Watch 31 horror movies in October! Feel free to join in! It's a lot of spooky fun! etc etc!

31 Days of Horror 6 |OT| The October Movie Marathon

Remember:

DO NOT just post the title of the movie you wratched. It isn't conducive at all to the kind of discussion & communication we want to engender here, because it tells us nothing of you, the movie, the impact of the latter on the former. Post scores, descriptions, essays, poems, gifs, hashtags, whatever provides you the best outlet for personal expression, you unique little digital snowflake. Also, Marvel movies are mostly shit. - icarus-daedelus

September thread.

May watch something tonight but at the moment:

1) Down by Law
2) Fish Tank
3) Sicario
4) Beautiful City
5) The Marquise of O

Top 5 of the month:

1) Through a Glass Darkly
2) La Dolce Vita
3) Blood and Black Lace
4) Stagecoach
5) Summer With Monika

Pretty much gonna be all horror this month for me. I'm sure a few normal person movies will sneak in though.

1. Hunt for the Wilderpeople (absolutely wonderful, Tails Waititi is definitely going on my must-watch director's list)
2. Audrey & Daisy
.
.
.
.
.
3. The Conjuring 2
4. The Shallows

And quite a few rewatches.

Should have quite a number of new watches this month thanks to 31 days of horror.

Dark Horse

I liked it, mostly for Selma Blair and Todd Solondz doing his Solondzian thing, but it might have been a little too off for me to like it a lot. I finally have Wiener-Dog, so that might be the next thing I watch!

As for best films of September, I saw Green Room and Hell or High Water, so it was a great month. I plan on watching everything I missed over the summer this month, so that should be fun (although it sounds like the summer wasn't so fun).

2) The Handmaiden
3) Elle
4) A Monster Calls
5) Toni Erdmann

Honorable Mentions: Indignation, Paterson

I won't be watching much in October but I will be catching up on some older flicks in a couple weeks so long as work cooperates. Likely won't hit the Wall of Shame again until next September.

Back on the wall of shame for the first time in a long time...

Top 5 in September:

1. 2001: A Space Odyssey
2. Hara-kiri
3. Happiness
4. Embrace of the Serpent
5. Welcome to the Dollhouse

Worst in September:

1. Blair Witch

September was pretty weak for me:
1. Lethal Weapon
2. The Blair Witch Project
3. The Magnificent Seven (2016)
4. Wiener-Dog
5. Blair Witch

Looking forward to better movies being released through the rest of the year.

So a total of 48 movies for September. I went nuts watching horror flicks for the last half of the month.

1. Cannibal Holocaust
2. Rabid Dogs
3. Blood Feast
4. Magnificent Seven 2016
5. High Rise

Can't say I watched anything new in September. Except for Spawn (1997) and ARQ (2016), I think. The second I discussed in the related thread. Good writing, falls for Alex Garland syndrome (yes, I fucking hated Ex Machina, fuck subtext. Okay I didn't actually 'hate' it, but it was disappointing aside from strong visuals with nothing to really hold it together. Neither story nor subtext). I don't think I need to explain that one, right? Spawn then: visually something probably not seen before at that time -I watched it because of Roger Ebert's review- but it's so quaint now that we see a comic book movie like that every other week. Still, it tries to be a real thing among all the comic book wannabe's and clown is great. The CG not so much.

Rewatched Blade movies and Bourne movies instead. Blade is Blade, though the second one being a Guillermo Del Toro movie definitely shows, with the main vamp leaning over some 'mad science' type vials which is a very familair shot when looking at Pacific Rim. I never realized before that Ron Perlman is his regular though. Yeah, I know, "what", but somehow I had not connected those two things. Also, counter-counter move alpha! You know which scene. If you don't, watch the second movie.
The first movie is surprisingly stylish though. It holds up well, despite 90s CG. Like, they really wanted to sell that movie despite the limitations. The Toro movie has greater fluidity in some of its action scenes due to newer film tech though. The third as well, basically Goyer trying too hard (both in good and bad ways, you know: good in terms of calling out previous writing, bad in terms of directing style at times), but I never really hated it like most critics or people seem to do. I like the concept of Dracula just being tired of it all (and I never disliked the actor either, which I remember some people really being into - hating John Doe that is), kind of like Apocalypse in X-Men but without the world-ending desire. I do feel he was slightly undersold as 'epic warrior' though. But then of course, this movie does have prime Jessica Biel. Also man-abs, if you're into that. And unfortunately, a mild tendency to go for 'moments', which reminded me of Man of Steel and BvS in their form. Hmm.

