Sad thing is they didn't even stand a chance

Studying IT, as well as having been to many cons, I can confirm they do exist in large numbers. My favorites are the ones who wear trench coats.

The nerdiest person in class 10 years ago would always have pins on their bookbag, hat, or both.

i wonder what ever happened to that guy at my school who wore a full suit, fedora and walked around with a cane. he was like the neckbeard king and they flocked around him wherever he went.

sounds like the first boss of a crappy American persona knockoff

He probably runs a very successful atheist YouTube Channel right now.

Buddhist monks? Your next door neighbour? The guy just off his psych meds? Me?

You must reincarnation of L.Ron Hubbard to have such confidence in you apprehension of ultimate reality.

* * *

A little critical thought and self understanding as well as exposure to a variety of people is the cure, BTW.

Haha are you serious? Do a quick image search of Buddhist monks and tell me what you see. It'll be a lot of orange and red robes. They wear those for a reason. And those are, well at least the ideal type they represent anyway, the people that should be the least concerned with sense and sensation.

What exactly do I need a cure for? The sentiment that people look at the world around them and form ideas based on their senses and what prior associations with certain sensations? Maybe I'm just too blinded by my L.Ron Hubbardness to see this, but I think it's a completely accurate statement bordering on the trivial.

No need to be rude.

And like I said, if a person is shallow enough to let a hat be such a strong accessory :D, enough to become some sort of barrier between them and other people, I think that a hat keeping a shallow person from wanting to socialize with a hat wearing one is not a bad thing.

No one is saying they would never interact with someone wearing a hat. It's one signal among many, but it is a signal that isn't really doing anyone any favors in early 21st century America.

Real talk, still have a hat with WoW pins on it. I've enshrined it as a monument to my bad choices.

Live and learn from your past mistakes.

That reminds me of the leader of the fake Bronies on that Bob's Burger episode.

I see these guys in certain areas of Toronto all the time. Usually within a 5 minute walk of a comic shop. My daughter and I share a silent laugh when we see them, because we both know.

Last Christmas I was buying a gift card for someone at Hot Topic and I had a double-sighting: A fedora-ponytail type browsing My Little Pony merchandise, and two women loudly complaining about "cis-white men" not even 6 feet away from him.

But ya, the fedora thing is somewhat new, but the ponytail and trenchcoat combo has been around since the '90s. I worked in a video game store back then, and there was a guy from a nearby art school like that who'd show off his furry art to anyone who paid attention to him.

OP: Love your avatar.

Is this Fedora thing a US thang?, don't think I've ever seen anyone wearing one in the UK, a Bowler or Stovepipe hat maybe, but never a Fedora.

It's a US/Canada thing.

Every region has its own fashion "red flags", like the UK with Burberry hats a few years ago.

Real talk, why are the baseball cap kind of hats the only "socially acceptable"(as in "normal") hats to wear nowadays? They look so bland. I don't think I've ever seen someone look good irl wearing one of those, and if they do then chances are they'd look even better without them. I never judge anyone's worth or personality because of such a trivial detil, I just think it doesnt look very good. Some other kinds of hats I think complement some people pretty well.
I guess women have more freedom to use whatever kinds of head wear they want? It seems like as far as "socially acceptable" fashion goes they're a lot less arbitrarily limited than men in general.

But I'm saying that if you (not you you, "you" in general) let a hat decide anything about anyone, maybe not talking to you is not a bad thing.

That the world is shallow and what not, everybody knows that, but there are plenty of people that aren't shallow like that. Are they few and far between? Definitely. But if a hat keeps the shallow ones a little farther away until you meet them (the people that aren't), maybe more people should start wearing hats hehehehe. :)

I see a few chaps wearing trilbys walking across London Bridge every morning, the difference is they are usually older city gents in sharp suits rather than awkward young guys in sweat-stained tee-shirts.

I agree with the post earlier in the thread about some hats being formal- a sharp brim goes with the clean lines of a fitted suit/smart long coat, that kind of business attire looks fine when walking to work in the winter in some places. No one would bat an eyelid at a guy wearing a trilby with a raincoat/overcoat and umbrella at 7am in January around Westminster, Waterloo or the City, It just looks really silly on a teenager at a convention.

