Couldn’t believe it when I saw this on Amazon Prime. Used to looooove this movie when I was a kid. That scene when they order mill in the Salon is etched into my memory forever.
Overall, the movie is not so good though. Like a slapstick Karate Kid. The memories carried it for me.

Dude... I must've watched this movie a hundred times. Absolutely LOVED it as a kid. I was 12 when it came out...

Very powerful movie. Very difficult to watch. Aint gonna lie, a couple of scenes caused some real heartache. Great performance by Chiwetel Eijofor. He really carried the movie. The rest of the cast were brilliant too. Michael Fassbender plays the most unhinged piece of shit I've ever seen on screen. Cannot imagine what is takes to get into that sort of mindset. Absolutely brutal.
The movie was also great on a technical level, with several of the most difficult to watch scenes done in one long take with outstanding acting. Cinematography and editing was top notch. Music by Hans Zimmer was very emotional and moving. The director did not shy away from the subject matter and just laid ut out there for all to see. He pulled no punches with this one.

Last night I watched the 1986 film The Ghost Snatchers
Hong Kong cinema in the 80s really was something. This comedy horror movie went in a lot of very strange and unexpected directions. The premise is that there is a haunted high rise building that's inhabited by ghosts of Japanese soldiers, who are trying to claim a few more souls so that they can resurrect their captain and take revenge. Sounds like a solid premise, except what we actually get is a weird duo of a fat guy and his sleazy uncle bumbling around stirring up trouble. For example, the entire second act revolves around the uncle being bailed out of jail by a prostitute (who is actually a ghost), following her to a hotel where they have sex and she kills him. The main character then has to journey to his three favorite spots with a magic drum to collect his fractured spirit and bring him back to life. He finds the spirits at a massage parlor, a porn theater, and his girlfriend's bedroom - then the movie continues on like nothing happened.
This movie is fully past the "so bad it's good" territory, straight into the "so bad it's amazing" territory. If you're not going to watch the movie, you at least owe it to yourself to watch this epic scene:

I watched that documentary yesterday. Really good. Those poor kids lost their dad and their (step)mom within a year ... That must have been rough.
And then there's his decades long friendship with Robin Williams, that if Christopher Reeve hadn't died maybe Robin Williams wouldn't committed suicide

Basically a prequel to A Plague Tale 3.
There are rats, plagues and hunger all over early 20th century china. Whole cities have been eaten by millions of rats. Only light seems to offer some protection.
They don't mention it, but clearly the Macula is active again.
Not everyone is aware of how bad things have gotten, so the passengers of a train are in for quite the surprise.
It's not a good film, so only watch if you absolutely cant wait for the next A Plague Tale game. Don't expect it to be canon.

The Day After Tomorrow
It must have been at least 15 years since I last saw it. Glad I did, because this was quite a fun ride. At least the first half of the film is, the second half drags a little. But watching those massive natural disaster happening in front of your eyes is really something. The funny thing is, CGI on tornadoes and such look mostly fine when there are not a lot of them, but when the film goes on more personal angle, the CGI is far more noticeable, especially with the wolves. Mostly enjoyed the film, but the dragging story on the latter half of the movie bugged me a little. Roland Emmerich really is great at showing disasters when he is at the top of hos game. Too bad he doesn't always fully deliver.

What time is it?
My first viewing of the Samurai Trilogy. I'm pretty mixed on it. It has so much runtime yet often feels disjointed and underdeveloped. It's easy to forgive some of the more dated effects and cerography as it is otherwise very often beautiful. The final duel is great and Toshirô Mifune as Musashi is perfect.

I rewatched this the other week as well. Like you say a difficult watch at times, but masterfully made. Very powerful film.
The directors latest, Blitz is out soon if you didn't know and is receiving rave reviews.

Yeah, I definitely want to check out his filmography after 12 years a slave. He seems to be a very daring filmmaker who tackles difficult subject matters. I like that.