Bourne movies: Identity: still awesome, probably the best of them. Supremacy: best soundtrack, and Karl Urban. And Greengrass shaky cam turning into vomit because I'm older now and somehow can't handle that shit anymore. Ultimatum: thankfully less shaky cam, good conclusion to the Damon trilogy. Legacy: MEEEEEDS! also sniping a drone, like, wow, that Hawkeye factor. Action flows well though, without the need for shaky cam. Also, the control room angle was less 'stalker mob' like the first three where people get whacked left and right for no good reason and made a bit more sense in Legacy compared to the other three movies. Edward Norton and Stacy Keach were good additions to that part.
But what's really interesting about watching them all in a row is the increasing tension between better technology available in the mainstream that really starts to stretch believability to the point where you can wonder (especially in Ultimatum) if you're watching a spy movie or a conspiracy nut nightmare on steroids. It's a really bizarre effect to see how much that influences the writing and whether you're willing to believe any character even has a chance to evade detection. That said, the best part of Ultimatum was Bourne leading another character to behave as he would do, which is a great sequence to illustrate how he thinks and moves.

The same guy has made a movie called Tyrannosaur, and I'm curious about that one now, because Imdb has it rated at 7.7 or something. Should be good?

TOP 5 NEW VIEWS OF SEPTEMBER
1. Jurassic Park (1993)
2. The Innocents (2016)
3. A Face in the Crowd (1957)
4. Caged (1950)
5. Edge of Tomorrow (2014)

Deepwater Horizon (2016): Compared to 2016's other recent disaster movie, Sully, the saga of the Deepwater Horizon is a lot more movie-friendly, and it's a pretty solid movie overall. Of the current crop of Hollywood stars, few are as good at the blue collar schtick as Mark Wahlberg. As an avid Jane the Virgin fan, it was great to see Gina Rodriguez on the big screen in a fairly substantial role. God bless whatever that accent John Malkovich was doing was.

like, I only watched Bridget Jones this month and liked it

my taste is deteriorating, I might reach JC's levels omg

this wouldn't never happen if CFK was still here

or still alive

You've probably been avy quoted a million times since you switched to Sadfleck, but damn does this post call for another one. I won't do it though, cause I'm not a sheep. Stay woke.

I watched a lot of dope stuff in September. I'm not gonna list them though. Cause like I said, I'm not a sheep. STAY WOKE.

Looking forward to watching the new scan of The Thing this month. With any luck it'll actually start snowing by then and I can watch it in VR for maximum immersion.

top new watches of september:

1. pusher ii: with blood on my hands
2. sunset boulevard
3. the assassin
4. johnny guitar
5. i saw the devil

Went to see Deepwater Horizon last night.

This is your typical based on true events disaster movie. I actually didn't recall a lot of the lead up to the actual explosion. Really just remember the almost nightly view of the broken pipe spewing oil into the Gulf of Mexico.

There's the usual background of the main character, in this case Mike Williams, the "VT" on the rig. We get the gratuitous Kate Hudson in black panties butt shot (which although unnecessary was certainly appreciated lol). As with most disaster movies, however, it's more about the events leading up to the actual disaster than it is about the characters/people who are trying to survive said impending disaster. So while the movie gets high ratings for the special effects and the stunts pulled off when all hell breaks loose (and seriously, if you want to see all hell break loose, then this movie has it in spades), the feelings of sympathy for those lost is muted by the fact that you really never know them above a quick hand-wave and brotherly banter from Wahlberg as he gets on the rig.

The oil company execs are displayed in the worst light, as they should be, as this entire incident was caused by the need to generate profit and so corners were cut... to disastrous effect.

Overall, I'd give the movie a 7/10. Pretty powerful in its FX and at least emotional enough for the couple of people who are followed as they fight to survive, but an extra 20 or so minutes of background on some of the other characters might have strengthened things. They also tried--at some points unsuccessfully--to dumb down the technical aspects of oil drilling in the water, but there were points were I was like "I don't understand what they're talking about."

Hey everyone! I hope it's not against the rules to put this here, but this site has a few very recent award winning European films online and free to watch until the 9th of October (you just need to make an account, but its made by Arte so I guess it should be cool).
So far, out of the ten films from the website, I couldn't access three (including Seidl's Safari and Serra's The Death of Louis XIV), but I don't know if that's just a matter of timing. You can find there great films like Suntan (Argyris Papadimitropoulos), Wild (Nicolette Krebitz), A Good Wife (Mirjana Karanovic), the animation The Girl Without Hands (Sébastien Laudenbach) and the rare Bella e Perduta (Pietro Marcello).
Bella e Perduta actually was no. 3 on my Movies of the Year for 2015 as I was lucky enough to see it at its premiere in Locarno last year. Outside of festivals, the film has been struggling in a long fight with distribution so I think this is an amazing opportunity not to miss this film. Here's what I wrote in my Top 10 from last year:

