Is there a solid plot in this game?

Here's the plot: You're a hunter in a village and that is your job. Hunt for food and materials for the whole community for daily use (and protect it) or the cats will kick you out.

Hahaha! I would love if the game had a game-over screen like that!

I'm like a Hadouken, down-right Fierce!
Got to HR2 with johntv and sp0rsk last night, it was good fun:lol We rocked that Gigginox silly three straight times.:lol

Any suggestions for an armor set for a long sword user? I read online that the Gigginox armor set has lightning resistance which would help against Jinouga

Barroth has lightning resistance too. But it's skill set is meant for weapons with a shield,so if you're good with lance/gunlance/SnS/HBG,it's perfect to use.

Got any good lance skill vids from MH3 to share? I'm still stumbling around with it, but I want to see what the shield bash and counter moves are capable of!
There are but they contained way too much spoilers. Some tips:

Shield Bash - Able to bash through every move (not sure if they change anything from MH3) and causes KO effect if hit on the head
Counter - Not able to counter every move but able to counter sound and tremble

Anybody can give me a rundown for switchaxe combos? I can't seem to use it properly.

Now you can cancel the axe mad swing to a chop and carry on the combo chain. One of the key move for slash axe is the rolling slash. Just do a roll in sword mode and press Triangle.

Am not a full set person but I can recommend some skills for long sword.

Focus is a key skill for Long sword as it helps to build up the spirit gauge fast. Ear plug and tremble helps too as you can build up the gauge without those moves affecting you. Maybe you can focus on a armor set with the above skills set?

Hmm... How do I get my Felyne companion? I unfortunately cannot read Japanese so I don't really know what I need to do and I haven't found any information on any Wiki :( Is there a certain requirement I need to fulfill?

Talk to her and pick your Felyne.

Thank you :)

I have yet another question though, is there a way to put them to use on the Farm somehow? :)

I think I just unlocked some sort of cart, you can send your cats on gathering missions. The quality of items is probably tied to their current Lvl.

The difficulty curve in 3RD seems much more gradual than the first MHP, although that probably also has to do with me having played hundreds of hours with previous games.

Surprisingly playable without knowing Japanese, now if only I could find the farm! ha

It is easier.

  • Recovery times are shorter.
  • You can recover from knockdowns.
  • HP values are lower than usual.
  • The minion monster AI is less aggressive.
  • The cat support is better than ever(x2).
  • Boss AI is now governed and limited by stamina.

I figure they're saving the hard stuff for P3G

Nice, what quest did you complete to get the cart?

Also, I'm trying to do a drink quest that requires 15 Unique Mushrooms to be completed.
Problem is that I only seem to be able to harvest each node once, which doesn't give me near enough shrooms :( Do they respawn after a certain time or what gives?

Yes!I knew something was wrong when I'm slaying monsters faster than usual.

For me it's pretty darn great that it starts out easier then usual as I'm playing a Gunner for the first time : o

Also, here's a nice wiki I've been using:
http://www.mhf3.com/

Used this one for Tri:
http://monsterhunter.wikia.com/wiki/Monster_Hunter_Wiki

But the Wikia hasn't been updated a lot since MHP3 so I'm going with MHF3.com wiki right now, also I think they present their info a bit better with icons and everything :) Makes it easier to find what you're looking for.

I think the knockdown/sliding backwards on both feet animation is a little too common.. it shouldn't happen ALL the time.

The Switch Axe is really badass.. so much fun!

And encountering three large monsters in a single quest is so cool! Yay!

The environment graphics are really polished, and I am noticing a total lack of dithering.. although that might be my total fanboy excitement towards this game. Seeing a flock of birds fly by is such a cool effect. They perfected the Jurassic Park opening sequence homage.

Wish the game had more flying wyverns early on... that's what symbolizes the game to me.

Spindoc are you still using xlink Kai? I guess I should try to set it up again..

Strange,I'm getting more normal knockdowns than the sliding animations,I guess depends how severe is the attack but boy Capcom sure love it's sliding animation since they did the same for DMC4.

I believe the cart unlocked for me when
I beat the 2nd urgent village quest; in other words, when I began to be able to choose 3 star quests.

For mushroom quests, there are usually some bugs that usually travel in threes that tend to go to the mushroom points (and a few other places like beehive/honey points), When the insects get there, after a second or so their abdomens (correct word?) swell up. After that, if you kill them, they leave a sparking light that you can pick up, and you can grab whatever it was they ate. You can get things through the bugs even from places you already 'exhausted' from gathering.

I'm not entirely sure if its random or if its when I hit the R shoulder at the right point (before my character hits the ground).

They perfected the Jurassic Park opening sequence homage.

The first area in Flooded area/forest, reminds me so much of The End river sequence from MGS3. It's probably just my imagination, but the MGS tie-in just makes it seem more plausible.

