Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate - Demo out [Updated: FAQ and Help]

I did dodge and tried to learn patterns, but camera screwed me :(
But I'm unsure of where the fun is with the limited moves, or I'm missing something. Are monsters damage sponges? Do they restore their health if I die? Is there a way to see their health bar or you're supposed to be blind?

Also, I suppose getting a better weapon isn't on the table in this demo.

Yeah that's what seemed appealing to me when I read about the game. I guess the demo just tries to show you the hunt.

One thing you have to consider about the camera is that everytime you are going to attack it's best if you recenter it towards the monster, so in this game remember to move the camera every little after an attack. I think my first mistake when playing the game was not moving the camera at all and missing a lot of attacks.

And enemies are very tough so keep on attacking and dodging and you will notice that its stamina is decreasing. When they start limping and dripping saliva you are not far from finishing it.

So do you just fight one monster at a time in this? What gives the game depth?

The monsters have tons of 'personality' and quirks that you learn over time in addition to their large movesets. Where they retreat when they're wounded, what weapons and elements they are vulnerable to, etc. It's a great feeling taking that monster down the first time in an intense struggle, but it's just as good when you come back and completely dominate that same monster with superior knowledge, perparation and tactics.

And of course there are the times where you AREN'T just fighting one monster. There's one who specializes in calling other monsters to come and murder you, and there's a particularly infamous species that will just wander into your quests and crash your party.

It's actually just hitting me how catastrophically disastrous it is that the 3DS lacks online functionality, it's perhaps one of the worst business moves I have ever seen in this industry.

There are always hurdles this series fails to cross, no matter how close to the finish line Capcpom are I always feel this series will fail in the west if they don't get their shit together and launch the full product.

Downloading the demo when I get home. Going to be my first Monster Hunter – hopefully I'll be able to get in with the GAF community when the full version comes out.

Depth is how you deal with all monsters with all weapon types. The customization is also pretty good and is kinda like a puzzle game since you have to mix and match armor pieces to get the effects you want.

You sometimes have to fight more than one big monster at once which is very difficult.

I searched for it in the 3DS shop. All that shows up on the bottom screen is the trailer and details but the top screen shows an image that says "game demo available." Grr.

No, this is only a demo and there's plenty of monsters roaming around randomly in the actual game, besides there's a lot of depth in the game but not necessarily linked to the numbers of monsters on screen, you may find a lot of depth even in a single boss fight.

I've just tried the WiiU demo. It's not very good is it. Am I missing something?

Yep, often you wish all you had to do was fight one monster.

Getting sandwiched between a rathalos and a rathian should be a rite of passage for all people that play games.

The depth comes from weapon selection. Skills/abilities granted by armour you're wearing. The variety of monsters available to hunt. AND...your own improvement at the game. A monster that killed you in nine seconds and you never had a chance against will eventually be a monster that you put on farm and know what it's going to do before it does it.

The dynamics of the fight. The endless ways to kill it, and kill it better. Sometimes you fight more than one, though.

Thanks guys.

So, Dark Souls-like as far as the depth of the fights? lots of trial and error?

Wow, Plesioth really raped me. I'm doing just fine when he is on the land, but when in water? Oh god.

Also, how to deal with its tail attack? Can I block it?

Is it possible to change the button layout in the final version? Running with the R button on the gamepad is just annoying when I prefer ZL. Same goes for attacking, I prefer the Y button instead of X.

Thanks guys.

Personally, I think the combat is deeper than Souls games. Souls doesn't consider which part of the enemy gets hit.

Does the demo give you Sonic Bombs? You can force him out of the water with those.

Thanks guys.

I guess you could say that? The monsters in MH tend to be a lot more complex than your average Souls entity, especially with regards to how important body parts are, and even the subspecies of the same monster can offer up some big differences that require new strategies.

Always hated the plesioth, since the first time I fought him on the PSP, quite surprised I managed to kill him first time after not playing for a while. Any ideas what the special attack button is for on the touchscreen?