3. Lost and Beautiful (Pietro Marcello)

Each year there is a film that takes me completely by surprise and makes me say "I've never seen anything like this before", and I've seen a lot of films. That's exactly how I felt in 2014 at Cannes Film Festival at the premiere of The Tribe. Surrounded by amazing films and amazing filmmakers, there it was, this film by a director I've never heard of before (funnily enough I had seen a short film by him before but it definitely didn't ring the bell at that time) that totally blew me away. Well, in 2015 the same thing happened with Lost and Beautiful (or Bella e perduta), a film by Pietro Marcello, a documentary director whose previous films I've enjoyed before, but did not prepare me for this amazing film. It combines documentary and fiction in a way I've never thought it was possible. I don't wanna say too much about it. Hell, I don't even think I would know how or what. It is such a beautiful and unique film that I think should definitely be experienced first hand. Unfortunately, out of all the films in this list, this will probably be the least advertised or shown anywhere… so I'm urging you, please go and watch this film if by any chance there's a screening around you (which unfortunately is HIGHLY UNLIKELY as the film was even taken out of theatres in its second week in Italy - it's origin country) or if you find it anywhere on the internet (don't worry, the director is known to support this practice, but obviously if there's any other alternative - cinema, dvd, bluray, etc. please support the film)!

I really would prefer to see Safari at home than at a film festival 2 hours away from me. Let me know if it shows up online, I wouldn't mind renting. I'm in UK btw, in case there's a region thing.

I'll keep Lost And Beautiful on my radar.

Top 5 new watches of September:
1. The Red Shoes
2. To Have and Have Not
3. Picnic at Hanging Rock
4. X-Men: Apocalypse
5. The Light Between Oceans

Best rewatches:
2001: A Space Odyssey (70mm)
Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory
25th Hour
The Departed
The Outlaw Josey Wales

It was a better month for rewatches.

I don't think there's a region lock (I'm also from UK). I'm reading now more about ARTE Kino (more info here) and they describe it as a "first edition of a new totally free online European film festival". They have 10 films this year and there is an audience award of 50.000 Euros for the winning film.
Given the way they formulate things I think there's a number of limited views per film (they keep mentioning "booking" and when i "booked" my free online ticket for Lost and Beautiful it told me I have 24 hours to see it). So the Safari thing might be just a sort of "out of tickets" thing. I don't know if it's for the day or for the rest of the period (though I doubt it given that it just started). You should have when you go on the festival website (mentioned in my above post) on some films the label "Available tickets"... I assume those are not fully booked for the day.

Q the Winged Serpent. Ahh that's the sound of October and horror movie screams. Tis the season. I picked this because I've seen it mentioned here and there but little did I know just how good this really was. Yeah the monster effects are more Harryhausen but that's a good thing. I love these old stop motion monster flicks. The cast was damn good in this too. There's actually quite a bit of story in this monster movie and it all ties together nicely.

Not October.

OP is a bullshit artist!

this wouldn't never happen if CFK was still here

or still alive
When I posted it was October over here in the future! Bunch of crybabies!

also I miss CFK :c

---

Star Tek Beyond - Better than expected! Fun writing, decent action, great alien/spaceship designs. Kinda burns out at the end but at least the ride was entertaining.
Verhoeven vs Verhoeven - A short Dutch documentary which is basically De Palma with Verhoeven on Verhoeven but less interesting and less well made.
Elle - Lots of fun. Some really dark satire. Very moody. Great leading performance. Still digesting this one.

Watched only 8 movies in september.

1. X-Men Apocalypse
2. The Neon Demon
3. Captain America: Civil War
4. Time Lapse
5. Now You See Me 2

Weak month...

Only watched 3 films in September (woops):

1. The Seventh Seal
2. We Are The Best!
3. Knight of Cups

I never post in here but I'll definitely try to watch more movies and post more often!

I "booked" Lost And Beautiful and Wild. I'll watch them and wait to see when Safari comes out.

Embrace of the Serpent and Ordet were my favorite watches of September.
Followed by Hunt for the Wilderpeople and Leningrad Cowboys Go America.

read the FAZ review on woody allen's amazon miniseries and boy, the critic was not happy

guess i'll have to see for myself, though

Cafe Society - Woody Allen

A frustrated love tale, a theme recurrent in several Allen movies. The background is the 30's, Hollywood and New York. You can hear Allen voice through bits and pieces of several different characters. Storaro work is very dynamic, lots of movement and playing a lot with the set in the process. Really liked the final minutes of the movie.

Any of you watched Luke Cage yet? Is it worth the time investment?
Keep in mind that the only part i liked about Daredevil were the action stunts/fights and D'Onofrio hamming it way up, and that i don't care about superhero comics lore.
I avoided JJ already for that reason.

Anyway, i'm half thinking of watching some horror (not the 31 days thing, couldn't make it happen logistically).
Netflix without VPN has all garbage though, aside from a couple of good ones.

Kill Baby Kill. Bava-thon continues as I clear my way through what I've not watched on Shudder. Pretty cool ghost story.
