Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate announced for Wii U/3DS, coming to West, no 3DS online

Oh sorry my mistake. I meant the discount on 3DS/WiiU game(s). Amazon USA is apparently offering $20 off if bought together.

I already have the hardware. Just looking out for a decent price for both in UK.

That would be up to NOE to announce that. So far, nothing.

I've always wanted to try a Monster Hunter game, and I know this has probably been asked before, so I'll apologize in advance, but are these games just as fun if I'm only playing single player, or should I wait to get a Wii U to get the full experience of playing with people online?

Not sure if it's official but the swedish store Webhallen have a discount running for a 3DS/WiiU bundle
I know that doesnt help you but it might be a sign?

edit: the discount is about 16.5% or about 20 USD off

I don't care much about Monster Hunter, but I was totally going to bite on the all-black 3DS XL bundle, just to get an XL that's in a color I like. Then I find out that bundle is only for Europe. Boo!

So I go to Nintendo.com out of curiosity, and I see that Monster Hunter is not even listed in the Wii U games section. They have every other game I can think of there – including "games" such as “Wii Street powered by Google”, Youtube, Amazon Instant Video, Hulu Plus, Netflix, a bunch of E-shop games, and a bunch of unreleased games, but not Monster Hunter. Search the site, and all you get is Monster Hunter Tri, the Wii game.

I mean, the Wii U has the most empty release schedule I've seen since the Jaguar days, you'd think they could at least put a moderately well-known game in the damn list. Wow.

Download the demo this week (if you have a 3DS). And whether it is fun in single player depends on your gaming mentality tbh, I.e. you don't mind grinding for materials by killing certain monsters etc.

I wouldn't say they are as fun as when playing online, but don't take that to mean it is unfun. The game is great, it's just greater when playing online. Hope that makes sense.

Just as fun? No.

Still pretty fun? Yes.

Really fun alone, and try the demo but don't take that as the final test because it just throws you into a random hunt with a 20 minute time limit, unlike the 50 minute limits on quests in the actual game, and no preparation or no aspects of the game other than that

The demo quests tend to give you a lot of items and better equipment than you would normally have if you were facing the same boss for the first time. If you know what you're doing (i.e. you've played a MH game before and you're familiar with the controls), the time limit in the demo isn't a big deal.

I tried playing the PSP version(Freedom Unite) on Vita solo and was bored out of my mind. I imagine it's different with friends. Just didn't find the core gameplay all that compelling or interesting.

How different of an experience is this from tri? Are the boss monsters still
Deviljho/Alatreon/Jhen Mohran
? Is there a different village/online city?

I'm trying to decide if it's worth purchasing a wii-u just for this, or if I should wait for the next numbered game.

Those bigger monsters return, and they all have G-Rank battles (that can be played single player this time). Additionally, Jhen has a subspecies, and Deviljho has a sorta!sub-species.

Ceadeus is also present along with a subspecies.

There is a new big monster too.

Online city I believe is different,, whilst village is the same, there are much more different monsters then just those, there are also subspecies of each monster which will have difference abilities etc.

how so? is what monster is blast good against?

All of them. It's not so much an element as it is an effect.

Essentially, you keep attacking with a slime weapon, the effect builds up and eventually explodes (hence, blast). It's a very powerful asset that nothing is resistant to as far as I know.

There's also the whole debate about whether it's game-breaking, but I won't really get into that. MH always had methods of quickly dispatching enemies, this one is just a little less complicated.

MH3U is pretty much the most perfect MH game to date, there's no reason to skip it, and most of us are coming from MH3. This is a sequel, not an improved port.

There are two all new big monster species, and a lot of monsters we haven't seen in any game released in the west in addition to the new subspecies.

Well by big I meant big big, as in the massive guys like Cea, Jhen, Alatreon, etc.

But yeah, all around this game has a lot more than Tri did. And a good chunk of it hasn't been seen outside Japan yet despite being in another game.

well game has the black 3DS XL + pre-installed game for £199

and amazon have it at £219?

is the amazon price likely to drop before release? as they are usually much cheaper than game? also i don't really want to support game as its a horrific company and a worse employer (i know there some great staff working there but thats no excuse :P)

Thread is pretty long so I apologize if this has been asked.