I haven't tried the demo yet.

But if you're new...and it seems as though you are...Monster Hunter demos are rarely compelling.

The joy of the game comes from learning the game. Learning the maps and knowing when and where to attack what you're hunting. Learning the monsters, their behaviour and their weaknesses.

Monster Hunter instills a genuine feeling in the player that they are indeed improving and getting better. It's not just that the gear you create is more powerful. It's the fact that you are becoming a more savvy hunter.

it's fucking brilliant and you WON'T get that from a demo. You can't. Demos are fine but it really doesn't show off what I believe to be any of the strengths that Monster Hunter has.

What do you don't like about it? Maybe someone can help you get into the game. Or probably you are the type that has more fun while playing online with others.

I guess:-

a) I don't understand what I'm meant to be doing?
b) I'm trying to play it like Darksiders
c) Who are those two helpers with me. What can I make them do?

Thanks. Sounds like a deep game. I'll keep persevering with the demo.

Shame about the 30 try limit again :(

So true!

Getting sandwiched between a rathalos and a rathian should be a rite of passage for all people that play games.

For me playing Tri it was fighting against Rathalos(or it was a Great Baggi or Qurupeco, it was the first map though) and having to run away from Lagiacrus at the same time, since it was beyond my reach given my weapons/armourset/skills.

Another annoying one is that bloody Qurupeco, always yelling for help.

Kill the big giant monster.

b) I'm trying to play it like Darksiders

It's not Darksiders.

Play it like you're a novice hunter of monsters...which you are. Your fear will serve you well. In time...you will get more confident and attack more and dodge/avoid/get killed less.

c) Who are those two helpers with me. What can I make them do?

They're your helpers but until you understand the context and learn what they do...and in past games you can't MAKE them do anything. You can only give them skills that they may or may not use at seemingly random...so...ignore them. Focus on the monster.

Thanks guys.

I suppose. If you go and fight those wyverns in the valley of drakes with a heavy weapon and no lock on, that's pretty Monster Hunter right there (just pretend they only take appreciable damage if you hit the head). I'd say they are most similar in that they reward patience and caution. But MH is all about hitting the right location on top of making sure you only attack when it's safe. I honestly think Souls fans will feel at home with MH even though the games are very different.

Thanks bigdaddygamebo. I'll take my time and upgrade slowly then.

Thanks for your valuable input.
You are welcome.

Just keep trying the demo, force yourself to like it, you won't regret. You don't start a MH game killing bosses left and right, dying is part of the experience. You need to learn how to use your weapon of choice, and how monsters move around.

I have been playing games for a long fucking time. I'll be turning forty this year and very few games give me a sense of actually accomplishing something.

Monster Hunter is one of those very few games however.

This isn't a whole "wrestling is real to me" post.

I'm very much a guy that enjoys it when a game puts me to task. Monster Hunter will do that.

I started with lances and gun lances back in the day. Not the most dynamic style of play but the shields WILL protect you and give you a chance to learn the behaviour of the monsters you're hunting.

Part of the joy of Monster Hunter is going in with no information and learning the game just from what the game provides in the way of tutorials but moreso...what you learn from exploration and trial and error.

Play the game like Punch Out, not Darksiders.

Depending on what AI routine you set your helpers as (not sure if that's in the demo), they can attack the monster, set bombs, heal you, and do other various things. They also help distract the monster away from you.

Do you mean the 3DS version? The console itself is more than capable of doing MonHun online.

I love Qurupeco!

He's such a sneaky little prick!

Rathalos appearing is always memorable. I remember playing Tri with my nephews and we were hunting a Great Baggi and a Rathalos landed. They lost their minds. It was brilliant.

How do you know what an animal's weakspot is? I would assume it would always be the head? That giant rabbit's tummy looks very tempting to my big pointy sword though. Also, I'm guessing they have no health meter?
