Queens of the Stone Age??!?! Seriously, WTF.

This was a potential awesome year for early releases ... and almost all of them have been pretty mediocre (AudioSlave, NIN, SOAD (better than average), Foo Fighters).

'Lullabies' has been the big surprise for me. It's still gets a lot of play in my CD player.

What's yours so far?

Black Sheep Boy by Okkervil River.

Shinola by Ween will be the CD of the year though. Brown as fuck outtakes from The Pod era? Oh oh oh! I just came in my pants.

Naturally, the album I anticipate is going to be my aoty isn't out yet, so I can't really say I have a favorite... The one song I've heard is kind of weird, though. I'll see if that's a good thing when I hear the recorded version.

Dead

well not really...yet
Probably the new British Sea Power.

But the number of new albums I've heard this year can be counted on a hand and a half.

It's a tie between Coldplay and Queens for me, though when I look back at the end of the year, Queens may edge them just because I wasn't expecting much at all.

The biggest surprise for me this year though has been System of a Down.

The Decemberists' "Picaresque" is my 2005 winner by a mile so far. Get's more awesome every time I hear it. First month I had it I had no idea the second half of the album was so good because the first 5 songs kicked so much ass I had to start from the beginning again when "Bagman's Gambit" ended.

Looking over what I've bought this year that's new, I'd probably have to learn towards Thievery Corporation's The Cosmic Game. I didn't think too much of it when I bought it but I keep coming back to it, and it has a rather good range from what I expect from TC.

Of course, I fully expect Corgan's new one to take top honors in the end, but I still have a few more weeks before I can digest that entirely.

First time Eno has sang in over 10 years. First pop album he's done since the legendary Before and After Science.

maybe he can buy some real talent off ebay. pretentious noise is all he is.

Awww, sour grapes! Don't get upset at me, lad. I didn't give you your shitty taste. Blame yourself or blame god.

PS. I fall asleep jerking off to my vision of the greatest ever dream band: Atreyu fronted by Eno.

Also, have you ever even listened to Eno? In what ways does The Paw Paw Negro Blowtorch resemble Elliot Smith? How could he be trying to write lyrics like Elliot Smith when he hasn't written a lyric in over 25 years? Conceited prick? He has every right to be. Without him, U2 and Talking Heads would've never gone anywhere.

EDIT:

Hmmm. That looks enticing.

Are you going to post impressions tomorrow as well?

If I find it, I will. I have a feeling it won't actually hit stores until Wednesday. The whole 'Tuesday is the ship day thing.' It hasn't leaked either.

EDIT DEUX: Amazon says the 14th. Hmmm. Eno needs to be less enigmatic.

My favorite of the year is Sleater-Kinney's, I guess. Nothing really special, though.

Yeah that's probably my pick too, though I'm not gaga over new music like most in the music threads here, I usually listen to an artist I like for a while, dig up live stuff, etc. instead of listening to several new albums a week; the only new albums I'd wait out on the cold for would be anything by Cat Power or Mirah Not that there's anything wrong with new music of course.

What really depresses me is that all these Sleater-Kinney interviews and reviews keep mentioning how they've been together for ten years and I still remember listening to Corin Tucker in Heavens to Betsy and Carrie Brownstein in Excuse 17 (though unfortunately she wasn't the lead singer, Heavens to Betsy was very good and Excuse 17 not so much because their lead singer sucked, so the worlds colliding was perfect though they didn't truly hit their stride until Call the Doctor which imo is still their best album). /old :|

Dredg - Catch without arms

followed by 30 STM - A Beautifuel Lie, Coldplay - X & Y and Finch - Say Hello to Sunshine

Spoon's and BSP's are also pretty good. BSP pretty much put on the best show they could've for the last album, and I'll think highly of them forever just for that.

When I read the title of this thread my psychic powers informed me that the choice of the thread starter would be rather lame.

It's all about Beauty and the Beat, suckas.

I don't know yet, I just bought the new Coldplay album X & Y. It's really good, but who knows...

Probably System of a Down's Mezmerize or Queens of the Stoneage's Lullabies. I mean, both cds are good for driving, working out, or smoking weed so I guess that's what makes them so special.
