The Lord of the Rings

Finished my annual watch of LOTR. Is the battle for Minas Tirith still the most epic fight ever? I haven't seen the third Hobbit movie yet, the battle there is supposed to be long but not as engrossing as in LOTR. It's just... long (or so I've heard). The Minas Tirith battle is just a perfect mix of epicness, despair and heroism, so well done and shown. Almost every scene gave me goosebumps and the charge of the Rohirrim... so good. (yeah yeah the legolas stunts, but whatever... that's like a minor part of the battle. not like the barrel scene or anything.)

My favourite is still the battle of Helms Deep though. TTT is generally my favourite of the three movies. It has that extra dose of despair and hopelessness and it's about the annihilation of an entire people. It is somehow more personal and the character are also better fleshed out imo.

All in all, still some of the best, if not the best, movies ever made. It's mind boggling how PJ messed up the Hobbit after these.

Earlier I saw Gattaca. I thought it would be more sci-fi and didn't expect it to be a drama, but still a very good film nonetheless. I also liked how small scale the film was and how they only really had 3 or 4 locations shown through out the film, this also helped from dating the film to much.

Watched Unbroken. It definitely has some issues, but I enjoyed it overall. The pace is slow to a fault, but my friends told me some material was cut from the book so I understand it was already in a bit of a tough spot with running length. The flashbacks suffered from breaking the rule of "show, don't tell", and I get the feeling it was done to get through them quicker, which removes a bit of the depth of the main character's determination. Takamasa Ishihara does a fantastic job as the prison warden and definitely made the movie a lot more watchable with his malice; everyone else is fine.

Not a great movie, but I certainly enjoyed it more than shit like The Hobbit part 3.

Also watched The Maze Runner. That was way better than I was expecting. The way it builds up the world of the maze is very well-done, and the Grievers are terrifying. There are so many movies with child characters who pull their punches, and this wasn't one of them. Most of the characters got a decent amount of development despite the large cast. The main exception was the one girl, who had all the characterization of a plank of wood. I wasn't a fan of the big reveal at the end; it seemed like obvious sequel bait and the exposition was incredibly poor compared to the previous world-building.

The Guest was hilarious

Lance Reddick wins the MVP in this one, totally nailed that balance of pulp and parody, like a 21st century Dr. Loomis. His voice is so damn awesome.

Lance Reddick is always MVP. And the end of The Guest is so nonsensical it made the movie even better. Felt like wacky super stylish Italian horror.

"lol IDK they do this maze thing for Halloween? And its like super elaborate and there's a hall of mirrors on some Enter the Dragon shit? also fog and that 80s song from Hotline Miami."

"aight stay close"

"Fares are for tourists, kid. Consider it a free lesson in street savoir faire from New York's coolest quadruped."

Saw it again after seeing it when I was a kid on VHS in 1997. I don't know if it's nostalgia talking or what but I really enjoyed the film, I feel that it's probably the most underrated Disney film. Good voice acting in general and a really great, funky soundtrack. Story wise though it's thin but what makes this film for me is the different dogs(characters) and the atmosphere of New York itself thanks to the gritty artstyle. I mean the first image that pops up on screen just takes you back. My favorite songs have to be these two besides the opening by Huey Lewis:

Why should I worry
Streets of gold

Looks really good on Bluray, just a shame the image has a few contrast issues and that it has been DNR'd quite a bit but other then that it's a definite upgrade to the DVD/VHS counterpart. All in all, I recommend it for people who want a cartoon set in New York with interesting characters(Dogs) and a funky soundtrack.

"When you pray for rain, you gotta deal with the mud too. "

For me, I'll never get tired of badass main characters where they go and fuck shit up throughout the entire movie without logic. Not everyone will like it though because my man Denzel was Batman on steroids. Appearing anywhere, everywhere and at the right time, knowing exactly what to say/do. To enjoy this movie you have to not think to deep about it. Just Think about how some dumb motherfuckers unleashed a walking god. I think the best thing you could say about the film is that the action is well shot, which is what you want. Recommended if you want to watch a badass film which Denzel does a fantastic job of it, I enjoyed John Wick more though.

