Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate - Demo out [Updated: FAQ and Help]

Will the sound be better in the final game?
It sounds very flat to me. Very lacking. The weapons make almost no noise etc...

I'm having a fucking blast with the demo. I hate the slower classes so far, though. Are they balanced out so that they do more damage (seems logical)

I can actually see this being the first demo where I run out of amount of playsessions.

Yep. My fastest kill times are with the great sword and the hammer because I feel most comfortable with them and they deal a lot of damage.

Personally I have most fun with the heavy, slower weapons. I love the feeling of delivering a particularly powerful blow that knocks the shit out of the creature, and the final blow of the fight always feels sweeter that way.

Siege Mode is not really useful, is it?

I hope there's a Clust Siege because that's the only way I see myself using a Heavy Bowgun.

I mean... Normal and Poison shots? Ain't nobody here for that.

I didn't even know what that was until you mentioned it since I never touched them in portable 3rd. Should've read the manual!

I'm watching a random HBG video from p3rd and he has fire ammo available in siege mode, if I had that or thunder s against Plesioth in the demo he'd pretty much be dead as soon as I got him tired and in a trap. A second video shows what appears to be a guy using pellet on zinogre. Dobo (or whatever he's called now, hammer tail monster) seems like he'd be super easy with siege mode.

Considering I used to abuse the hell out of autoreload in MHFU I could see myself picking up HBG again for certain fights. After hundreds of hours spent hammering in Tri I could use a change of pace, but I'll never main bowguns.

The fastest kill times are usually with the slower weapons (Hammer, GS, HBG, Lance), but it takes a lot of skill and some luck to accomplish. It's not always the case though. It really depends on the monster.

I think rapidfire is preferable to autoreload, though, given that they don't work with each other. You get more mileage out of your elemental ammo.

against dual gravios or something definitely. But plesioth has two weaknesses, so even the g-rank one would be dead long before I ran out of fire and thunder. I only used bowguns for specific monsters - I don't think I ever even made an LBG, and HBG can't rapid fire.

Man I'm gonna miss screenshots. Unless Wii U can do that, I just got the thing so I don't know anything about it.

So I gave in and picked my old copy of portable 3rd psp back up. Hoping I can get better at some of the monsters so no one yells at me for being a bad tank. =P

I beat Diablos on my first try! =D no deaths!

does the wii u version have local multiplayer? I dont mean with another 3ds but 2 players (or more) on the same wii u ... like 1 player on the tv and the other on the gamepad.

So after playing the demo for 6 hours and trying all weapons, I can say I'm gonna use Great Sword, Hammer, Gun Lance, Light Bowgun and Bow.

Gonna focus on Gun Lance and Bow.

Hunting Horn is cool but I don't like to perform songs, especially not twice in a row.

Hi everyone ! I heard it was possible to cut parts in previous Monster Hunters, like tails. Is it possible in MH3U ?

Yep. You can cut tails and break body parts like their heads (a horn can break off if they have them). These broken/cut parts give special loot that can be required to make an armor set from that specific monster.
I don't know if Plesioth's tail can be cut off though.

Never played hammer before, so now I'm wondering whether you can even cut a tail with it.

Nope! I don't think you can even do off-TV play. =/

Yes! It depends on the monster. You can cut tails off some and carve them, and there are plenty of monsters that you can break parts of. For instance, hit the bunny's ears enough and they break. This gives you different drops at the end of a quest.

You can't. If you could there would be no reason for the other weapons existance.

Yes. You can generally cut/break off tails, horns/tusks, parts of wings, and in some cases, face, chest, and back spikes. Although, you naturally won't be able to use the hammer to break off a monster's tail, and the short weapons like the sword and shield generally have a hard time reaching to cut some body parts such as the tail (due to how tall some of the monsters are) among other things. some monsters can't have their tails cut off such as Great Jaggi, Great Baggi, Gigginox, and Jhen Mohran.

By the way, some weapons are more effective at causing cutting or smash damage depending on what monster you're fighting. For example, a blade-based weapon is gonna have a harder time breaking Uraggan's chin, where as a hammer would be the ideal weapon to use. Lastly, some weapons can be easier to use against certain monsters to cut off body parts. For example, the switch axe can more easily hit Deviljho's tail while he's moving compared to a say, a great sword.

You can't cut Plesioth tail, you can only break its head, fins and wings.

I heard that one of the rock monsters can get his tail cut off only by a hammer, but I don't know if it was true.
You can help break Uragaan tail, but you need a sword, lance (slash weapons) or whatever to cut it.