Can 2 Wii U's play together locally? My brother has a Wii U and 3DS, we have a Wii U and 3DS. If our wives want to play could we get a local game going comprised of two Wii U's and two 3DS's?

Wii U's can't play locally. You can play locally with 4 3DS's or 1 Wii U and 3 3DS's.

I don't count Alatreon among those, at his core he's pretty much just a fancy Kushala Daora. Which is a hell of a lot more interesting than the big guys honestly, I find those fights boring and very annoying online trying to teach people the specific methods you need to use. I don't know anything about this new one but I'd like if he was a bit more interesting than the big punching bags, as cool as the fights look.

Still boggles my mind that NA never got portable 3rd. But a lot of the new fights are really solid like Dobo and Jinouga so anything to give a better impression to new players is welcome.

I want this game but I'm not sure if I want it. Does this game have a story or do I just hunt monsters for bounty? Can I play single player only and enjoy it? Never played before in my life.

what site is he pre-ordering on?
Not Monster Hunter, but Newegg has a $30 off + Free Shipping promotion for the 3DS XL right now.
Yeah, the press release never outright rules it out... I would imagine it's possible since they're using the same wireless protocol.
That's why I'm asking. I would think the Wii U isn't looking for 3DS's specifically, just other devices in the same area on the same protocol.

If it has been confirmed this doesn't work can somebody link me to where that was? I've done some Google searching and can't find anything. I'd like to save my brother some money if possible.

There's a singleplayer with a rudimentary story, but that story is basically 'there are monsters, you're a hunter, go do your damn job and hunt them to get stuff to hunt better monsters'. Which is all it needs.

I played MHF2 and MHFU for upwards of 500 hours solo before I ever even tried multiplayer. So yes, it's just fine solo if the game clicks with you. But MH is not a series for everyone and the learning curve is steeper solo than online. I will say that I actually prefer soloing in a lot of ways since I can control the fight better, but online is still tons of fun with a good group. It's just different.

Doesn't sound too bad. Hopefully they release a demo for the Wii U since I don't have a 3DS anymore.

The demo won't have any part of the "story" in it. People always say Monster Hunter doesn't have any story to it and that it doesn't need one. Tri was my first MH game and I was actually pleasantly surprised by the story it did have. It was fun, cute, flirty, funny, macho, heart warming, etc. It's not going to win any awards for the story it tells, but to say it doesn't have a story doesn't make sense to me.

I guess I never understood why people always say it doesn't have a story when it had a nice one in my opinion. If you just play online then there is no story, you just meet up with other players and hunt and craft, etc. But the offline single player definitely has a story. It has plenty of characters, it has emotion, it has a plot, it has a beginning, middle, a climax, and conclusion.

When people complain about the lack of story, I think it really means that they want the story to obtrusively make its presence known via highly frequent cinematics possibly with overwrought music and a frequently employed conversation system that lets you make a heroic reply versus an asshole reply.

For owners of the Japanese version, MH3U is getting updated with voice chat, usb keyboard support and ZL/ZR button setting toggles tomorrow! :)
Good to see that the JPN gets those patched in.

Is the voice chat functionality all or nothing within a group? Say I'm hunting with one friend and two strangers. Can I open up voice chat with just my friend if I choose or does everyone in the group hear the chat (provided the other party has voice chat activated)?

No one knows until its tested :/

edit: derp, patch is today lol

Also, fair warning to those trying out the demo: if Tri's demo is any indication, it is not indicative of the difficulty level of the final product. The equipment presets and shortened time limit probably makes it harder than it should, especially for beginners. Don't be disheartened if you can't complete it.

even as a long-time player I always disliked things like training missions where you're forced into a certain weapon/armor setup. It always gives you things like crap sharpness weapons or useless skills.

I mean, I don't even use certain weapons if I don't have the right skills to back them up, especially greatswords and heavy bowguns. I can use hammers naked but even then I generally want at least earplugs.
