If there are people who haven't been added to this and want to be, speak up.

And while it's not timely, I have just enough christmas spirit left to want to include this: vincent price with his fake tree.

Watched Rush yesterday, loved the overall look, those 70s F1 cars were something else. Very decent acting, and Bruhl especially looked the part. First film I've watched in 2014, looks like I'm set for great movie watching year.

I really need to finish that damned Top-250 this year.

Come one, come all. Happy new year filmGAF.

Any interesting articles on 2014 in film? What can we expect?

Anyway, 12 Years a Slave was pretty great. Brutal, honest and emotional. McQueen is 3 for 3; one of my favorites of the year without a doubt.

Going to try to write a little something about each film I watch in here. I don't watch that many films so it should be doable. Started a Letterboxd account for the new year. Keeping track of films over three different websites now :/

Last movie I watched in 2013 was . Goddamn was it good, I inhaled every second of it.

I think there's a case to be made for a Taxi Driver-style ending, with the scene where Guido leaves the screening and drives away with his dream woman. Would have made a lot of sense from a dramaturgical standpoint.

The way Fellini wrapped it up was riskier and maybe not as smooth, but the final parade makes up for it, a last stroke of genius to end with a bang.

Did you get around to watching 'I'm a Cyborg but that's OK'? If yes, how'd you like it?

I did and I liked it! I loved the surreal touches and the visuals, as well as the integration of real life and her 'fantasies'. I didn't like it as much as most of his other movies, but it was a very cute little film. My next Chan wook Park film will be JSA.

I had some hopes for 'I'm a cyborg but that's OK', given the premise and director, but i have to say i found it insufferable.

JSA is great, loved it, not even the same ballpark as that Cyborg movie.

Justin and the Knights of Valour 2013, terribly written animated movie. Many failed attempts at humour, uninteresting characters and pacing problems throughout.

After your proclaimed love for Gravity, I was very surprised to see it just miss the boat in your top 10 for 2013!
The #1 was no surprise
;)

I know, it was so, so, so close. I actually moved it out at the last second. I loved the experience, but had one too many qualms (which I did exclaim after I saw it). Anyways, thanks for reading it!

- I saw American Hustle day after Christmas. I thought the acting was great, especially Christian Bale, but overall, it just didn't feel as enjoyable as the movies it was emulating (Goodfellas, Casino, etc.) It took a while for it to really get...I don't know, fun or juicy or something.

- Watched Lincoln again on Blu Ray. Still quite enjoyed it. DDL's Lincoln is no less powerful the second time around.

- Rented two Blu Rays from my library: Willow (seen a couple of times) and Take Shelter (never seen). As is typical with my library rentals, I'll probably watch the one I've already seen, while renewing the one I haven't until they say I can't then I return it without watching. I'll let you know how that all goes!

First movie i (re)watched in 2014: Flash Gordon.

I love this type of sets and costumes a lot.
I wish modern space opera movies would take them as inspiration more, with the flashy colors and eclectic visuals, even when using ILM levels CGI.

Also contrary to the cartoon or comics, Flash is very endearing in this movie, he seems like a kid in a man's body.

Well, i would watch Take Shelter, it's pretty good.

I think Take Shelter is more than 'pretty good'. Highly recommended. Don't skip it, it's fantastic.
don't judge me on my terrible jokes

I saw Percy Jackson Sea of Monsters the other day, probably the worst movie I've seen in a long, long time. Since it's based on a book I don't know how much of the movie's awfulness is because of the book and how much is the script, but good lord what a waste of time.

I was just baffled at how bad it was. Percy Jackson is an utterly unlikable egocentric douchebag with daddy issues. The irony is that the antagonist is exactly the same - a douchebag kid angry at his daddy because his daddy has been neglecting him, and as revenge wants to destroy the world. Because nothing says "I'm angry with you, daddy" like destroying the world. The plot is absurd with many forced themes of discrimination, family values, forgiveness, friendship and other trivial trite that made me cringe thoughout. Also absurd product placements from UPS among others, the entire scene with Hermes [played by Nathan Fillion] was so surreal I couldn't believe what I was watching.