The trend for flatcaps paired with waistcoats and tee-shirts amongst media types looks even sillier to me.

Cowboy hats are sexy for both women and men, but not appropriate in all situations. Baseball caps are not bland, they are neutral, and therefore socially acceptable, but not in a business environment. Beanies are cool too. Other than that nothing else looks good to me.

I have a souvenir cowboy hat I picked up in Nashville several years ago. It's mostly just been a decoration in my apartment but I'm in the process of moving today, so you can bet I'm wearing that for the entire drive thanks to this thread, haha.

So what do you think about guys with Machetes GAF? :D

Bit lacking in the fine cutting department that a katana offers. So in my eyes, a machete wielding "gamer" is less impressive than a katana wielding one.
But to be fair, the sharpest thing about a "typical gamer" is either their dress sense or wit.

For context, I'm going off the stereotype that gamers are all Fedora wearers, pony tail wearers, completely too vocal on their video game preferences, talk to much, obserdly opinionated, etc.

This guy is all of those things. It is surreal trying to speak to him; it's like he's the embodiment of GameFAQs.

I don't want to mean, but sometimes, I just want to tell him to shut the fuck up.

Do you live in Philadelphia? I think we met the same guy.

OK hat police, acceptable or unacceptable to wear a ball cap while I work outside to keep the sun off of my bald spot?
A ball cap is totally okay — provided you don't wear it with anything non-casual and you take it off when you go indoors.

(A gentleman doesn't wear a hat indoors. Public buildings and public spaces are okay — including elevators, buses, trains, etc.)

Also, I actually have no issue with fedoras and other formal hats, provided they accompany formal wear and the setting is appropriate. But don't pair one on with a t-shirt or jeans. It looks ridiculous. You are not Indiana Jones.

I don't think I've ever seen someone wear a fedora in real life, only in pics on the internet.

i actually said that once, but 3 days ago i see someone on a mall
nothing cringey but i was suprised to find someone with one of these hats on public (too harsh edit)

EDIT: i just remember i took a pic that day. (front of his tshirt sported what i believe was an attack on titan iron-transfer decal)
aye, posting someone's picture on internet on basis of their questionable clothing taste aint good

The thing that shocks me most is that this thread isnt closed. Is it a joke thread OP? Serious question. Despite the fact that I too loathe to come into contact with certain types of hygiene-lacking folks that epitomize one of several stereotypes (not just "gamers"), I don't see how it's ok to create a thread to anonymously bully said people. Being a nurse makes me acutely aware of people's hygiene when I am in public, so I get you and others in that respect, but bullying is never ok.

You make a good point, this would be shunned in a second if it was any number of other lifestyles or cultures. Here I am assuming the guy has poor social skills and wanted to talk to op.

Yup, that's the reason fedoras, trillbys and pretty much any other hats besides your typical caps are frowned upon... people wear it with T-shirts.

That being said, I think posting a photo of a stranger was excessive.

jesus. i get the "just be yourself" thing but srly dont take it literal

I can never tell if they're wearing fedoras ironically, or unironically. Are they aware of the mockery and simply don't care, or do they genuinely think it looks good on them?

The ones I've been around for any length of time seem to have trouble with irony in general, though.

thats the reason i posted the pic of him from behind. not the other one.

but, yeah, im will remove it in a couple of minutes , just wanted to show a real life example i saw.

You americans are pretty damn weird if it wasn't for the fact that they don't suit me I'd damn well wear all the Fedoras I please, as of now I'm thinking of getting a cowboy hat.

For Christmas a few years back, my grandma gave me a fedora as a gift saying "it seems to be coming back in style :)". I wore it for her while she was here but stopped after she went home because I didn't want people judging me.

You are not in the 50s no matter how much you want to believe.

They pulled it off so much better with a full suit and a smart hat to go with it, it does not look good with baggy jeans and a game themed T shirt.

I didn't realize this was something people did. Of course it looks stupid then, but I addressed that /I/ don't do that:

Same.

I rock kangols and fedoras (only when I'm wearing a suit, though), so, again, what's wrong with fedoras? Don't make me unshit this katana on you.

Amazing.
