Just tried sword and shield and longsword with the Lagombi.
SnS fits my playstyle better, but I didn't dislike longsword either.

So, I'm not that good of a MH player (Barioth was my wall in Tri), but it seems to me that the 12 weapons in 3U can be split into 5 groups:
1. Long Slashing weapons: Longsword, Switch Axe, and Great Sword. Good vertical reach, good-great attack power, generally poor defensive abilities, bad-decent movement speed.
2. Short Slashing weapons: Sword and Shield, Dual Blades. Poor vertical reach, quick weak attacks, good status/element options, good movement speed.
3. Smashing weapons: Hunting Horn, Hammer. Only real way to inflict smashing damage. Every hunting party should have at least one.
4. Lance weapons: Lance, Gunlance. Primarily thrusting attacks (slashing damage), slow but shields can stop most attacks, "tank"-like weapons.
5. Ranged weapons: Bow, Light Bowgun, Heavy Bowgun. Ranged, obviously, ammunition/coatings make them very versatile.
Or am I way off base here? (I'm kinda planning to pick one of every group to practice with.)
i have one question to the people with the wiiU: do i get the sound of the game out of the headphone out on the gamepad even if im using the pro controller?
Does the main game give you enough Zelda-like intro? Does it walk you through how to use these weapons and portions? Or are you on your own? Anything besides killing monsters? Is the payoff just looting? Anyway to figure out how to attack these guys besides trial and error? What happens if you die? Restart from a certain spot or do you lose your gear?

It's okay to try to group them together, I guess. But the weapons share characteristics in a way that it would make it difficult to not have overlap. I'd say that it's easy to just look at the pros/cons of each separately since you can to learn each separately, i.e. grouping certain weapons doesn't make learning those weapons together any easier.
Well, lances/gunlances and HH/hammer are very different from each other. The movesets share very little.
LS and switch axe are kinda similar in their basic roles, but GS is nothing like those. LS isn't slow at all and is extremely mobile.
LBG and HBG can be used pretty similarly, biggest differences being rapid fire vs shields and crouching fire. Bows on the other hand need to be used practically in melee range, which offsets how safe they are.
I've been trying to figure this out. In the demo, the only sounds I can get out of the gamepad are things like the warning noise when a trap is dropped. The kind of stuff you'd expect to hear out of a wiimote, basically.
However I would be extremely surprised if there was no option in the full version to route all game sound to the gamepad headphone output, like say Zombi U has. But I haven't been able to find anyone who has the Japanese version to answer my question. I made threads on gamefaqs and capcom unity as well with no answer.
The lance is actually unique in MH in that it's attacks will automatically be either "cutting" or "impact" damage depending on the area of the monster you hit. It will pick the type of damage that is more effective on that area.4. Lance weapons: Lance, Gunlance. Primarily thrusting attacks (slashing damage), slow but shields can stop most attacks, "tank"-like weapons.
I was grouping them together more in terms of what they're good for, not as much how they play. I was planning to pick one from each group to practice with so that I'd have a type of weapon for each kind of "role".
Or maybe I'm thinking of this a little too much like a MMORPG (I know it's not one, btw), where parties are more effective if they are balanced.

It won't teach you how to fight, but you learn how to carve, mix and gather items.Does the main game give you enough Zelda-like intro? Does it walk you through how to use these weapons and portions? brofistI killed him with sword and shield as well. I am just saying what was the easiest and quickest for me.
I also think all the ranged weapons are not for me. Except the gun lance if you want to count that as a ranged weapon. I also really dislike the hunting horn.
You can't cut Plesioth tail, you can only break its head, fins and wings.
You can help break Uragaan tail, but you need a sword, lance (slash weapons) or whatever to cut it.
I've been feeling so much more comfortable with the switchaxe now that I've been practicing. It's incredible to feel yourself growing closer and closer in "kinship" with your weapon as you use it. Hopefully I'll be allowed to stick with it in the main game.
Damm all those multiple wasted quests trying to hack of his tail lol.... -_-
Could you cut his tail in previous games (Only other MH game i've played is Tri)?
I just downloaded the demo but apparently you need to see the main screen (TV) to get it going... I was looking forward to trying it out while the wife watched tv... :-|
I really don't understand why they took the dive up/down off ZR and ZL on the wii u and presumably frankenstick 3DS. Underwater combat is still easier just because of the camera lock thing, but still. Is there some weird button combo to let me underwater dodge straight up and down? I used that a lot.
no, offscreen play is exclusive to 3DS.