Garbage/10.

I just watched Take Shelter. It was streaming On Demand from Fear.net, which (spoilers?) I find a bit odd since the movie isn't traditional horror. I'm not even sure if it qualifies as suspense.

Anyway, it was an interesting movie but I think it had some annoying flaws. The pacing is slow to the point it feels indulgent. Two hours probably could have been 90 minutes.

Visually it's terrific. The dream sequences were exciting and imposing. Southern Ohio is gorgeous and all the wide shots of land were very pretty.

Zodd looks old as hell. I had a hard time accepting him as a young father. Kenny Powers' girlfriend is in the movie and her boobs don't get any screentime.

The concept of whether Zodd's visions are prophetic or symptoms of madness is not explored to my satisfaction. Slight spoiler
Aside from the ambiguous ending, is there any reason at all to believe that the dreams and visions are real? Zodd has a family history of mental illness and none of the earlier prophecies come true except maybe his friend attacking him. I feel like the nature of the visions are supposed to be mysterious but their nature is actually clearly mental illness except for the intentionally vague ending.

Good movie, I enjoyed it.

Good movie, I enjoyed it.

I always took for granted that
the visions (as well as the ending) were somewhere between an hallucination and a visual metaphor for his illness, until someone suggested here, that there's no reason to believe he actually doesn't have super powers to predict storms.. or something.
I like my explanation better though, so i'll stick to it.

Simon Killer was a rather intriguing way to kick off a new year of film watching. The thing I found pretty fascinating about the film was that it always felt like it was inches away from becoming a full-blown psychological horror film. Lending to the film's rather tense atmosphere is a script that drip-feeds revelations about the kind of guy Simon is at a solid pace, as well as rather inspired camera work that features an interesting use of stationary cameras that focus on midsections of the various characters (including a particularly memorable dance scene), as well as slasher-influenced POV shots for when Simon is out and about. Brady Corbet's lead performance is good, but the supporting cast left a bit to be desired, especially when the film makes the unwise decision to focus on small scenes involving them without Simon's presence, which I've never been too keen on in more psychologically-inclined films, particularly ones where the perspective of the lead is such an important part of how it proceeds. Even with those missteps, however, it kept me engaged throughout its duration, and it certainly gives you a lot to chew on afterward as you look back on the film after its secrets are laid bare.

Glad you liked it :) Found it creepier than most horror or psych thrillers because of how relatable this to-be-sociopath is.

One of us, one of us!

Oh what the hell.

I watched The Way Way Back yesterday

Awesome movie, great acting from Sam Rockwell and pretty much the entire cast. The writing was top notch. The movie, despite having a somewhat sad backbone, is remarkably hopeful. The contrast between Duncan's home life and his life at the water park was done really, reminding me of certain aspects of my childhood. I also have to mention that the music was ace.

Overall, great movie. Won't win any major awards but it's a great watch regardless.

so letterboxd says that I've watched 291 films in 2013. I set out to watch at least 365, so I guess I've failed.

top 10 non-2013 movies of 2013:
1. Hannnah and Her Sisters
2. Happy Together
3. The Innocents
4. Pale Flower
5. Only Yesterday
6. Big Trouble in Little China
7. My Neighbour Totoro
8. Breaking the Waves
9. Under the Skin
10. All About Eve

Made my whole family watch Once Upon a Time in the West

We're a Paki family, there minds were blown when they realized Sholay (Bollywood film) "borrowed" from this, LOL

I did a movie marathon and watched an ungodly amount of movie
I'm lonely during the holidays, so movies become my go to pleasure

Caught up with like 15+ movies I missed out on during the year

You're next - great slasher flick, but it falls apart towards the end
Gravity - totally loved it
The Hobbit - loved it more than LOTR
Elysium - generic sci-fi movie, environments reminded me of Mass Effect, Halo and some Crysis thrown in for good measure

My dad loves Sholay. I should show him that western.

