Venom 3 - mediocre, But I will say Tom Hardy is good at the physical comedy and work he has done with the character.

Hundreds of Beavers. Went in with low expectations and not sure what i was in for. The movie is pretty genius. If you like comedy that's part slapstick, visual, and physical then you will like this.

Darkest Hour (2017)

Winston Churchill biopic during WW2.

And it is absolute utter nonsense, portraying him as emotionally weak, indecisive, and needing the constant reassurances of those around him. At one point he is sobbing and ready to capitulate to Hitler and needs to be talked out of it by his wife and then the king, to whom he continues crying and whining in front of. At another point he goes on the tube and asks everyone for their opinions and whether, again, should Britain capitulate to Hitler.

0/10, emasculation fantasy and a disgrace to history

Drunken Master - Drunken Master 2 is one of my favorite movies of all time. I've tried to watch this a handful of times over the years and always peter out around the training montage. I need to track down a subbed version of this at the dub is of the time (see: atrocious) which makes the comedy fall flat. Maybe that stuff lands better in its' original form. It has some wonderful choreography throughout and the back half of the movie is much stronger than first. I really want to watch Snake in the Eagle's Shadow now.

The Tale of Zatoichi - There are a bunch of tonal shifts and character motivations that didn't land well for me but it's still a good watch.

One of the movie channels days ago had Braveheart, followed by Matrix 1.

Hadnt seen either in a while. Braveheart was predictable from what I remember. But Matrix, I totally forgot about many characters like Apoc, Mouse and Dozer. I knew Hugo Weaving was good in it, but didnt remember he was this good! Keanu Reaves is actually pretty shit in the movie. Weaving and Fishbourne were leagues better than the rest of the cast. Cypher was decent too.

Darkman

I don't have much to say about this. It is a cheap action film from 1990 that leans heavily on horror tropes of the 80's. I can't say how it felt back then, but it felt extremely cheap today. Still somewhat amusing seeing Liam Neeson in one of his first leading roles, but there wasn't much more substance to it than that.

I know some people are instantly going to tell me, “well, hang on, THAT film is another matter”, but I’ve had Tenet in my Blu-Ray collection since it released, and never watched it (Tenet being the only other Nolan film I’ve not seen) due to being bummed I had to pass on seeing it in theaters because of the idiotic decision to release it in summer 2020, and I was just frustrated my first viewing wouldn’t be on the big screen like every Nolan film had been for me since Batman Begins (and now Interstellar is a part of that track record thanks to yesterday). I will now continue to wait on watching it, and maybe I’ll get lucky and they’ll do a 5th anniversary theatrical showing.

One of my personal top 10 favorite films of all time.
It was #15 when I made my personal Top 100 movies list five years ago (...I have a lot of time on my hands.), but I think it's top 10 now.

The ending. I love the movie but the ending didn't work for me at all.
I'm sure you know what they were going for with that ending, so I won't try and condescend by saying what I got from it and why it works for me.

How would you have preferred they ended it?

The ending. I love the movie but the ending didn't work for me at all.

The movie is about Tommy Lee Jones’ character Sheriff Bell’s personal journey. The chase between Moss and Chigurh is to highlight the world Bell lives in, our world, and how at the end Bell has lost his sense of nostalgia and now has a better understanding of his limitations and the nature of the world.

“What you got ain’t nothing new. This country’s hard on people. You can’t stop what’s coming. It ain’t all waiting on you. That’s vanity.”

The discussion of the two dreams at the end, IMHO, means this: the first dream, where Bell is a child and loses the money his father gave him, is showing how Bell grew up with this inaccurate view of his father as this larger-than-life hero, and thus he felt like he could never live up to that which blinded him to how the horrors he witnessed weren’t anything new and he mistakenly believed he hadn’t lived up to his father’s image, and the second dream, where Bell is in the dark and cold and then sees his father carrying a light and heading ahead of him to make a fire and Bell knowing his father would be waiting for him to join him, shows Bell is thankfully not broken by the experience (as was hinted as a possibility in the opening narration by Bell, “a man would have to put his soul at hazard”) and knows that the work he did and his father did had meaning in spite of the unconquerable darkness around them, and that he’ll someday see his father again in the afterlife.

Now, I know some, including possibly yourself, understood what the ending was going for, and just simply didn’t like it, which is fine. I just know also there have been some who didn’t follow what the movie was going for with the ending and appreciated it more once it was elaborated on by others.

