The craptastic, "retro" animation of episode 4 (I think that's the number) caused it. I hadn't heard the meltdown was the catalyst for the bathhouse fan service episode, but I guess that may explain it.Son of Godzilla said:Anyone remember the timing of the Gurren Lagann crazy otaku meltdown shit? And yeah, it's probably the best anime from the later half of the 00's, and not many would dispute that.
pretty much, its also surprisingly period accurate.Extollere said:IIRC, Strike Witches was an excuse to get popular underground artist Shimada Fumikane have a show designed entirely around his character ideas. I think that trailer obviously points this out. The show doesn't exist to tell a particular story, or present anything meaningful. It was just a ploy (as far as I can tell) to make money and see his popular characters in animation. It's pretty much a Moe show at it's purest, which centers around desire/infatuation for a particular look of character. In this case loli mecha-masume with nekomimi.
I think I got that right...

= why it's not advisable to mention anime in general real-world conversation except to the very carefully initiated.
Yep, they've adopted the software industry's habit of rushing it to market and then patching it. I hope this doesn't encourage too much sloppiness. However, over here, South Park makes great use of it to keep the show timely.Fireye said:One of the biggest boons to Anime production these days is the ability to air a mostly finished product, then go back and finish touching up or reanimating certain scenes, without having to do major production changes. Some tv episodes have 3 versions by the time they hit DVD/BD, a first airing version, a multiple-airing version (repeats or rebroadcasts), and a DVD/BD version.
That, and scenes can have all sorts of background activity and environmental effects without the associated logistical nightmares of traditional animation. It's nice, but it's also a good thing that some directors still believe in minimalism.Fireye said:Oh, and you can re-use portions of a scene with relative ease. Want to re-use that background in a later episode? No need to dig it up to shoot with your new scene, just drop in the existing scanned background. Or, do you use the exact same animation several times over different backgrounds or environment scenes? Copy/pasta!

Sometimes it's not a bad thing(Ranma), but most of the times it just pisses me of and it's the main reason why most new animes suck to me. I've seen that a billion times now, time to do something else Japan!

Wouldn't Dr. Slump be particularly difficult to translate because of the abundant use of puns?SonicMegaDrive said:There are dozens of shows that I wish receive the fansubbing treatment.
Like Dr. Slump, for crying out loud!
It's only one of the most popular anime in Japan ever. And done by the artist who created the most popular anime in the west ever!
What givvvvves?
I saw an amazing fansub of one of the Dr. Slump movies in the mid '90s. It was a shit quality 3rd or 4th generation VHS, but I was laughing so hard. Haven't been able to track it down, at all, since.rpmurphy said:Wouldn't Dr. Slump be particularly difficult to translate because of the abundant use of puns?

cosmicblizzard said:You know this thread really has reminded me how rare good original anime not based off manga is. Gurren Lagann is the last one I thought was amazing and Code Geass is the last one I thought was good. I hope it gets better soon.
vas_a_morir said:I bailed out in early 2008. Just, nothing that interesting has come out. I was really spoiled by 2007, I thought it was going to get better. I was wrong. I haven't followed a series online in a long time. Last show I watched to completion was the second season of Zetsubou Sensei.
Do love manga, though. It's a lot less obnoxious.

Not a big fan of that either (see Shin-chan). If the original meaning is lost, they might as well just make a new show instead. I'm curious though as to how the existing dubs did it, since I don't speak those languages. Does wordplay take a major role in comedy moreso for non-English languages? Can it be compared to that of e.g. Chinese or Japanese?Magypsy23 said:YES. I read some of the comic a few years ago, they'd have to rewrite everything if they were to release it in any other language.

but that won't shut up many of the peoples who enjoy complaining about Animes these days :/
the cyberpunk atmosphere was just an excuse to make a non interesting story which made the whole show average.SonicMegaDrive said:I like Bubblegum Crisis.
Decent-good animation, AWESOME music, interesting stories, cyberpunk setting, loads of gratuitous violence...what's not to like? The first few episodes were darker in tone than the later ones(a sign of the 80's switching over into the 90's), but besides that minor qualm, I like the show a lot.
Well, the original at least. I'm not a big fan of the remake from the late 90's.
Does not compute. That show seems to be trying to be as "moe" as anything outside of the really overt ones. Couldn't stand it.faridmon said:Kaiji season 2 and the inevitable Spice and Wolf Season 3 says you are wrong.

Amir0x said:I have very high level of difficulty getting into anime precisely because of shit like this. I also have a problem with the writing of most anime, the obsession with giant robots and POWERLEVELSMAGICBLASTSTOYOURFACE. But loli/moe is definitely the most offensive thing of all. People tell me to understand the differences between American culture and Japanese culture, but I draw a certain line in places. This is one of those lines. FUCK cultural differences when it comes to lolicon/moe. Japan needs to man the fuck up on this shit.
The last anime I enjoyed thoroughly was Seirei no Moribito. It contains almost none of the stuff I hate in anime, it's also a joy to watch. My favorite thing about anime has always been the art, mainly the intensively detailed backgrounds. It's quite impressive to someone like me who loves art. Most moe/loli doesn't even have this aspect to be fond of.
Besides the implied endorsement of pedophile basement dwellers, it's simply offensive as a rule and I genuinely look down on any and all people who actually enjoy that sort of thing. I don't find it bad at all to say I know I'm better than those people.
Stuff like...
Monster
Seirei No Moribito
Hajime No Ippo
Samurai Champloo
Gankutsuou
All Studio Ghibli Works
Black Lagoon
This is the stuff I like. So little of it left.