Just remind him Once Upon release in 1969, Sholay 1975...

So he can't use the desi logic, that it Once copied it lol

He will have his mind blown within the first 30 minutes of him going, I've seen this before lol

Sholay was a great movie, I don't watch desi movies at all anymore but I loved Sholay

Well if you are going to borrow from a Great Movie that is Once Upon....

Your movie is going to be good too, helps the actors did an amazing fucking job

The last movie I saw in 2013 was Bling Ring. What a waste of time that was.

The movie is only 90 minutes, but it should have lasted 20. I think there was an episode in one of those cop procedural shows that did it better (and in 40 minutes, which is much more appropriate for the subject matter). Totally boring waste of a movie.

I saw a trailer for SHOLAY 3D re-release when i was in india last week, the 2d trailer wasn't very effective showing the changes.

My new years resolution - manage my time better so I'm able to watch more films while juggling the necessities of life, study, and work.

Also post in these threads more. Always too lazy to post my impressions here and just write a shitty write-up on letterbox'd.:/

Elysium.
I thought it was pretty generic, the ending was stupid and Kruger (played by Sharlto Copley) made me laugh out loud several time. Not because his character was funny, because he overplayed it.
3/6

The Hobbit. The Desolation of Smaug.
I didn't really like the first Hobbit movie. I found it boring, uninteresting characters and way to long, so I wasn't really excited for the sequel. I liked it more than the first, but I still think it suffers from the same problems as the first: Boring, lack of interesting characters and again, way to long.
3/6

Prisoners
I actually just stumbled upon this movie, having heard nothing of it, but I was pleasently surprised. I really liked Hugh Jackman performance in this movie and his character overall. Jake Gyllenhaal was amazing as well. Great movie.
4-5/6

Elysium

By the numbers sci fi and a waste of talent really. The director Blomkamp still has a great eye for CGI which is one of the few positives I give this film.

Well same here. My main problem is that I end up going on the internet in my off time too damn much reading about stuff instead of actually watching movies or playing games. So here goes, the first film in 2014.

Fruitvale Station

This is for me one of those films that leaves you sitting in silence, just thinking about what you just saw for a while. Before this film came to my attention I never heard of the story of Oscar Grant III and I must say his story really hit me, especially the facts Ryan Coogler (the director) shows the viewers before the credits roll made me some what angry. About the film then, it's basically the last 24 hours of Oscars life. Starting of very raw with cell phone footage from the incident itself. We see Oscar going about his daily business, over the course of the day I really got the feeling I was getting to know Oscar who is brilliantly portrayed by Michael B. Jordan. With a shaky film trough the whole film we see Oscar trying to solve personal problems with his girlfriend and job. We see him running errands for family, Coogler really made work of showing who Oscar Grant was. Though maybe he's gone a bit overboard by showing so much of his good side, because in the end Oscar wasn't your average good guy. I felt like the shaky cam worked really well for this film, it made things more personal. The soundtrack was very low key, except for some scenes in Oscars car there wasn't too many music present. Despite the fact you know how this story ends the film keeps being interesting the whole way trough. But the last act is truly this films best part, those last twenty minutes just slapped me right in the face. A very raw portrayal about an incident that should have never happened.

8/10

I'm reverting to a fly-by format for movie impressions from now on: those Letterboxd reviews I did could vary in quality and took too much effort given the outcome.

Wolf Children (English Dub)
This is one of the best animated films to have come out of Japan since Spirited Away. Phenomenal piece of work, which at times is really emotionally harrowing. The last act might divide a few opinions but I am sure all will agree that the first hour more than makes up for anything.

Snatch
Brad Pitt steals the show. Probably his career best, up there with Fight Club and Tree of life. Endlessly quotable with an amazing cast performance. Quentin Tarantino eat your heart out.

I gotta remember to start posting in here again. Only been posting a fraction of what Ive been viewing and that was in the netflix thread.
