My Enthusia Impressions

So this game was 29.99 at Fry's today so I trundle on down there to pick it up along with Star Ocean 2, which I got for 14.99.

I figure since I have wheel out for GT4 why not.

I also liked some of the things I read in the previews, like that footage of real life vs. Enthusia going between those cones. Plus all that g-force indicator stuff and what not sounded kinda cool.

Anyway, I went through one race of Driving Revolution, Enthusia life and just plain old Free Race.

Driving Revolution is where they make you go through different courses hitting imaginary gates at the right speed, acceleration and what not. Actually there's like 4 or 5 color indicators representing different conditions of your car. Regardless, I failed miserably and didn't get one gate. Have to read the manual.

Enthusia life is career mode and unlike Forza, you start out with some pretty crappy cars - they give you 12 to start but hell, have of them are mini-vans. As expected these cars are pretty goddamn slow and not all that exciting to drive. After the race they show an overlay of the track with all your fuck ups, mine was littered with all those red stars indicating collisions.

I then jumped to Free Race and picked one of those cars that looks like it's from Super GT. Coincidently the first track to choose from in Free Race is kinda like that course Super GT where you go through the city catching air and going up ramps and what not. I thought this was pretty fun, it was really fast and I had those 'speed' effects going. I wouldn't call this 'arcade' mode, though, since I couldn't powerslide around the corners like I wanted :D

Again, I have to figure out what all these icons and indicators are but all in all it's not a bad game at all. Maybe it's a case of lowered expectations.

One thing you'll notice is that alot of the tracks in Enthusia are designed more like arcade racing tracks (lots of jumps and drift points) compared to those in GT or Forza which are designed to be more realistic. The one you're talking about sounds like Pacific Gateway which is the SFRush style track. Rev City is basically Ridge Racer. And Dragon Range is Initial D.

Reading that about the tracks makes me want to try this game. But if Forza and GT4 are not my kind of driving games, I should stay away from Enthusia, too, right?

If you don't have the wheel, you should definitely stay away.

I wouldn't think so. Both GT and Forza have heavy customization systems while Enthusia doesn't, meaning there's no parts for you to actually buy and put on your car. As you advance in Enthusia you car upgrades like a character would in an RPG. Tires, speed ect. all get better as yo ugo along, you don't have to buy specific parts. You also win cars differently, after each race you'll go to a screen where a list of cars that you just raced against are listed and when you press a button it'll come to a stop and the car it lands on is the one you'll win.

As far as gameplay goes, is it realistic? Yah but you can play it similar to an arcade game where you drift around alot. I wouldn't say its more forgiving than the other 2, its just that the courses are set up in a way that people who can't stand those 2 games could actually get into this one.

I think it was Rev City. Now I really have to try this Pacific Gateway, heh.
