Watching the replay again, it was the wrong call.

The rule says the umpires can put the runner back on the base they think they would have reached if the call was made correctly. But Utley was never making it to 2nd base. He was basically lying tangled up with Tejada past the base and would have been instantly tagged out if he was called safe.

If the rule does make him safe, that's a terrible rule.

Its a shame he got hurt, but its a clean play based on the rules.

How do you fix that? No sliding on double plays? Then we run into players trying to jump in front of the ball.

This isnt the NFL. This is baseball. The object of the runner on that play is to disrupt the double play so they dont turn 2 while being able to reach the bag. The rules states he has to be withiin arms reach of the bag, and sliding parallel, both things he did. Tejada fucked up by going pass 2b when he should have stayed on the first base side of the bag. That's a terrible defensive play by he and the SS.

I'm also rooting for the Mets in this series, so dont give me any homer/you're rooting for the Dodgers crap. It was clean based on the rules, and the defenders screwed themselves.

If the infielder allows you a clean path to 2nd and you slide into him anyway it should be interference at the minimum.

I'm not calling that a bad defensive play, it was an impossible turn, Tejadas momentum was taking him up the field so his only shot to turn two is to try and spin. I guess your argument is that its Murphy's fault that he got laid the fuck out, I didn't see it that way. Only other option is to maybe eat the ball, but again, his momentum is taking him in another direction.
