Saw Godard's Breathless yesterday, didn't love it or anything but it captivated me all the same. Definitely gonna rewatch after sinking my teeth into more of these French new wave films. What should I watch next in his filmography?

I logged 25 last month. Let's see in summary my top ten includes an epic family drama, Captain Kirk as a white supremacist, some tentacle porn, a joyride, one pissed off sword dude, some bad gambling decisions, Stacey Keach all insane and shit, too much wang, Luke Skywalker in WW2 and one bad ass drum solo.

1. Fanny & Alexander
2. The Intruder
3. Possession
4. Thelma & Louise
5. The Sword of Doom
6. Hard Eight
7. The Ninth Configuration
8. Antichrist
9. The Big Red One
10. 1990: The Bronx Warriors

Alright you fuckers, I just bought Miami Vice. I've only seen 3 Mann films - Thief, which is fanfuckingtastic, Collateral which is pretty great, and Public Enemy, which I found to be one of the most boring movies I've ever seen (this was pre-woke film fan omgkitty).

They've tricked you. You wasted your money.

The obvious recommendations are Contempt, Pierrot le fou, Band of Outsiders, but personally I didn't like those movies as much (or rather, at all :lol). The only Godard film that rivals Breathless for me is Vivre sa Vie, which I thought was very good.

Hmmmmmmm, I'm not gonna stop you, but MV makes a lot more sense when you see the run of movies leading up to it, and even then it's super divisive. So, like, don't yell at us if you don't like it you're wrong.

One thing I'll say is how much I loved how they handled the relationship between Sonny and Rico. They've both been doing this shit for way too long, but the implied history that they share makes it really easy to believe that they can talk business while still knowing that they have each others back. That moment there is about as explicit as the respect and friendship that they share gets in the entire film, and it manages to speak volumes.

These are dudes who have coffee at the breakfast table while discussing their undercover identities. They finish each other's thoughts, they're jaded, and in too deep. Talking is overrated. Pensive stares and fist bumps under purple skies.

Breathless was pretty much the film that got me into films. At that point, I'd never seen anything like it, and was quite frankly, blown away. I'm not sure I really loved it or anything, it just startled me. I would assume people in the 60's probably felt the same way when they first saw it. Still haven't watched it again since then.

Should watch heat and insider too for sure. Those are his best. Although Miami Vice is right after those two in the rankings imo. With Mohicans and thief behind it.

I like that more people are starting to see the light with vice. It's one of those movies that has gotten retroactively praised. At the time of release it got pretty middling reviews. I wonder if blackhat will get the same treatment years from now. That one was just ripped critically.

Also I've been looking for the fist bump gif for a while now so bless up for that post earlier in the thread

Well, you gotta see Heat, obviously, but don't sleep on The Jericho Mile. It was his first movie (a TV movie, actually) and it's really, really good! I never hear it discussed whenever Mann's movies come up, but it's worth watching.

And I'm in the "Miami Vice is a masterpiece" camp, for what it's worth.

The dopeness of Miami Voce overcomes it's storytelling faults. omgkitty you gotta watch Heat, Manhunter, and Last of the Mohicans, too.

Black hat is one of those movies that will be remembered as "oh yea that director also made this movie" rather than standing on its own as a good film. It deserved its reviews

Wait Mann directed last of the mohicans? Welp guess I know what my favorite Mann movies is.

I'd say either Une femme est une femme (hilarious and inventive musical comedy), Band of Outsiders (the epitome of FNW cool), or Vivre sa vie (Godard's heaviest and most hypnotic film up to that point). Others in that early to mid 60s period all fall somewhere between good and masterful. But amazing as Alphaville and Contempt and Pierrot le Fou are I don't think they're good first Godards.

I saw Contempt on a Cinefix list and it looked kinda interesting. I'll watch that after Vivre sa Vie. Thanks for the rec!

I'd be game for a musical comedy so I'll watch that instead of Contempt, especially if you reckon I should hold off on it.

Wow you need to see Heat.

Vivre Sa Vie is my personal favorite, although Pierrot le Fou and Band of Outsiders are more in line with Breathless.

Also check out Alphaville and A Woman is a Woman

The Girl With All the Gifts: I didn't read the book, but judging by its release date and the plot of this movie, my uneducated guess is that it completely ripped off The Last of Us, and then the filmmakers spliced in some 28 Weeks Later DNA bring it to life on screen.

The highlight for me was Glen Close's performance, which made me realize that she is currently, at 70, a more credible action movie actor than Arnold Schwarzenegger or Sylvester Stallone. This one is her Linda Hamilton in Terminator 2, or at least her Liam Neeson in Taken.

Checked out the unrated version of The Wolverine. Never going back to the theatrical cut; added action is all fantastic. As for the film itself, the wackiness is a lot more noticeable but it's still a lot more interesting in its filmmaking than most modern superhero movies. Also, it's really fun. Underrated gem of the X-Men franchise.

You guys are starting to make me question my decision to skip Miami Vice back during its original release.

One of the all time greats for sure. Herrmann was on a different level when it came to composing. I mean, Vertigo is amazing and everything, but the score is a huge component of it. Once the movie starts with the first few notes of the score playing which leads straight into the title sequence I become transfixed, it's this transcending movie moment that reminds you why you love film in the first place.

Yes! The film is very good on it's own of course, but with the score it turned a very good movie into a great one for me. It's cause of the music, it left such an impression on me.

