A movie that's weird for the sake of being weird. It wants to be strange. It wants to be noir. It wants to push a narrative that our thoughts are being manipulated and controlled by subliminal messages in everything we consume, be it entertainment, commercial, music lyrics etc that it even includes a scene where the protagonist finds a hidden message in a map of Hyrule from the first Zelda-game. Is it good? Is it bad? I have absolutely no fucking idea. And to be honest, I don't even think the director got a clue either. The movie is just a set of poorly conjoined scenes that happens to involve a mystery that doesn't go anywhere. The subplots doesn't go anywhere either. Characters are pointless and uninteresting. Feels like a vanity project from a director who wanted to make something artsy because he was afraid of being pigeonholed as a horror director, but it backfired spectacularly because he doesn't know what he's doing and he ended up with this. Or maybe I'm just too fucking stupid to understand it.

Ghostbusters Frozen Empire and Godzilla Kong New Empire were both disappointing.

Ghostbusters was a mess that tried to do too much. Godzilla Kong looked bad, sounded bad, and was kind of a bore to top it off.

The Fly (1986)

Just watched The Fly with my dad, who surprisingly had never seen it before! It’s been at least 20 years since I’ve seen it, so I actually forgot most of the specifics of the plot.

But GOOD LORD! This is practical horror effects at their absolute peak! Cronenberg is a master of disgust, and the movie was such a treat to watch in HD. I haven’t cringed like that in a long time, especially the scene where he peels his fingernails off and squirts the mirror. An absolute masterpiece of 80s grotesque horror.

If you haven’t seen this classic yet, do yourself a favor and watch it now. Jeff Goldblum just destroys his role and makes the whole movie. Despite the relatively goofy plot, I’d consider this a must-see.

Plus, 80s Geena Davis 😍

8.5/10

Barry Lyndon - A Kubrick film I have never seen before. It was a good movie and I enjoyed most of everything. Overall a sad story. Nice little period piece.

It looks like some people really thought Arnold was still the hot shit after his governor gig, since he was enlisted into some extremely generic films. This could be the most generic of them all. There is not much reason to ever watch this film, and I don't think I would have if Arnold wasn't starring in it. Totally generic, and unnecessary movie.

Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F

Well it was better than the third one, but still it was pretty lame. The daughter was a useless character, everything they did needed to be verbally explained as if the audience is lobotomized, Billy looked freakishly old and deformed, and the Axel F ditty was in the background the entire running time. Glad we are done with this.

The Garfield Movie

garfield.jpg

This movie ruined my day. Super generic, ugly looking excuse for an animated feature. Throws away 50 years of Garfield lore to have him do insane Mission Impossible style action sequences with weird characters we never saw before They even erased his mom from the wonderful TV special Garfield on the Town by retconning his entire origin story. Also a terrible voice acting performance by Chris Pratt. 0/10 not my Garfield.

This had a very nice look, the 80s aesthetics really worked, it had some interesting characters and great acting, some A24 weirdness too, but it never really connected with me. At least it looked and felt like an actual film.

The Quiet Place: Day One

Quite liked it. I wish it would have been about the military dealing with stuff and people being in panic, but it was instead a nice little emotional film. I just hope we get a proper "Day One" film some day as I am a sucker for those stories.

Kingdom of the Planet of the apes...... It was entertaining and good enough.

The Bikeriders- I liked this, but it is a real showcase for Jodie Comer to do her accent work. The story is decent. Overall though the movie feels shallow.

Tekkonkinkreet - I've had the blu ray on my shelf for maybe 15 years but for some reason I'd never managed to get more than a third of the way through. A combination of the weird art and always putting it on when it's too late to be concentrating on subtitles.

Finally watched the entire thing, and it's brilliant. Two street kids battling yakuza who want to demolish their slum and build a theme park. I even appreciated the art this time. It's a very unusual style, and the city is almost overwhelmingly dense and claustrophobic, despite the bright colours. A great film.

I'm getting into these modern US Godzilla movies. Watching Godzilla: King of the Monsters. I am not sure if this is the first in the series or what, I don't really care tbh.

Dumb, mindless fun so far. The plot feels like children playing pretend and making things up as they go along. The human characters having to provide constant exposition about what is going on is kind of funny.

I'm not a fan of most of the Kaijuverse but I do like how inventive they get especially when it comes to setting like Hollow Earth is especially a fun and unique setting

Civil War had some interesting scenes but the basic problem with this movie is that it assumes you think of war press as some kind of noble profession but they are presented here as just kind of violence porn junkies that I could not relate to at all, like they have scenes where they are so tore up when things go south but uh, you chose this my dudes so you could get pics of dead guys, guys shooting each other? Weird movie.

The Fall Guy (2024)

Awesome movie. Very action packed and fast paced. I will basically watch anything these days with Ryan Gosling in it. He's such a likable actor and really easy to enjoy and he's just in his element here completely. Emily Blunt is great in this movie too. It's just one of those movies you can stick on and have fun with it and kinda just forget about things for a while. Very entertaining.

