As the standard order, many burritos and burrito bowls alone are 900-1000 calories. If you get sides you are already dead. http://www.nytimes.com/interactive/2015/02/17/upshot/what-do-people-actually-order-at-chipotle.html

Calculate your gluttony meal nutrition here (but be aware it is inaccurate because it claims bowls and burritos get the same amount of food, which is not the case. Bowls are 50-70% more food by weight): https://chipotle.com/nutrition-calculator?_ga=1.36422499.252903107.1363474399

The typical order at Chipotle has about 1,070 calories.

The histogram above shows the distribution of calories for all orders. The spike around 1,000 calories represents “standard” burrito orders – a meat burrito with typical additions: cheese, salsa, lettuce, sour cream, rice and beans. If you order a meat burrito at Chipotle with these toppings, it’s very likely to reach 1,000 calories.

But there’s so much more to this data than the averages. Chipotle customers can and do order meals with fewer than 650 calories, such as a cheese-free burrito bowl. On the other end of the spectrum, about one in 10 meals had more than 1,600 calories.

Chipotle declined to give us data, but Mr. Arnold did give us a few facts about what people order, which broadly matched our data. The most common protein is chicken, Mr. Arnold said; the most common “vessel” is a burrito bowl rather than a burrito tortilla or taco; and the most common salsa is fresh tomato, he said. Using those examples, he cited a potential meal: a burrito bowl with white rice, black beans, chicken, fresh tomato salsa, sour cream and lettuce, which comes to about 625 calories.

About 90 percent of meals in our data set had more calories than that.

I'll be totally honest I found this article because I was curious and also skeptical of how many people tried to suggest Chipotle was healthy in the "anti-chipotle website" thread. Love the joint, but please stop giving America that much credit when it comes to ordering lunch.

You want to show us info that says everyone has healthy anecdotes like you to counter the info? Go for it. Don't come at me with a debunk attitude only supported by that "my wife eats half" "I can spread it over two days at my retreat this weekend" "chipotle is GMO-free but shit too" nonsense alone.

get a bowl and skip the sour cream and cheese, guac (they overcharge for that anyway). easy healthy meal.

but I understand that most people would get a fully loaded burrito.

Well. Who looks at a gigantic burrito from there and thinks for a second it's less than 1,200 calories and healthy?

Sounds about right. I usually only eat half a bowl for dinner and then the other half the next day. No way I can eat all of that in one sitting.

A chicken bowl without sour cream or guacamole was in the 650 calorie range - had that all the time. It's not like you get those sides for free either, so why are they included in every meal like they come with it for free?

we don't have chipotle but we have a few similar chains and honestly i just go occasionally for the glorious food diaper that is the fully loaded burrito.

it's great in a bowl as well but i'm quite aware a bowl of sour cream, cheese, guac, meat, rice, beans blah blah blah is too much consumption for a regular daily meal

Yeah, whenever I went to Chipotle for lunch I would just skip dinner altogether. The whole thing sits in the stomach for way too long.

? They use real data. There aren't sides with every meal in the data. Did you read it?

I only ever get a fajita bowl with rice, lettuce, tomatoes and guac. Some times I'll splurge and get medium salsa.

High on calories doesn't instantly equate to bad or unhealthy.

Would love to have a chipotle around here, would make hitting my macros way easier.

Calories of the meals or meal components.
As every restaurant should have to tbh

Can't say I agree with the "not meant for a single meal claim"

Saving half a burrito or a bowl when you didn't ask for a to go lid are likely not the most common acts... While it's not appropriate portions for a single meal, it is frequently intended to be a single meal by customers.

I always get the carnita/barboca with extra meat, black beans, white rice, cheese, sour cream, fajita veggies, mild salsa

So how many calories am I consuming? D:

That's up to the individual person. I personally always ask for a to go box or lid at fastfood places regardless of whether or not I intended to eat it at the premises because I know I'll never finish my food.

The OP is cleverly ignoring that Chipotle doesn't add any GMO's or HFCS's to their foods. The calories you get are pure and unadulterated like cavemen would eat.

About 1250?

Carnitas salad with no beans or rice but with sour cream, guac, cheese and extra lettuce is about 750 calories.

Sub the guac for rice, beans, extra meat adds about 200(?) and an additional 300 calories for the tortilla?

What's up with NYT writing about Chipotle like on the clock? Did they screw up their lunch or what

Get chicken as your meat (or go veggie) and skip the cheese and sour cream. Bam, pretty healthy meal already. If you want to cut on carbs, get it in a bowl with smaller portions of rice and/or beans. How bad the meal is for you depends on what you ask for. It's actually a great place to go for either bulking or cutting/dieting if you're smart about it.

I've known forever about the fact that they're about 1000 calories each. If you have two meals a day and one is Chipotle, like it was for me often as a college student, you consume about 2000 calories.

And the type of calories matters. It's mostly fat and protein, and the carbs come from rice and tortilla, which isn't terrible. I guess if you're concerned about gaining weight it's not such a good idea. Lots of veggies in it too, black beans and avocado are healthy.

What's up with the hostile attitude in the OP anyway?

Kind of a "duh" article, its not like there aren't ways to eat a somewhat reasonable amount of calories at Chipotle, and they don't hide the calorie counts.

But when you become one of the bigger faces in the industry, people are going to set out to take you down, the way it is nowadays. Spurlock ruined McDonalds with his ridiculous documentary, maybe this is building up to having the chubby chipotle guy eating there everyday for a few months.

...and Chipotle burritos are small compared to most burritos you can find from Mexican places.

I can get two burritos that are much larger for the same price as one chipotle burrito at a local place. Vastly higher quality too. I wonder what the calorie count is.
