MLB 2016 Regular Season Official Thread - Do Not Attempt to Ketchup

Weird that every guy that has gotten caught did so because of something he unknowingly took. What a crazy coincidence.

I was going to say this, I guess is PR speak, if I would had been caught cheating I would be like. "Yeah, I was juicing, hopefully next time I will be smarter and not get caught" I think to this day maybe only Jose Canseco is the only player that haven't been apologetic about it or even deny it.

okay but he also blew his finger off with a pistol

I wonder if that was negotiated as a "just in case they add one" type of thing?

Sometimes this stuff isn't as weird as it looks, like the famous M&M clause in Van Halen gig contracts, which was (allegedly) put in to smoke out whether the venue owners were even reading the contract and addressing the more important requirements.
maybe they thought there would be a division mvp award in the next 10 years. /shrug. or they just didn't care. 252 million!

Well shit. Guess the convo stops being about fringe guys juicing.

The only thing I hate about thses 'unknowingly' statements is the mandatory reference to testing clean x number of times. As if cheating a drug test is something that no one ever does.

That's the go to excuse because supplements are unregulated and it is possible they're not as described. It's still not a valid excuse, but supplements are the easiest target to blame.
Unfortunate that there is an easy excuse to use.

hopefully this was the game that gets danks out of the rotation.
Danks currently is 0-4
white sox have a total of 7 losses on the season.

danks have given up 18 runs in 22.1 innings
white sox have given up 58 runs in 205 innings meaning danks has given up around 30% of the team runs in 10% of the total pitching.

without counting danks the rest of the white sox have given up 40 runs over 182.2 innings. or a 1.97 team era.

from the start I was hoping danks would be long relief this year.
the white sox brought up johnson for a bit but didn't even give him a shot, instead calling up a different player to make a spot start poorly. hopefully they bring him back up and give him a few stars as his 3.5 era that we have seen in the majors last year and in the minors so far would be great for a 5th starter.

if not I guess I will just continue to hope that games that danks starts he gets lit up as if the white sox don't want to give one of their younger players a shot to get mlb exp in the 5th slot even though they have plenty of good looking young pitchers, they can just trade for a 5th starter as long as the rest of the team doesn't fall apart.

for the record, tonight's loss was expected, the series really starts tomorrow with BAL and should be fun.

I always hate to hate a player that "wants" to do good but seriously, get him out of the rotation. How did he get such a contract to be making the most? You can't tell me that secretly Sale, Q and others don't think to themselves "this guy is like that government worker who gets paid big bucks to take hour dumps, look at porn, and sleep on the job all day."

I always love the chisox.com headlines and someone "had" to put up the one about how he doesn't want to throw in the towel. It's time for him to come to grips that he sucks and he should retire and give back some of that money(ok I know it doesn't work that way but it should.)

Of course on the other side of it is despite him sucking it's hard to win when the offense only puts up 2 runs for him or anyone.

Oh and why does Frazier have such an awkward swing like he is never balanced? Sure I'll take it but every homerun I seen seems like he is all upper body and throwing the bat at the ball.

From MLB.com:

MRI confirms that Cubs' Kris Bryant has mild right ankle sprain. He will not play today, and is not expected to go on the DL.

Yeah, saw this earlier. Thank god! Still have Baez and Stella to take over for a few days. Just want him back for the Pirates series.

Which I find hard to believe. Teams drill what home what players can and cannot take.

The "I didn't know what I took" excuse has always been the default answer. Gordon's response is pretty much the cut and paste response from any player that has been suspended.

Except for A-Rod. I believe him completely *waves at SuperMalo*

Unfortunate that there is an easy excuse to use.

Unfortunate? For whom? Colabello got busted taking a drug that was made in East Germany, 30 years ago.

Lmao that these guys expect people to believe they took it accidentally after shopping at Popeye's or GNC.

Trade the entire team. Nice Guy Jeff Francoeur for Team Cancer Jose Fernandez

Do PEDs, get large contact. Get Caught. Rinse and Repeat.

only way this stops is if the player's union agrees to contacts being voided when people get caught.

So then Bryce Harper can use PEDs and get caught on purpose, have his contract voided, then turn around and sign for $500 million with a new team? Sounds good.

I know this is a sensitive topic that could take up full threads, but I really wish they'd allow PEDs in baseball. If it's illegal to take in real life, then they shouldn't be allowed (and should be prosecuted like everyone else if found in possession), but otherwise, let them play.

The idea that it makes you a superhuman home run masher overnight is outrageous. Did they improve Bonds' game? Sure, maybe. Would he have been superhuman without them? Yes. What'd they do to Dee's game? Make his bunts go a little further up the 3rd base line?

Jon Heyman ‏@JonHeyman

as said on @MLBNetwork, arrieta and cubs are apart in contract talks (4 years vs. 7) no optimism for long deal soon.

also on @MLBNetwork, while i believe bautista would take less than $150M-plus, 5-yr ask, he wouldnt take less than $100M.

w/ backloaded deal & only $3M in '16, gordon benefited further. had he gone yr to yr he'd have made $6M in '16 (& lost $3M)

The thing is I think Danks could actually do well as a middle relief right now. like, lock down well. If you let him put a little extra on his stuff and only had guys face him once he could likely still be a 3-4era pitcher, he just isn't a good starter anymore and it just isn't going to happen.

I am only so frustrated because the white sox have a few good looking pitchers that are ready for a 5th spot that they are not using (that likely only potential out at a 3-4 starter but still) the big one of course being Erik Johnson who pitched fine at the end of last season, balances out the rotation better as a right hander, and is under team control for a lot longer and thus should be getting some more major league experience to potentially replace Latos next year where Fulmer can take the 5th spot.

Hopefully I don't have to root for him to do bad to many more times.
As for the offense, well it is likely getting to the point where when he pitches it's harder for the offense to get going because they know that he is going to give up a ton of runs and thus have more pressure on them. I know that shouldn't be the case but I have to image it is much easier to bat if you know with chris sale on the mound if you make some mistakes you have a chance to come back still compared to danks that you need to succeed and get a lead built up.

Nothing accidental about it and it's never an excuse. It adds doubt when you wonder why he would be taking a 30 year old steroid in the first place when there are much better and more undetectable modern PEDs now. It also adds doubt when it's an oral steroid. Is it possible that Popeye's is selling crap that could have antique steroids thrown in? Damn right it's possible. That unregulated crap is very questionable and too many dudes are using it.

Regardless, it's no excuse. The rules are clear on that. The suspension is valid if you're using a needle or supplementing with some bogus powder. Either way it's still stupid and not an excuse.

At least the Braves are providing opportunity. It might not be working out that great, but they gotta try.

I don't think Philly was considered significantly better than Atlanta, but they're having success with their marginals. Valasquez is looking like a nice breakout.