Hit Man - thought it was a funny and well written take on a true story 4/5

Maxxxine - pretty boring, wasn’t much of a fan of the preceding movies either. 2/5

Just saw fly me to the moon and thought it was excellent. Scarlett was amazing and it had a lot of little funny parts. I'll buy the 4k when it comes out. Probably go see it again in the theaters since I have the regal pass

Chap wait till you watch Godzilla Minus 1, Christ it's so far above the US ones it's not even funny, having said that I really enjoyed the first one

Ghostbusters Frozen Empire

Not as good as the first one but definitely worth a watch. I think these new movies does a good job passing on the torch to a new generation while also respecting the legacy. Lots of references to the OG movies, lots of action with ghosts and other otherworldly creatures and lots of laughs, even if it did get a little too much at the end. Not every bit of dialogue needs to have a witty punchline and tons of sarcasm. The story was okay, albeit a bit muddy and derivative. There are so many characters and not enough proper time to give everyone the chance to really flourish. But the movie feels like an extension or at least proper sequel to the classic movies and I like that. It definitely feels like you're watching Ghostbusters and not some shitty fan fiction like that awful reboot from 2016.

Sherlock Holmes - A Game of Shadows

Part 2 of the Holmes movies continues on with the story from the first one. Sadly, most of the plot points from the original are forgotten, and an original story is used instead. Nothing wrong with that, but the film is not as captivating as the first one. First amd third acts work well, but the second one really drags. I can't say what happened there, but the first one was somehow better paced. Maybe it just felt new while this one did not.

Fresh Horses..... I thought it was a vehicle for Molly Ringwald to do an accent. Movie is OK. Ben stiller is in this, probably one of his first co-star roles.

Karate Kid - made my kids watch it. they liked it, it is a classic.

I first thought of giving the film up. The first 30 minutes felt confusing, and I checked the clock about 4 times during that period. After that, the film gets finally going, and the rest of the film was enjoyable, if a little bit predictable film. Time travel rarely makes any sense, but here it makes even less. Something was also wrong with the sound mix of my release, as most of the dialogue was very quiet, I could barely hear anything. Some scenes on the other hand were loud as hell.

Have not watched this in ages - probably back when I saw it in the theater with my gf in high school. I really miss movies like this and love courtroom dramas. Even knowing how it ends, I enjoyed it a ton. Watched this ahead of watching the TV series, which I hope is great!

Iron Man (2008)

It operates like a horror film, the threat from the terrorists is real, Tony crawling around in the cave, the internal corporate problems with Stark industries, the door open for "Iron Man" becoming like skynet and the Terminator is hinted at.

I decided to get in some cinéma du look films this month. Started by rewatching what is probably the most internationally popular film in the series movement / genre. Still just as good as the first time I saw it.

Saw Eileen last night. It's about a timid young secretary, working at a prison in the 1960s, who becomes infatuated with the glamorous psychologist investigating the case of a teenage patricide.

It sort of fizzles out at the end and definitely could have gone darker, but it's short enough not to be boring - the low IMDB rating for this is way off the mark, or maybe it's just a love it / hate it sort of film.

The performance of Thomasin McKenzie in the lead role is reason enough to give it a go. She is perfect in this.

Godzilla X Kong New Empire

It was eh. How do you come up with a threat bigger than Mechagodzilla, who wiped the floor with Godzilla? Well, we’ve got these two new chumps Skar King and uh..I forget the name.
So Skar King is smaller and wimpier than Kong. Then you’ve got the ice monster that was soooo hyped up by Youtubers, as a major threat. If there was an old lady Titan it was that. Had to be the most docile looking Titan I’ve ever seen.

Next up is possibly Space Godzilla? We’ll see, but anything’s better than these last two goons.

Take everything that made seeing the original so fun in 96 and replace it with everything you hate about movies in 2024.
Can you elaborate on the latter? I’m on the fence for seeing this, so if it’s legit bad you’ll save me some money.

So for me, it’s the same as when they rebooted Jurassic Park, Ghostbusters, etc.

The original is packed with insanely talented actors doing great character work and elevating the source material. This is full of interchangeable faces, you won’t remember any character names the second it’s over. There’s zero tension, just non stop cheese. The score is replaced with non stop modern country singles blaring at you. And our antagonist? That’s right, he’s an evil YouTuber, who regularly addresses chat during the movie. Gotta get those views baby like and subscribe wooo!!!!

And of course, any semblance of practical effects are replaced with the wall to wall Marvel CG overload.

That said, the reviews are relatively decent so I’m sure I’ll end up being the outlier. I’m just very over this shit.

Thanks to the last page of this thread, I've crossed this movie off the list of critically acclaimed movies I've started half a dozen times but never finished. Not my cup of tea.

I kind of admire it more than I actually enjoy it. The part where he kills his 'brother' is deeply unsettling, and the soundtrack is a musical migraine. But the acting is incredible - there are moments in most films where I can almost sense the crew and cameras around the edges of the set, but not in this. It's a work of art.

Just finished Barbarian (2023)

I rarely watch horror because I can't stand jump scares, there is something about them that can put me in complete panic mode. Especially when there's supernatural stuff involved. I can take all the gore but the scares are too much

But sometimes I'm just curious and want to see if I'm still susceptible to the scares.

However, I liked Barbarian but I had to watch it in a couple of sessions. Fun fucking story, they can get real creative with this stuff

I wish jump scares didn't affect me, it would open up a whole new genre for me. Obviously there is horror with minor scares and I would love recommendations

Hereditary, Midsommer, The Witch & It Follows spring to mind from the modern Horror stuff. I don't think they have any jump scares, well not any that I remember lol. Good luck.

Edit: Rosemary's Baby, definitely check that one out if you've not already.

The Wailing (2016) if you can do subs, that film will fuck you up.
