Mother Jones: "Romney Tells Millionaire Donors What He REALLY Thinks of Obama Voters"

There should never be a president who willfully dismisses the plight and lives of almost half of the country. This alone should sink him. We live together in a nation with an unspoken social contract that we take care of our "own" so that we all benefit. What the fuck is the point in supporting continuance of a nation if half of the country disregards basic survival needs of the other half?

Securing Enron's vote?

Are people really surprised by this? Isn't this what Republicans believed all along? Remember who Mitt is talking to, rich white republican men. Mitt is just feeding them what they want to hear. They got rich by working hard and the poor are poor because they are lazy and don't want to work etc.

The only difference is he actually expressed his opinion out loud.

Either way, I've never seen a Presidential nominee so out of touch with the general public... and I'm not even American.

Yep. I actually heard this EXACT same thing (including 47% pay no tax) from my ultra conservative father in law 4 years ago when Obama was 1st elected.

I'm not one for twitter, but there are some good ones:

David Roberts said:

Matt O'Brien said:
But what does Mitt Romney think of the people who don't pay ordinary income rates because of carried interest?

This actually was shocking for me because I thought my family was doing well. When my wife and I work, we pay taxes out the ass. But I'm reading that because we get a refund, we pay no income taxes. I'm guessing that building an interest free savings account over the course of a year is just a privilege we have.

Or not. I'm now really confused as to if we get a refund because we over pay. I need to find out if I'm a looter or producer.

but is he wrong?

edit* in saying that 47% of Americans are losers. Cause... I dunno, part of me would believe that.

He is, and he's made a serious mistake.

First: it's damaging because it isn't true. Exit polling from '08 showed that Obama's support cuts across economic classes, so he can't lay claim to the "53%" who pay income taxes as a natural constituency. The remaining "47%" are taxed in other ways - payroll and sales, for instance. So the idea that Obama voters are freeloaders that don't contribute to society is rather silly. And remember - the most expensive entitlements we have favor the old.

Second: It's downright offensive. Remember, Mitt Romney he pays a lower tax rate than many middle and working class Americans now. Under his tax plan, he'd pay even less.

Third: it's true that the "makers vs takers" dichotomy isn't a new meme on the right; after all, conservative commentators took to twitter today to praise him this afternoon so it might seem like this could only help him. I disagree. Romney clearly knows that such a candid take on events would work against him. I don't expect him to reconfigure his campaign around a message of class warfare. On the contrary, I fully expect him to walk this back over the coming days.

Fourth: This is Romney's "clinging to guns and religion moment," so to speak; it reveals a certain amount of contempt for a signifinant portion of the electorate. While that may play well on the right, it obviously won't on the left and probably won't in the middle. Again: If Romney didn't think this would hurt him, he would've said it in public several months ago.

FIfth: Tied to the points above, Romney is running for President of the United States. Not President of the 53% of voters who pay income tax.

I love seeing this cocksucker self destruct.

Good. Fuck you. Can't wait for him to get torn apart in the debates.

This was in npr's top of the hour news update.

It was funny they made sure to note that the video was "not independently verified" which is newsese for "yeah we also can't believe he'd be so stupid"

Krugman put it pretty well:

"Actually, if you look at the facts, you learn that the great bulk of those who pay no income tax pay other taxes; also, many of the people in the no-income-tax category are (a) elderly (b) students or (c) having a bad year, having lost a job — that is, they’re people who have paid income taxes in the past and/or will pay income taxes in the future. The idea that half of Americans are just grifters is grotesque."

Basically the class warfare is on.

I think it's funny that the artist felt the need to clarify who the fat fish represents

“Mitt Romney wants to help all Americans struggling in the Obama economy,” Romney communications director Gail Gitcho said. “As the governor has made clear all year, he is concerned about the growing number of people who are dependent on the federal government, including the record number of people who are on food stamps, nearly one in six Americans in poverty, and the 23 million Americans who are struggling to find work. Mitt Romney’s plan creates 12 million new jobs in four years, grows the economy and moves Americans off of government dependency and into jobs.”

In otherwords: a non-response response; [edit] but there may be a press conference incoming.

Per aide, at late night presser, Romney is likely to say that he wishes he had chosen his words more carefully... #Clearly

The thing about 47% of Americans not paying their income taxes is actually true, but not in the condescending tax-evasion way that the GOP and Romney imply that it is.

In 2009 something like 51% of Americans didn't owe] income tax. They didn't refuse to pay income taxes, they simply didn't have to. Something like 75% of those who don't pay income taxes are poor working families with children and the elderly who make enough in subsidies to not have to pay any income taxes. The other 25% are single people or couples who don't make enough money to have to pay income taxes.

They aren't avoiding taxes, they just don't have to pay them.

This is my source.

Yeah, it's like their stance on abortion and birth control - it makes Republican women wet to imagine Romney's bootheel on their necks.

Rhetoric like this will scare away Independents, but it's going to make his base cream themselves in misanthropic glee.

This is the stupidest part. The concept that all of these no income tax voters vote Democrat is laughable and shows a huge disconnect on Romney's part. There are millions of poor (especially in Red States) who vote Republican. It's an incredibly disingenuous statement.

There is a rumor flying about that Romney is recording a statement. It will not air live.

IMO: He will likely back down. A smarter politician - like, say, Newt - would play it hard and try to use it as a rallying cry.

Newt would say, "Did I fuckin' stutter?"

Romney, LOL.

Dreadful response.

Romney isn't even a political light weight. Hes a political ghost; sort of just wandering about endlessly making a bunch of scary noises, destined to haunt the political realms until such a day as he performs his final duty - to become President (likely helped by a local kid and his dog cat) at which point he'll just pass on into the next life, leaving everyone wondering who the hell is in charge of the country, President Romney (who has taken to signing bills as Gaius Baltar) or his 'hanger ons'.

The man doesn't exist, truly, in any political form. Theres no drive, just a trapped soul in need of feeling successful.

That response though. It doesn't deal with what was said, to any degree - in fact it plays into the idea that Romney is more ghoul, telling the Americans one thing and telling the rich other things in private. It looks like hes manipulating things and will lie/cheat for that '5%' because he has no interest in uniting the country. Hes no fucking Casper.

Now - the above may be false, but until he gives a proper response, hes just making it look worse.
