A place beyond the pines

I'm kinda torn with this one tbh, it feels like it should of had way more impact, but just didn't delivery, the first 1/3 was shaping up to be something decent, then bam.....it competely changes focus. 6/10

Drive

Third time watching this, and liked it more on each viewing, one of main gripes is the use of music, in certain points, that weird 80s pop love tune that plays, straight up takes away from on emotion in the scenes it plays, especially compared to the the awesome use of night call in the intro

7.3/10

Watched Mufasa (with the daughter) and Sonic 3 (with the son) recently.

Mufasa - it was okay, the animals are way more expressive compared to the CGI Lion King movie, but it sometimes looks odd. Not sure which I prefer honestly, since being unexpressive was one of my complaints for Lion King. Story wise, it was okay, wasn't super interesting, nor felt like it was a story that needed telling. Didn't like most of the songs too. Daughter had fun though.

Sonic 3 - I quite enjoy this Sonic movie franchise, despite not being a big fan of the games. We had a great time with Sonic 3, action scenes were a lot of fun to watch. The movie series seem to be moving away from the human characters, apart from the main villain. I'm down for more Sonic movies.

I was really surprised at this because of who directed it because this feels like a FILM instead of a chitlin circuit movie... More historically accurate than I thought too... Based on the true story of this regiment who delivered a huge backlog of mail to soldiers during a low point of the allies fight against the Axis... Where many lost their will to fight. If not for the letters these women soldiers brought to the fighting soldiers on the frontlines, dare I say, we might have had an even longer war. I teared up a few times ... Yes, it was a different time but the ugliness isn't the point... The point is they did something most didn't think they could and they brought hope back to our soldiers!

The last surviving members of 6888 got to see the film before release and they were pleased.

Hero - I haven't watched this since it originally made it stateside. It's often visually stunning and the color theming for how the story is told and retold is both brilliant and lush. The action is too fantastical for my tastes but the chess fight with Li and Yen is worth the price of admission. The narrative is probably controversial and I could see how it would turn western audiences off.

Gentlemen, we can rebuild it. We have the capability to make the world's first enhanced store. Steam will be that store. Better than it was before.

Not a great movie. Not even a good one.

I Saw The Devil - One of the first movies I watched when I got interested in the Korean movie scene. Upon watching again, I don't care for this one very much. It's not a matter of performances or how the movie is shot, but rather it quickly breaks my suspension of disbelief. Sure, stories often need fantastical elements to hold interest, but you can only go back to the well so many times. It's a shame as I think there is a good outline for a revenge movie here.

I remember after the 3rd repeat of catch and torture I was kinda done.

Watched Kraven the Hunter in cinema with the wife.

★★★☆☆ / ★★★★★

Not a great movie. Definitely entertaining as a mindless action romp, but the end felt hugely anti-climatic and a number of missed opportunities in terms of the plot left us feeling a bit tepid coming out of the theatre.
