I still think these guys might have a magnum opus in them, but whether or not they ever release an earth-shattering album, their catalogue to date is still pretty impressive. With tunes like 2 Rights Make 1 Wrong, and Mogwai Fear Satan, it's hard not to at least respect these guys and their talent. Can't wait to hear new material in late 2005.

What are your favourite Mogwai albums? Songs? Have you seen them live? Why does Mogwai rock so much? Discuss!

p.s. slow dancing to "Tracy" is really fucking cool, and making out to Young Team as a whole is pretty wicked as well. :p

I like Dial:Revenge because Gruff Rhys and Cian Ciaran of Super Furry Animals do the vocals for that track, and they're sung in Welsh. :)

(Yes, I am that predictable)

But come on, that's a really nice song, SFA connection or not.

I love a billion songs from these guys. One of my fave bands today.

Incredible band live, and my last REALLY REALLY good show i can remember going to. Quite the experience seeing them live in a closed venue.

Few bands can drown your ass in a sea of noise in such a blissful manner.

My girlfriend gave me Happy Songs For Happy People a few weeks ago and I've been listening to it non-stop.

I completely agree that Mogwai is great.

My Father My King is absolutely fantastic - if it's not the best they've done (so far) it's undoubtedly my favorite they've done.

i still remembering listening to Young Team the first time - i thought to myself "what is this wonderfully rocking noise!?" and was immediately hooked. one thing i've always found really cool is how well they make a song sound so amazing through dynamics and layering. look at "sine wave"; what starts off as a simple organ, hooked in with at first sounds like rhythmic white noise followed by a piercingly subtle guitar riff... and the layers just keep adding on until it becomes a massive entity of sounds that just ROCKS.

what i also dig is how they've looked at new musical directions with Happy Song for Happy People. I Know You Are But What Am I? is so wonderfully ominious that it gives me chills as its story unfolds.

one thing is for certain - watching them live is a sight (and sound) to behold. without a doubt they have put on the loudest shows i have ever been to - my eardrums are probably still reeling from the onslaught. still, they never have disappointed and even though their studio stuff is great it definitely pales compared to live gigs.

check 'em out live if you can and bring some earplugs!

Shit! Here I am listening to their self titled EP and thinking "God damn I love Mogwai" when I run across this thread. Good timing, dudes.

Mogwai rocks.

I hear their show is really fucking loud. My friend saw dalek open for Mogwai. dalek is the loudest act I've ever experienced. I can't imagine that.

I have been meaning to get into Mogwai for a long time now.....what the best album to start out with? I have had "Young Team" on my to buy list for quite a while now.

"Young Team" is a great album to start off with. just follow their discography and i think you should be fine.

I totally agree with this. Young Team is the perfect point to start off with Mogwai and give you a feel of what they're about.

Come On, Die Young has a very love/hate relationship with Mogwai fans, so you might want to skip on getting that right away since it's VERY slow and you almost have to be in a certain state of mind to listen to it the way it's meant to be listened to. It can be either really beautiful or boring depending on when you listen to it.

If you can find the EP (+2, +4, or whatever) then I would totally recommend that as well since it's pretty damn awesome.