He was the best part of the movie.
Honestly i kept waiting for some twist, myself, but in the end it was pretty straight forward, although undoubtedly funny and with some decent action, even.

I guess everyone saying how amazing it was, built my expectations somewhat too high.

Dawn of the planet of the apes was really good. The monkeys were mindblowing. Didn't like the main guy's face at first but he grew on me, and Keri Russell....can't get enough of her

Unbreakableposterwillis.jpg

Last night watched Unbreakable. Pretty good film, and I can see why some people consider it one of the few "good" shaymalin films. One thing I hated was how much they forced comic books into the film. We get it, it's a super hero movie, we don't need to be reminded of this every second.

Just watched Frank and I thought it was pretty interesting.

I've watched a ton of older movies this month, but I did just get Guardians of the Galaxy so I'm pretty excited about finally getting to watch it!

What kind of versions are those? Is that a press thing? And shame on them for still sending out DVDs.

Interstellar's screener is going to be Bluray, can't wait to watch it again in a few days - even though I didn't particularly enjoy it the first time.

Boogie_nights_ver1.jpg

Just finished watching Boogie Nights. It was a fantastic film albeit a bit weird at times even for me. The tonal shift in the second half was a lot darker then I expected, but I still really liked it. This is my first PTA film so I definitely need to check out the rest of his stuff. I'm also curious as to how he was able to get such a great cast with this being his first film.

Howl's Moving Castle Been years since I last saw it. Looked and sounded amazing on blu ray. Was the first ghibli film I ever saw, still my favourite one.

To me it was probably one of the weakest ones.
I mean it looks and sound as great as you'd expect, but the story just goes nowhere with a rushed and cop-out ending out of nowhere.

I'm not sure how the original novel played out, but something must've gone wrong with the movie script at some point (i think it changed director halfway through, too?)

Collateral_%28Movie%29.jpg

Just saw Collateral. It was an alright film. There were several things I didn't like. I'm not a fan of the cinematography that this and other crime movies at the time use, IDK it just doesn't really feel like I'm watching a movie when I see movies filmed this way. I also think that both Max and Vincent made some really dumb decisions through out the film. It was also weird how empty the city was at times despite it being set in the second largest city in the country. I also really hated how, especially in the beginning, there was a music track being played like every second. There were things I did like about the film though. I'm not the biggest Foxx fan but I thought he was really good here. I also really loved Cruises performance and this is one of the few films I've seen him in where I didn't see him as Tom Cruise but as the character he was portraying (I think it was the hair dye). Overall it was a pretty decent film.

Fantastic film. One of the best animated films I have seen in a long, loooooooooooooong time. It was funny, looked amazing and the story actually went in some VERY unexpected directions.

Superb. Lord and Miller have some serious talent.

They're most likely Academy Award screeners. I've always found it weird that they still produce those on DVD's. Insterstellar is actually the first screener to ever be sent out in HD on Blu-ray, which is mind boggling to me considering it's 2014...

I saw the Interview, it was a fine enjoyable comedy. Nothing really under the surface here, just alot of standard Seth Rogany comedy, and James Franco making his Franco Faces. Physical comedy was pretty decent. Nothing offensive, probably a great movie for some group family bullshit viewing.

Guardians of the Galaxy (2014) - Cool cast and some funny moments, but ultimately there was nothing that blew me away. 2.5 / 4

Pacific Rim (2013) - Amazing visually. Of course the story wasn't all that deep, but I don't think that was the point. The only thing that bothered me were the scientists and Ron Perlman's character - waaay over the top, even for a movie like this. 3 / 4

Godzilla (2014) - Watched it a day after watching Pacific Rim, so visually it didn't make too much of an impact on me. They tried to make it more serious than it needed to be and failed. The beginning was somewhat interesting but with flat characters and story full of cliches it turned into very mediocre experience. 2 / 4

Jack Ryan: Shadow Recruit (2014) - What a terrible movie. As much as I like Keira Knightley I think she was miscast here. In general, everything was bland and uninspired. 1 / 4

