It's an obsession, usually from the male audience, with "cuteness".
I thought it just meant "obsessed"?

Whatever it is I'm sure most people in this thread have their own variations on what they think it means.

Great Rumbler said:
Using a strict definition you could argue that I suppose, but in practical usage it's an obsession with female characters that have cute characteristics.
cute is the subjective here, i'd imagine there are male characters that females (fujoshi) find moe as well.

But the thing is, it's almost always used in conjunction with something that causes feelings of wanting to the protect the character. It's not just "cuteness" but "cute weakness".

There's probably some usage among female anime fans, but I don't think it's used nearly as much.

but that's only if you're basing the definition soley off miyazaki's / wiki loli girl definition. If anything there's moe elements in BL (gay guys) with the uke of the pairing (bitch).

Like I said, it does probably get used by female fans too, but by the far the most prevalent usage of the term among fans and even among anime shows has been with reference to male anime fans' obsession with "cute vulnerability" or "cute weakness".

it's kind of funny how loan words lose things in translation, such as otaku and weeaboo.. the latter being closer in meaning to the original meaning of otaku

*shrugs* I don't watch any moé/lolicon anime (Durarara & FMA:B are the only currently airing shows I'm watching) and I'm okay with that.
It's certainly not ideal, but there's plenty of great anime I've left to watch (just picked up Paranoia Agent, to complete my Satoshi Kon collection).

It's a slang word anyway, the original meaning of "moe" is "budding".

And "weeaboo" is not a Japanese word. It's from a 4chan filter that replaced "wapanese" with "weeaboo" and the word itself came from a PBF comic that just made the word up.

Ah, Nadia.

It's still my favorite Gainax series. It's hard to believe it's 20 years old. It's still as vibrant and fresh as ever.

god, i have the whole series on dvd, such a great show. It gets even better when you start interpreting it, making connections to NGE (and how Nadia could actually be a prequel to NGE :D b).

Sigh, we dont get shows like that today.

nanoha's A's is the best magical girl show of all time! don't be hating!

I fought the urge to include Sutoraiku Witchīzu in the hopes people wouldn't recognize the name.

Woah. Surprised you mentioned Shigofumi. Didn't think anybody on GAF watched that.

But both of you didn't bother to list:

Hikaru no Go
Hajime no Ippo
Zipang
Kaiba
Paradise Kiss
Kaleido Star (1-26)
Beck
Yakitate Japan!
Fantastic Children (guilty pleasure)
The Twelve Kingdoms (stopped @ 39)

I just finished watching Kara no Kyoukai and there's DEFINITELY no lolicon in that, and if there's any real moe it's pretty well hidden by the blood and guts flying everywhere. Well, technically the poor moe is covered from head to toe in blood and guts after she's telekinetically crushed people into piles of goo. Asagami Fujinou, take a bow! :lol

I'd like to see more studios take this approach (referring to the OVA/movie release). A lot of content was produced over a relatively short time. Pitty it was so boring and releasing everything out of order really wasn't beneficial.

Considering how simple the underlying story actually was, the way KnK was released, following the novel's chronologically out of order approach, was the right thing to do IMHO even though it made the first movie really, really bad. I admit it, I wasn't sure if I wanted to continue watching after seeing the first movie, but I'm really glad I did. Damn, man, if you were bored during the graphic mutilations, I hope I never meet you in real life, because you're a fucking serial killer. :lol

We will. The question is how many. TV anime is slowly fading to OVA/movie releases for some years now. I eagerly await Broken Blade.

The Great Anime Crash of 2010: Moe Bubble Finally Bursts

With the news that announced anime for spring 2010 total only 25, down from an incredible peak of 60 or more in the heady spring of 2006, many cannot help but conclude that the anime bubble has finally burst.

Having approximately 25 titles announced so far (with at most a further 5-10 unannounced titles thought possible), the spring 2010 season is dwarfed by the output of previous years in the same season, which exceeded 60 shows by some counts, and represents the most precipitous decline yet.

With the bulk of recent titles made up by the products of the so-called “moe boom,” most observers seem to consider the collapse to have been caused by a surge of nondescript or outright dubious titles flooding the market.

Recent years have also seen the worst excesses of the anime industry reach absurd proportions, with the Endless Eight fiasco a case in point.

Sentiment increasingly seems to view this not as a debilitating crash but instead as a much needed return to normalcy, with the industry now having the chance to replace an unsustainable torrent of vapid and low quality shows with the kind of quality franchises which projected the industry into its boom in the first place.

probably NSFW The Great Anime Crash of 2010: Moe Bubble Finally Bursts

well lets hope for the best.

You might also want to add Eureka 7 and Xam'd: Lost Memories to your queue. Both of them are highly underappreciated, but two of the greatest series of last decade.

i've seen eureka 7 but it never really grabbed hold of me, so i ended up dropping it early.

as for xam'd, even a bitter pirate like me would feel guilty downloading an anime that was released day and date subbed electronically, so i'll wait for Canadian psn video for that one. :P

I agree that Eureka 7 is a slow burner. It took me somewhere around 11 episodes before it clicked, but when it did, I couldn't wait to see what would happen next week. I'd recommend you giving it a second change, but it's all down to personal tastes, I guess. :)

Hope you get to see Xam'd soon, it really blew me away by its production values.

Always bet on Bones.

I got through episode 12 of Xam'd and quite frankly it was 12 episodes of absolutely nothing happening in very pretty ways. I might resume at some point, but seriously, there's slow burn and then there's half the show's planned number of episodes and nothing happens.

This is what killed Ergo Proxy for me, the moment they left the dome the show lost it's way dramatically until the end when the creators suddenly decided they needed to finish it so they slapped something on the end which was absolutely incoherent. The only episode I liked between leaving Romdeau and arriving back there was the one where they were waiting for the wind to come back so they could sail their airship. (Ironically, the doing of nothing in that episode was a metaphor for the whole series' failure.) The pseudo-philosophical mumbo-jumbo was absolutely unjustifiable as well, I have never seen a series where the creator was that hellbent on demonstrating how much better read than you he was. Maybe if he was a bit better at scripting and overall story design than he was at being pretentious it wouldn't have sucked as much as it did.

One thing I really liked about Xam'd were the characters. Seeing them develop through the series was a joy, but it's true that Xam'd is a slow burner too. The second half of the show really got me hooked.
