The Bridge on the River Kwai (1957) 4.5 / 5 - Classic war film. Watched it as a boy with my Dad but been so long forgot the majority of it. Interesting premise. Great dialogue.
The Enemy Below (1959) 4 / 5 - Great war time movie that manages to stay suspenseful and keep your attention all the way through. It's like watching a real life version of the Battleships board game. Great acting from both Robert Mitchum and Curd Jurgens with both sides coming across as human.
Where Eagles Dare (1968) 5 / 5 - One of the best war movies I have ever seen, and plays out like a modern action film, but Ingridd Pitt in her Bavarian dress gives it the best perfect score.
Paint Your Wagon (1969) 4 / 5 - I don't care what anyone says this movie is hilarious, I can't remember the last time I've laughed out so hard during a movie ("Howdy Parson, Welcome to Hell!"). It's slapstick like humour but without the modern silliness. The great music gives it cult status but I agree it isn't for everyone.
The Godfather (1972) 4 / 5 - It demands a lot of attention and probably much better on a rewatch, especially after watching Part II.
Papillon (1973) 3.5 / 5 - Great acting, good story, not a bad film by any means at all but I just got really bored of it especially towards the end. Everything just seems to fall flat. It's got nothing on The Great Escape.
The Godfather Part 2 (1974) 5 / 5 - I can only imagine how the world reacted to this masterpiece when it was released. It's so good in itself but it also makes the first film infinitely better and immediately rewatchable. The acting of Al Pacino is probably the best I have ever seen.
Legends of the Fall (1994) 4 / 5 - Emotive and beautiful. The landscape and scenery ilicits a strong response especially if you have ever lost your family members, or a place you previously called home and held dear to you. A particular scene near the end, a redemptive arc you could say, made me tear up.
Cold Mountain (2003) 4.5 / 5 - Slow starter but impactful ending. There is a theme of meaning and fate which is subtle but extemely powerful. Now one of my all time favourite films.
