though. Mariners aren't piles of shit and we signed Cano.

I could see something happening like Upton for Saunders and some B tier pitchers. Don't think a year of Upton for Walker would fly now unless he stated he would sign an extension before the trade.

A small chuckle from me at the Jay's deal.
A smile and a nod from me for the Braves/Cardinals trade... seems good for STL, I'm actually a little surprised that the Braves let it happen for what seems fairly little.
As for the Marlins? Not enough LOLs on Earth. RIP Marlins. I can't believe barely a decade ago you were a World Series winning team.

Admittedly, I'll agree with what Sanjuro says below... it's just... that's so much money and so many years and it's hard for me to look past that.

The Stanton deal doesn't really bother me much. I think the general negative reactions are "NOBODY IS EVER WORTH THAT!", while they wildly forget what sport they are commenting on.

If the Cubs or Dodgers had made that deal the Baseball World would be shooting their creamy calculator goo all over the signing. It's the Marlins though, and we have to hate the Marlins.

Funny how the stadium tax was such a big issue when Loria started his fire sale yet those same assholes are silent about the Braves doing the same fucking thing.

Well that just happened. Shelby is going to be good so I don't feel too bad for taking J Hey.

It's funny because after the Upton signings, the STL Today boards (mostly ignorant motherfuckers) were saying how "thuggerific" that outfield was. As if Heyward was just some monkey or whatever. In that vein it is kinda weird how few African-Americans have worn the Birds on the Bat in the last few years.

Wasn't Tony LaRussa a fairly well-known racist? Maybe my memory is failing me, but I seem to recall he wasn't a fan of black people.

I haven't seen enough of Hey to know if he's great or not. I remember him about 2-3 years ago being hot shit but haven't heard a lot from him recently. So what you're saying is, I need to go pick-up a JHey jersey ASAP?

You still browse the cesspool that is Cards Talk? Haven't gone there since the dark, dark times of Cardinals baseball in 2007-2008.

Haha I remember having this conversation a couple years ago. That board's hate of itself is just too good sometimes. Lately though no, I've been sticking to MLB-GAF for all that is baseball peanut-eating.

The Stanton deal doesn't bother me because I know it is a team friendly 5 year deal and he will get paid something more bananas next time around.

With ATL trading Heyward, makes sense for them to deal Justin Upton now. Seattle--no longer on his no-trade list--a good fit. (For Walker?)

The whole thing is backloaded and he has an opt out after 5 seasons. If he's good then he gets a new deal again in 5 years (which we can laugh at). If he sucks, then he sucks and it doesn't matter what they were paying him.

Upton for Saunders, Taylor and Dominic Leone.

I was actually curious about his opt out ability. The way I've read it is that it seemed to be active immediately.

Might have just missed it, I've been jumping around to different articles/outrage.

Has anyone done a good analysis of the deal yet? At $6m/win, it'd mean he'd have to be worth a little over 50 WAR over the lifetime of the contract to make it a good deal, but the value of a win should keep up going over the next 13 years, which works out to less than 50 WAR. It's a crazy amount of money, but as of right now it looks more like a Jeter/1st A-Rod long-term deal than it does...well, pretty much every other megadeal that's ever been signed.

What the fuck?

That's who I think of GAF hating when all the Cards-bashing goes on. Pretty horrific stuff goes on inside the St. Louis kingdom which is no surprise when you look at its geography:
nytimesmap3.JPG

It's all those WW2 vets and whatnot who are clinging to their baseball team as the last vestige of a world order that's about forty years gone. I'm sure if you looked hard enough you'd find ATL fans who thought the same thing when Chipper left and the OF became a "blackhole."

Spend the afternoon perusing his video highlights page and weep in his glory.

Yeah, the WWII vets are generally really active on message boards and twitter.

But my grandpa's dad's friend is really good at the internets, or so I've been told!

You get the point though. Old backwater hicks with a DSL line can do a lot of damage.

I'd say even that demographic is still highly unlikely to venture anywhere else outside their humorous/pornographic chain emails

RT @DOBrienAJC: #Braves Heyward said he hoped team would approach him about long-term extension, & never did. "I made it clear to them I wanted to be here."

Oh