I still have my USB dongle, but my current internet situation is awful, I'm stuck with latencies over >500ms. Nothing is playable online, save for turn based games.

It's better then getting knocked back and rolling all over the place for five minutes.

Ah ok.

The first part of the lance shield bash is really amazing. It allows for you to close the distance with a wyvern, even if they're in mid-attack. You can charge into tail swipes, rushes and all sorts of attacks. And it's very safe, your guard doesn't drop at any point. Perfect for setting yourself up in a good position to launch a combo. Haven't tested it with wind knockback, but I hope it'll be just as effective. This, coupled with the counter move have really shifted the lance from a defensive stance to one of the more aggressive options in MH.

One of the things that always annoyed me in Monster Hunter is how often skills overlap in usefulness. Sure, you don't want to build an armor skill that only works for one weapon, but then they go and make Focus, Ear plugs, and Tremor proof useful for every non-shield non-ammo weapon in the game, which is most of them. The balance is a bit better in 3rd, at least.

I was almost dealing the finishing blow, but was on fire so rapidly losing health. I reach for my last potion and select it in my inventory.. right at that moment a black cat comes up, grabs it out of my hands and disappears.

I die.

Shield bash is a god tier move:D

And OMG what have they changed to lance? They removed the ability to counter after the 3rd poke and added in the ability to combo back/side step 3 FUCKING TIMES IN A ROLL after a hit! 1 extra more than light bow gun! I think with Evade Distance, Evade +2, Constitution +2 or Mega Dash Juice, the lance will once again be the strongest weapon in MHP3rd.

Mother of God. I was a little skeptical with the removal of the counter after the third poke but the 3 side/back steps should step Lance's game up.

I think the cats in single player are too uh, spammy. They need to give them limited lives per mission, like the player.

Also they shouldn't bury in/out of the ground so often when you are travelling, so annoying. It's funny how they actually alert monsters with their sound, when you are trying to be sneaky.

I think the 3 step was introduced in MHP2. Evade Distance+ works wonders with it. Perfect for quickly flanking wyverns without sheathing your weapon :)

I believe they only had one hop in MHF1. One lousy hop!

Yeah, I picked up on this as well. Still, you could always opt to leave them at the village.

Um, thanks, I knew *of* it, but didn't know about how great it was... I gave it a look and thought "oh.. its not even an attack" and promptly had forgotten about it, not having noticed the bit about attacks not hurting you during it. Just started using it ^^.

Edit: Oh, and just now saw the bit about the KO effect if you hit them on the head o_O

Shield bash substitute for blocks? Whoa. o.o

Lancing just became 10x funner. It's a pity agrolancing isn't really viable anymore.

I am disappointed in you for not knowing that..

Regarding shield bash:
Some moves like Jho's dragon breath push you back when you block, but with shield bash you can actually go forward without any knockback or +guard skills.

You haven't experienced Monster Hunter madness if you haven't had a moment with 4 shield bashing lancers vs Jho's dragon breath.

Are any of you using the DS? From what I've seen in the demo, that weapon for the coolest changes. Demonize and undemonize mid-combo, forward & side dashes (using demon meter if not demonized), slightly different combos in demon mode. It's a tactical balance between charging meter and recovering stamina. But you know how you sometimes run out of stamina while in demon mode? Instead of getting stuck there after the last hit of your combo, you're allowed to undemonize at the end, continue combo'ing and then still dash when your stamina recovers.

Alright MonHun GAF I need your help. I am an idiot and even though I tried to convince myself not to order this game (due to jack of Japanese knowledge on my part) I went ahead and did it anyway in hopes someone will do an english patch for it soon. Anyway, it showed up today and after fiddling around in it for about 30 min I found the tutorial quests. I have done quite a few of them. Do I have to do all of the tutorial quests before I can get regular quests? I have gone to (what I am presuming) is the guild building, but I haven't been able to select any quests. So what's up, am I just missing something super obvious. Keep in mind I have only played about an hours worth Monster Hunter prior to this game so that probably isn't helping out with comprehension either.

Talk to the fancy-looking chick in pink in the main hub area; that's where you get your single-player quests from.

Also it might have been a good idea to cut your teeth on another Monster Hunter game before trying to play J-3rd, as familiarity with stuff like menu conventions and item icons helps a lot to mitigate the language barrier.

Yeah, I am still planning on picking up the english version of Tri. But I got a little spare cash as a gift so I figured I would splurge. And to be fair I probably shorted myself a bit as far as my experience with the game goes. I watched a buddy of mine play like 4 hours of Tri so I have a decent idea of the basic structure at the very least.

Edit: Also, thank god this game has a lot of icons that correspond to items or else I would be really screwed.:lol