Can't get into the ranged weapons at all. Aiming is extremely clunky with the bowguns and the horn is a support weapon with a limited attacking moveset, so it's useless for solo play (I'm generally not a fan of depending on other people). The bow is nice because you can stay mobile and aim quickly, but I'm fairly certain its damage output can't even begin to keep up with melee weapons wielded properly.
The gunlance I like, but as you point out it's not really a ranged weapon, only effective point-blank.
only played a few times since the demo came out but have been busy with projects
seems like a steep learning curve so far I am getting killed on the easy guy![]()
May be an obvious question: but is the new classic controller pro compatible with this game?
Considering picking one up when I purchase MHU.
oooh, going to try that later.PSA: If you're playing on Wii U, using the Gamepad, CC Pro, or Wii U ProCon, ZR toggles monster look on/off.

it supports the old classic controller and its pro variant, as well as the wii u pro controller. I just haven't tried my CCP yet because I can't find a wiimote to plug it in.
Also I pictured myself trying to play this online with a gamepad, usb keyboard, headphones and wiimote + CCP sprawled out in front of me and decided that maybe I should just keep it simple. I'm having no trouble just using the gamepad.

Oh and I also quite enjoyed the long sword. That together with he switch axe are my favorites right now.

The Kelbi Bow is actually the most powerful weapon in MH3U as far as I know.brofist

Nope, no gunlance in Tri. No dual swords, hunting horn or bow, either.I cant wait for this game to be released. Its going to blow a little life into the WiiU. Only problem now is affording all games being released the coming months
So far the gunlance is the most fun to play with. Was it in the Wii version? I bought Tri so I could "demo" it befor the demo came and I don't remember seeing it.
Edit: first post wooohooo hey guys!
You can beat the game with every weapon class, and S&S is very easy to use so it's a recommended weapon for newcomers. It's also the only weapon in the game that allows you to use items with the weapon drawn, which can be very helpful (especially when playing solo). You'll rarely see high level players using them because the damage output simply isn't all that great, neither is the range, and if you know how to dodge, the shield doesn't make up for the low damage and range anymore.what's GAF's opinion on the sword & shield? its by far my favorite weapon to use in the demo, but i've heard some mixed impressions on it.
despite it being my favorite weapon, i've tried a lot of things but i just cannot kill the plesioth with the sword & shield (either i die or i run out of time). how feasible is it to use the weapon throughout the duration of the full game?

there's a learning curve, for sure
just take things slow, play conservatively, focus on dodging and staying alive with attacking as a second priority
study the monster as you fight, learn their attacks and attack ranges, their tells, their animations, and you'll get there![]()

Do you start off with a regular character, or do you select a class/weapon class at the start of the game? Meaning you cannot switch weapons at all?I've been trying to figure this out. You never lose any gear, you can die 3 times in a quest before it's over but you lose a bit of money reward each time. If you wasted a lot of resources you can just choose not to save afterwards. Oh also, 'dying' just means some cats come and recover your unconscious body and dump you back at the camp.
The payoff is the feeling of taking down a monster, but building up your gear is the primary goal. Not sure what else you're looking for, there is a rudimentary singleplayer storyline.
There's always youtube. There is a very dedicated MH community that posts tutorials for...everything. Expect monster damage charts and the like to go up on gamefaqs rather quickly.
I'm not sure about Ultimate but Tri started off very, very slowly. Obnoxiously slowly. It goes through gathering and item usage pretty well, but for using the weapons the best way to learn is practice.