To all noobs I recommend the hammer. Lots of power and mobility. Basically just run around with the R button charge and wait for an opening, make sure youre not moving when you release it so you do the big pound (BIG damage) instead of the spin move (no damage). With your weapon sheathed if you press both attack buttons plus R at the same time, youll go straight into a charge position. Imcredibly useful.

Flow of combat should revolve around getting an opening, do the big pound, roll out of the way right after and repeat. If you have a big opening, after the big pound, cancel out of it with a roll and do the triple pound move right after.

Weapons like sword and shield and dual blades are great, but I dont think theyre beginner friendly because usually the big issue new players have is being able to hit things. Those weapons commit to fast combos and its easy to miss your target, plus they do low damage per hit. Love the bow as well, but it does low damage and unless you have some good stats like poison, fights will drag out. Great Sword does as much damage as the hammer, but its not nearly as mobile because with the hammer you can run around while charging.

Man I have tried killing the Lagombi twice with the bow and I just can#t do it. The time always runs out for me. The switch axe was probably the easiest for me, together with the hammer and the great sword.

Lagombi was kinda easy with Sword and Shield.
Just attack then dodge etc...

I killed him with sword and shield as well. I am just saying what was the easiest and quickest for me.

I also think all the ranged weapons are not for me. Except the gun lance if you want to count that as a ranged weapon. I also really dislike the hunting horn.

What are your guys thoughts on the bow? I tried it for the first time ever and thought it was kind of fun. I usually don't use any kind of long range weapon at all, but applying the different coatings and trying to headshot as much as possible was cool.

Well I like the bow more than the bow guns but I just can't do enough damage with it.

Gunlance feels a lot better than it was the last time I touched it in MHFU. Meaning, It went from being a horrible slow and weak piece of junk to something I might actually use when I'm bored.

Regular lance...not feeling it. I'm probably the only person who didn't like it in Tri where it was overpowered, and the nerfs didn't help. I don't know why I liked it better in MHFU than Tri, I just did. Still beat Plesioth with it, wasn't that hard.

Longswords seem to have been brought back down to just above where they were in FU. You still have the sideways dodge slashes but R isn't as ridiculous. So maybe XxLonehuntaxX won't be spamming it on us so hard online anymore.

Tried out dual swords as well, anything is better than 'mega juice and spam demonize' but I'm not really sure what the hell was going on with the new moveset(s?). At any rate I obliterated lagombi extremely fast with them so they are pretty good now, I guess? I'm liking the quick side dodges you can do mid-combo.

Fought Plessy a couple times with HBG and man...siege mo-er, 'crouching fire' gets the job done. Tire him out, get him in the trap, then blast him with normal 3. It runs out just as the trap ends. Likewise, it takes 2 shots of poison the first time and 4 the second. Crouching fire poison S has 4 shots in the magazine, which works out perfectly. I'd still rather have something that can use fire and thunder in that mode, I bet it'd be incredible online with people to distract and stun/paralyze the monster.

As great as massacring the monsters in this demo with these powerful weapons and armor is, I'm looking forward to working my way up from scratch again. Constant sharpening of weak weapons, default HP, making every dodge count, managing your loot.

Some of you aren't liking it when the monsters flee to other zones? Let's see how you like it when you're the one that has to run to restock on herbs and honey.

So, I'm not that good of a MH player (Barioth was my wall in Tri), but it seems to me that the 12 weapons in 3U can be split into 5 groups:

1. Long Slashing weapons: Longsword, Switch Axe, and Great Sword. Good vertical reach, good-great attack power, generally poor defensive abilities, bad-decent movement speed.

2. Short Slashing weapons: Sword and Shield, Dual Blades. Poor vertical reach, quick weak attacks, good status/element options, good movement speed.

3. Smashing weapons: Hunting Horn, Hammer. Only real way to inflict smashing damage. Every hunting party should have at least one.

4. Lance weapons: Lance, Gunlance. Primarily thrusting attacks (slashing damage), slow but shields can stop most attacks, "tank"-like weapons.

5. Ranged weapons: Bow, Light Bowgun, Heavy Bowgun. Ranged, obviously, ammunition/coatings make them very versatile.

Or am I way off base here? (I'm kinda planning to pick one of every group to practice with.)

It's okay to try to group them together, I guess. But the weapons share characteristics in a way that it would make it difficult to not have overlap. I'd say that it's easy to just look at the pros/cons of each separately since you can to learn each separately, i.e. grouping certain weapons doesn't make learning those weapons together any easier.