Grabbed the 4K edition and it looked glorious. Vibrant and vivid. Very well made conversion 🙌 the movie itself is still rocking. One of my favorite fantasy movies. Val Kilmer and Warwick Davis has such good chemistry. The plot is engaging, the action is fun, the cast of characters are great. And not to forget, the beautiful musical score by the late James Horner. It really sets the mood. I fucking love this movie. One of the all time greats. Peak 80s.

It is really one of the movies where the sound works to make you feel as disoriented and lost as the character. It is beautiful. And so loud.

Really liked it. I thought the ending was the weakest part of the movie. It wasn't terrible, but it was a little out of control. But Hugh Grant was great, it had an interesting premise, it was tense all the way throughout.

I've enjoyed a lot watching Frankie Freako.
Funny, loud, and beautifully hand-made, with almost zero CGI for puppets and effects (except some optical, for obvious reasons).

Also, I've decided to teach myself some silent movies knowledge lately, and among several gems I had the pleasure to watch this great work of art: The Phantom Carriage (1921)

A worthy companion for your favourite version of A Christmas Carol (mine's the muppet one, of course).

What time is it?
Maybe better for its' own topic and inspired by some of the lists posted above, but I've been thinking about if any of the movies I watched in 2024 would make my personal top 10 list. I first time viewed a lot of great movies this year, and I adore the Lone Wolf and the Cub series, but there is one movie that would: Hara Kiri.

Which also got me thinking what the other 9 would be and just spit-balling with no particular order: 12 Angry Men, Old Boy, Princess Mononoke, Grave of the Fireflies, Pulp Fiction (you could almost slap any QT movie in here and I'd be fine with it and I do seem to love Jackie Brown more than most which is tempting), Shane, Legend of the Drunken Master, The Thing, The Killer.

I like the idea of a short list because you have to make some hard choices and nitpick. I love The Predator except for the intro shot that the studio forced upon the film. I adore Shawshank Redemption and Goodfellas, but really dislike the ending bus ride/beach scenes in the former and feel it would have been better served when Red finds the buried box that Andy left for him and for the latter, the ending leading to Henry becoming an informant just doesn't land for me nearly as well as the rest of the movie. Hard Boiled vs The Killer is a tough choice. As mentioned above, picking one QT movie is nearly impossible for me. How can I not include Seven Samurai? I already hate myself for not doing so. Ditto for Rear Window, Monty Python and the Holy Grail, My Cousin Vinny, Who Framed Roger Rabbit, Amadeus, Groundhog Day, Dazed and Confused, and The Princess Bride. And what am I forgetting? Ahhh! Maybe this should have been a top 20 list.

Let's see

- Metropolis (1927) (this was a rewatch, actually, the new cut which restores some b-stories cut for other markets it's simply marvelous)
- Nosferatu (1922) (rewatch because I saw the Herzog version recently and I wanted to refresh my memory a little)
- Der Golem (1920) (I always liked the Golem appearances, the movie depicts him like an innocent and apparently calm child, which is absolutely true)
- The Phantom Carriage (1921) (as I said before, I was pleasently surprised at the universal theme of this film, which makes it so terribly modern in our times, plus great SFXs for a movie that old)
- City Lights (1931) (not strictly a silent movie, but I'm not that picky, gentle story like all of the Tramp's, absolutely a classic)
- Faust (1926) (always loved the play, and I was not disappointed, great sets and camera angles)

in the future I'll tackle:
- The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari (1920)
- The Cat and the Canary (1927)
- Dr. Mabuse the Gambler (1922)
- The Phantom of the Opera (1925) (of this one apparently only exists a recent cut from 1929 or so, with added scenes and score, so I'm a little undecided)

It's fascinating to learn about the shooting of multiple version for different markets (export and domestic cuts) which often led to lightly off-center shots due to having different camers concurrently on set, if not completely redone scenes, the tint philosophy, the approaching menace of the 'talkies', the huge amount of lost endeavours due to fires or accidents and so on.

Darkman II: The Return of Durant

From a cheesy title comes a cheesy movie. For some reason, a cheap direct-to-video sequel for the 1990 film was comissioned in 1995. By then, Liam Neeson had become a big star, and obviously did not return for a cheap film like this. He was replaced by Arnold Vosloo, who does a decent enough job. The villain, Durant, who exploded with a helicopter suddenly comes back to life without a scratch, and Darkman has to defeat him again. The film is super cheesy, and couldn't really hold my interest. I have little hope for the third film now.