High and Low.

"Half-thriller, half-procedural probes class differences in post-war Japan. All Kurosawa. All brilliant. "
Holy Shit, this fucking movie. I adored Seven Samurai and have it in my top 10 but after seeing this Kurosawa masterpiece, im left speechless. What an amazing thriller/police procedural. This might just be my favorite Kurosawa film, the pacing and writing is amazing. I love how likable and smart the characters are and was on the edge of my seat after the first 20 minutes! This sits on my top 10 as of now. Still need to digest on what I saw. Highly Recommend!!!!!!

The Love Witch 2016
★★½
Awesome use of colors, costume design, and unique atmosphere. Unfortunately the story, acting, and length of the film bring it down. It fails to outdo the movies it pays homage too. I couldn't help but feel bored and sleepy once that fantasy scene hit.

Amazing movie. How about that final shot?

After a month long break, I return to the world of Zatoichi with the 14th entry of the series, Zatoichi's Pilgrimage:

Zatoichi's solemn and regretful side over his life of killing has been one of his more compelling--and underutilized--characteristics. So when this film set itself up to be a pilgrimage to various temples across the country where Ichi plans to repent for his life by the blade, all while vowing not to kill another soul on the journey, I was pretty excited. Not only was that a premise that would explore the more interesting side of the character, but structurally it would make the film rather unique, and I would imagine lead to some creative action set-pieces where Ichi is forced to get creative in order to avoid killing. Unfortunately, the film abandons this premise after the first act in favor of a standard plot where Ichi is bound to a single town and must kill a horde of goons in order to protect some of the kinder residents.

The movie is further dragged down by an abundance of exposition, which only multiplied my disappointment from what the lean initial premise suggested. Disappointment aside it's still a fairly solid entry in the series, exposition overload aside. It's beautifully filmed, has a fun villain, and the climactic battle feels a little more tense than usual.

Still though, what we could have gotten instead...

Logan (2017) - ★★☆☆☆

First thing first. We get the violence we've always wanted from a R-rated Wolverine, and we get a kickass cool X-23, and probably Patrick's best performance as Charles Xavier. Not that the violence does much but it does add up to this heavy grounded feel throughout the roadtrip and you get that closer bond to Logan and the rest. It's actually quite personal, yet when you slice your way into the core there's not really that much of a plot. It's very simple and the most story comes from alternative ways of telling a character background. The biggest con is that the movie doesn't do much with the lore it has, the villain is yet again a forgettable and simple one and the pacing is many times too heavy and off and it keeps going when it could have gone a for a shorter runtime without losing anything. The movie was alright but the reason I give it 2 instead of 3 stars is, that when all is said and done, I don't wanna see this movie again and so I don't think I'll rewatch it in the coming years.

Y'know, for a GAF list this is actually quite good.

Shame Wilderpeople ain't in the top 10, though.

Wilderpeople is too good for this world.

My #1, Edge of Seventeen deserved a little higher, too, but 2016 went from worrying in the summer to incredible by the end, so it's understandable.

And with 57 posts from last month, I'm so sorry for subjecting you guys to all that, haha.

Pretty happy with Arrival being #1. Thought it was a great movie.

Pretty surprised to see The VVitch that high as well. Was pretty meh on it.

Pretty surprised Deadpool wasn't higher here on GAF tbh.
I'm the exact opposite. I thought Arrival was very average which was disappointing as I have really liked all of his movies so far. I loved The Witch and Deadpool was one of the worst CBM movies last year to me. Also Wilderpeople was disappointing, it just wasn't funny. I'm a bit worried about Thor since it seems like Taika's humor doesn't fit with mine.

honestly 2017 is already better than 2016 for me. return of the blockbusters.

same thing for games as well. great year for media content.

At least it's in the top 20.
Embrace of the Serpent was my number 1, and it's 41 on the list.

My number 1 is at 66. That almost makes me the biggest loser in this poll, if not for the lone wolf who gave 10 points to Passengers. Bless up to that madman.

It also tied with Little Sister and Nocturama. I hadn't heard of the former, but I do very much want to see the latter. It got some intriguing reviews at film fests last year.

Better for big studio pictures for sure. Remains to be seen whether it can top 2016 in terms of quality tho, because last year was great for movies imo.

very true, but Lego batman, wick 2, and get out. lawd. 3 for 3.

anybody watched I Don’t Feel at Home in This World Anymore?

I thought 2016 was a great year for film. Unfortunately for me, it's always felt like the Wii U of film years. A lot of consistent greatness but nothing that really sets me ablaze in excitement... besides Suicide Squad, of course.

There needed to be a lot more stuff like Neon Demon, hell a lot more horror in general. It was a pretty lame year for horror with my favorite horror film being The VVitch which is the weakest entry in the "artsy fartsy horror movie of the year" that's been a thing as of late. Also found Don't Breathe disappointing.

BUT THIS YEAR WE GET SAW SO IT'S ALL LOOKING PRETTY AWESOME

It was a pretty lame year for horror

the witch
the wailing
Train to Busan
Green Room
They Look Like People
evolution
don't breathe
under the shadow
the eyes of my mother
I Am The Pretty Thing That Lives In The House
10 Cloverfield Lane

And then Without Name and The Ornithologist which i haven't seen but look damn fine.

Nah, it was a good year for horrors.
Especially if you count less good, but still sort of decent stuff, like LightsOut or that Ouija Origins movie.
