MS deal with NFL supposedly cost $400 Million

It's a huge deal for MS. Seriously, it's worthing it. Remember this was the price of Rareware. 5 Madden games are probably worthing more than Rare's output since Kameo and except Perfect Dark XBLA.

They will be basically sure to win US... But yeah, it's worth nothing outside the US. Sorry guys, you are the only ones to like this sport.

Edit! misread news. Sorry, it's nothing hten! :)

It looks like to start it'll be fantasy football tracking and the sort, but more importantly for Microsoft eventually NFL games will be filled with Windows 8 tablets and Microsoft branding.
Ok, that makes some sense. They're going to be the NFL's communication partner basically. Nothing wrong with that. Its certainly not much to be excited about as a consumer, but its not something to bash them for. Its a very smart advertising move.

I live in the UK. Why the fuck should I give a shit about the NFL? Or the TV feedthrough? Or anything else similarly US centric that was announced?

Rhetorical question, btw.

Yeah the box seems very US focused.

But they did show FIFA so that should be enough for the rest of the world right ;)

Do you mean Madden console games? Because this deal has nothing to do with those as far as I know. It's for streaming of live NFL games, is it not?

Uhh...This won't get them Madden.

Yeah overall for a company competing with Apple and Google to get market penetration for Windows 8/Surface it makes sense.

LOL @ football

cmon microsoft i could do so much more with that kind of money... Wheres ALAN WAKE 2!?!?!

Remedy's already working on a XB1 game, I wouldn't expect Alan Wake 2 for a while.

Microsoft will find ways to market to other areas, too. This is just their one major way to do it in the US, their home market.

If Sony developed a major technical partnership with something very Japan-centric, it would be the same thing. Its a marketing thing.

Question is, will Canada and Europe even have access to this NFL stuff?

Going ahead with US centric only deals on a Next-Gen console to supposedly to take over the world = hmmmmmm not gonna happen

Sony will sit back and watch them do these kinds of things all day if it means they can continue to expand their development studios. How much did Sony buy Sucker Punch and Media Molecue for? How much will they eventually buy Quantic Dream for?

I look forward to seeing how much they paid the Premier League for the rights to do whatever they are going to do.

Normal TV broadcast rights in the UK are £1b per season as of next year.

I wouldn't be surprised if they do. All the NFL packages are better for people outside of America, it's a lot cheaper and there aren't blackouts so I don't see why they wouldn't allow you to track stats and follow NFL news or whatever they have planned.

Microsoft have deep pockets. I dont think people understand this doesn't have to be at the 'expense' of something else.

why look forward to 4 exclusive fleshed out games when I can get content for a sport I don't watch.

You think they'll actually have a game broadcast exclusively through the Xbox?

U6oPV.jpg

That is absolutely not going to happen.

This will be for stuff outside of the game. Maybe some behind the scenes stuff or enhanced interactivity (i.e. stats, and fantasy updates) when watching a game on TV through your Xbox One.*

That's really the extent of it.

This is interesting because it shows the scale of investment microsoft is making in the Xbox one.

Gonna have a fuck ton of exclusive games. I will be buying an xbone!

That's pretty cheap compared to the NFL. It's ridiculous how much the NFL get from the networks each year. Then Directv pays billions a year for the Sunday Ticket deal. That's why 400 million neither seems like a lot of money, nor do I expect much from it. It really does seem just like the exclusive fantasy sports doodad. That's about all 400 million will buy you from the NFL these days.

Deep pockets and shitty management. Look at what most of their money has been devoted to: Kinect, turning the Xbox into a giant DVR, creating a Halo television show, and partnering with the NFL. Sony has money to spend as well and you can bet your ass that they'll spend it more prudently.

How deep are their pockets?

There is still One advertising, twitch.tv, exclusive DLC, ???

Wonder how much this will pay off. But what's the point here? Do they really profit as much as they spend, or are they just trying to keep Sony down?

look at how much they spend for their Windows Phone, Surface marketing

Did they announce whether or not the NFL stuff was going to be behind a paywall other than the Xbox Live fees? Like, is it going to cost an additional $60 per season or something?

"Look guys! Your can track your fantasy team while you're watching the real thing!"

I don't give a shit about the real thing, let alone the fake stuff.

hahahahaha, damn how can a company do SO MUCH SHIT WRONG?

Question, can MS survive with only the USA? because that's what's going to happen, NO ONE ELSE will ever want a MS console.

Uh this NFL deal will move a shit ton of consoles. This is like the only thing some of my friends found awesome about the whole reveal.

Dude bros will eat this shit up, Xbox live/friendlist nfl football fantasy? Sold.

MS HW showcasing was pretty meh, but the potential is there on the operating side. See what they're cooking come E3.

You have no idea what their budget plan looks like, sorry.

I'm from the UK and only an - extremely - tiny minority even bother to drum up interest in American Football.

NFL, NBA, EA SPORTS!!! I really don't care at all for any of that. On top of that the TV stuff won't work here so... I guess the Halo TV series is the only interesting thing to take away from the conference.

That's 20 big-budget triple AAA titles or hundreds to thousands of indie games. Nice of you to show your true face, MS.

This... can't wait to have my fantasy teams overlay and use Skype to call up other teammates.

I understand many don't want or need this from a gamers perspective, but this will be huge in the states at the rate fantasy sports are growing and making money. Don't believe it, look up up FanDuel and other sites like that. Its the next online Vegas. Interactive sports and esupports is the next fuel for next gen. Games are becoming to expensive and risky to invest a good ROI, while stuff like this is money falling from the trees.

Could have made several games for that, and they would have appealed to people outside the US.

Instead they spent that on something that does not appeal to anyone in their second biggest market.

In all media, only true fans who consume every book, film, game, or pog collection deserve to know what's going on.

I ask this because I honestly do not know. What is the population of Europe? USA is roughly 300 Million people.

Just a realistic question, but do you use NFL.com for your fantasy football? Since I know that myself and the vast majority of fantasy football players do not.

Cross platform integration (i.e. CBS, ESPN, Yahoo) is most likely not a reality.

Can I ask how many games that covers? I don't even know how many games each team plays in the NFL each year let alone any of the finer details lol.

From this Forbes article the NFL rights went for $27b (£17.9b) for 9 years or about $3b (£1.98b) per season

In the UK Sky and BT signed up for a £3b ($4.5b) 3 year deal (£1b or $1.5b a year) to broadcast 154 games (of the 380 games per season that actually happen). That doesn't then include the FA Cup and League Cup games or any of the Champions League (about £150m per year for the UK alone).

My point being that this NFL thing will cover the entire US, but a similar deal for the EU and the most popular sport here would need separate deals with the English, Spanish, German, French, Italian Football Associations just for the more popular leagues. Though of those only the Spanish and English could command massive money.

I ask this because I honestly do not know. What is the population of Europe? USA is roughly 300 Million people.

The European Union is about 500million spread acorss 27 member states. The top 5 most populous nations of those 27 make up 314m or 63%.

82m in Germany
64m in UK
63m in France
59m in Italy
46m in Spain

You are right; they have run out of money on that deal and games are going to suffer because of it.

I still don't have a clue what the "deal" actually is, much like everything else we've heard about the Xbox One.