Avatar (2009) - The story and characters were so simplistic and predictable (probably because they were basically copied verbatim from other works) that it was almost insulting. I kind of expected it to be this way to some extent, but I thought that at least action scenes and visuals would save it - I was wrong. Can't believe it's the top grossing movie of all time. 1.5 / 4

The Fountain (2006) - I can't say the movie worked for me in 100%, but it is told in an interesting and engaging way, from both structure and visual standpoints. The story could probably be described in a couple of sentences, but it was more about conveying feelings and emotions. I expect it to pop up in my thoughts every once in a while. 3 / 4

Into the Woods - I knew it was based on a musical, but for some reason I didn't expect the movie to be a full-on musical. Dumb, I know. I was taken aback when the first song started, but I then thought "hey, maybe it'll be like Tangled and it'll be just a few songs." But no, it just kept going on and on. Even my daughter started squirming an hour into it. 2+ hours was a bit too long. Johnny Depp as the Big Bad (slightly creepy-pedo) Wolf was actually the best part of the whole movie, if that says anything.

The Interview - First 30-40 minutes had some laughs, soon as Kim Jong got on screen it fizzled.

Anyone else tired of Seth Rogan yet?

007 THUNDERBALL

It's a multimedia review. I talk about the movie itself, the cool shit I liked, and Sean Connery beating the SHIT out of dudes at the end of the movie. I also talk about stuff referenced by Austin Powers. Included are gifs, pictures, and audio/video of the title song. This movie has sharks, a jet pack, more sharks, a dog pissing in the road in a scene, and a most impressive giant underwater battle with 30-40 people stabbing, shooting spearguns, choking each other. It's pretty cool. Also one of the more violent Bond movies in the sense that there is actually blood in this. Someone gets shot, you're going to see blood for sure.

heh heh

The Hobbit: Battle of the Five Armies
Very very average film. Pointless battles and melodrama (how many times are they going to focus on dragon sickness - we get it). The only redeeming part was the climatic ending and I really enjoyed Fili and Tauriels heartbreaking relationship
:(
.

Almost Famous
Wow what a thrill ride. The soundtrack whisks you away in this long 70s fever rock journey and never lets go. The cinematography is great and Kate Hudson as Penny Lane was so goddamn incredibly endearing.

The Interview
Some funny stuff here and there but nothing more than your typical silly toilet/stoner comedy.

Enemy (2013) was pretty awesome, but I would lying if I said I knew exactly what happened. Visually stunning and the score was fantastic throughout. This is the kind of movie that I will definitely be watching again so I can figure it out better. And god damn was it a nice movie to look at! Beautiful stuff. Highly recommended for people who like strange movies such as David Lynch's, etc.

Sunset Limited
excellent performance by Jones and Jackson, but it was to be expected since it's a play with all the usual show-yer-skills ingredients: one room, two men, lots of deep dialogue. Not a bad movie

Big Hero 6. Fantastic. It's a great mix of Disney and Marvel brilliance. My 4 year old son loved it too. Baymax was obviously a favourite.

A Most Wanted Man: A well acted, but tedious movie that reinforces the belief it's okay to subjugate rights in the name of combating terrorism. There's nothing thrilling about this movie: a lot of it is repeating information to other agencies and people doing mundane tasks.

Well that's an interesting and incorrect assessment of the film. I mean the whole thing is about rewarding people instead of punishing them to achieve results. There's even an entire scene where Gunther lays out precisely what positive and negative things he could do and how he would like to do the positive. Where are you even coming from.

One of my favorites of the year.

Los Brujas De Zugarramurdi: i liked his previous two films i saw (La comunidad & Crimen Perfecto) but after a great opening this one became pretty tedious to sit through, with more or less lazy jokes about "crazy exes" and what not.
Crimen Perfecto in particular was more clever in depicting a very pathetic man stuck in his own delusion, used to treating women like objects, having the tables turned on him.
This one didn't even feel one step above a sit-com about the fat lazy husband, and the nagging wife scenario.
And beyond that, there simply were no good jokes in the whole second half, just a lot of running around and some awful CGi.
